  • Unfortunately for those of us in the United States, cheap but fattening food is subsidized by the government and constantly sold to us through advertising. High fructose corn syrup is a cheap ingredient that goes into so many things and makes us fat without providing significant nutrition. Still, it's easy to eat…
  • I am now officially divorced from liquor, white bread and white rice. My relationship with ice cream, butter and chocolate has cooled off. I know they will try to seduce me and that I will occasionally slip and have a brief, mad fling with them. But then I'll return to my faithful broccoli, carrots, lentils, tomatoes,…
  • If this means eating a lot of organic foods and staying away from fast food and overly processed things, then I am definitely trying to do it. I would love to have others on the same journey as friends on MFP.
  • A Mediterranean diet generally involves consuming things like olive oil, yogurt, tomatoes, chickpeas, couscous, eggplants, zucchini, onions and garlic. You go easy on the red meat and instead have chicken, tuna, sardines and shellfish. Choose lentils, tabbouleh, hummus, whole wheat pita bread and other complex…
  • I would say keep doing what you are doing. I would be thrilled to lose 5 pounds in a month. For me it's more like a pound a month, and I am exercising every day and eating no more than 1400 calories a day.
  • Count me in. I'm 65 years old, 5'3" in height and weigh 155. I would love to be 135 or less! I think it's really tough to lose weight when you are both short and getting older. I work out or walk every day, keep the calories at about 1200-1400 per day and find it very hard to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds a month.
  • Twice-baked almond croissants from Bakery Nouveau in Seattle. I probably only have one about once a month, but if I'm going to have something bad it's got to worth the calorie count.
  • Please feel free to add me as a friend. I need all the motivation I can get This dieting is not for sissies!
  • I just finished "State of Wonder" by Ann Patchett, a very compelling story about a woman pharmacy researcher who follows another woman, a doctor, deep into the Amazon where a little known tribe has found a way for women to remain fertile into their 70s. Kind of a modern retelling of Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness" with…
  • You can add me as well. My food diary is open. I usually make food at home, but when I go out for lunch I try to compensate by having a protein shake for dinner. It's fairly filling and has only about 225 calories. In the summer I like to snack on fresh fruit such as cantaloupe, blueberries and nectarines. Quite filling…
  • I love The Greek Gods yogurt. I use it in place of sour cream on Mexican food, in place of mayonnaise in tartar sauce for fish and in place of whipped cream as a topping for fruit.
  • Stay away from that fried chicken! Eat something healthy ahead of time if necessary and stick with the non-breaded shrimp or the Penn Cove mussels. I'm getting hungry just reading the menu.
  • I love The Greek Gods vanilla yogurt (regular, not nonfat), but my husband and I go through it too quickly and it's fairly high in calories so we usually just get the nonfat plain. I like it in things like curried cauliflower soup or layered, parfait style, with raspberries and granola. As someone else said, the brand…
  • I love my Kindle, but now I do most of my reading on my iPhone. It's great because I can read in bed without having to turn on a light and disturb my husband. I like being able to download all my books onto my iPhone and iPad as well as my Kindle so I can read them on whatever format I want. The Kindle is really good for…
  • Count me in. CW: 156 MINIGOAL: 151 (by Aug. 31) GW: 135
  • Shangrila Hotels and Resorts. Sounds exotic, maybe I'll check it out.
  • My July goal was to lose 5 pounds. I didn't make it, but I did lose 4. So I'm going for another 5 pounds in August or actually 6. Anyway my current weight is 156 and I would like to be at 150 by the end of August. I also have a secondary goal of losing 2 inches around my waist, from 33 in. now to 31 by the end of August.
  • No, I would never give unsolicited advice on an individual's diary. But I am surprised in looking at them sometimes to see how many people go to fast food restaurants for a large proportion of their meals. I realize they are fast and cheap, but it seems to go against the whole idea of changing to a different style of…
  • For me, guesstimating just doesn't work. I use my digital scale and my measuring cups. I was really surprised to find out how small one-fourth cup of Trader Joe's chocolate-covered ginger really is. As far as whether counting calories can be fun, I think it's actually more enjoyable if you become sort of obsessive about…
  • There is an excellent and very healthy turkey meatloaf recipe on Epicurious. The link is http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Turkey-Meatloaf-107599 or you can look up Epicurious online and type in turkey meatloaf and you should find it. It uses mushrooms finely chopped in a food processor to give it more moisture…
  • I can't say that I've ever had this problem -- I wish! But I agree with your husband that you should take it as a compliment and not let it get to you. Some people are as awkward at giving compliments as others are at accepting them. When people want to know how much weight you have lost, maybe you should come up with a…
  • Born in San Antonio, now live in Southworth, WA, near Seattle.
  • Beef, pork and lamb are all considered red meat. I think that "the other white meat" commercial confused a lot of people. If you want to get away from the red meat, stick with skinless chicken breasts, turkey, fish and shellfish.
  • I make a kind of smoothie from Met-Rx protein powder. It is like a liquid vitamin pill, with calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, several B vitamins, zinc and amino acids, as well as a lot of protein. I make it in the blender, starting with frozen pie cherries and milk (on the ice crush setting), then add the powder and half a…
  • I cut out most of the junk food a long time ago. Now I work on not eating too much of the whole foods. After all, things like brown rice, whole wheat bread and avocados may not be junk but they do have quite a few calories.
  • SW July 1: 160 CW July 22: 156 GW July 31: 155 One week and 1 pound to go to lose 5 pounds this month.
  • Greek Gods Yogurt (both plain nonfat and honey flavored) Hummus Baba ganoush Ry Krisp Cauliflower Salmon Shrimp Dungeness crab Green Onions Basil Tomatoes (heirloom when I can afford them) Whole wheat bread Butter lettuce Avocados Perrier Lemons Limes Sriracha Pink Himalayan salt Wheaties Fuel cereal Nectarines (in season)…
  • Mine is open to everyone. Please feel free to check it out.
  • I make mine using chocolate flavored MetRx powder (I order it online). I put frozen pie cherries in the blender, add nonfat milk, a banana or other fruit and half a packet of protein powder. It's rich and chocolatey and quite satisfying, with about 200 to 250 calories.
