Avid hiker here. I hike most weekends out of the year, winter included. One bit of good news is that Southern Utah is a great place to go hiking, particularly the southwest portion. There should be plenty of places to go including two of your mighty five parks, Zion and Brice. The monuments in northern Arizona are another…

I'll do some walking and a low intensity workout today. We're going to the mountains for a weekend of snowshoeing so I want to conserve energy for that.

I agree, 40 miles seems like a lot. Long distance hikers average between 20 and 35 miles a day and they wake up on the trail and walk till dark or later. The speed record for the Pacific Crest Trail is held by Heather Anderson and she did 2700 miles in 60 days, 45 a day, and she had to walk 16+ hours a day to do it.

I walk almost every day, usually about 5-7 miles. Most of my vacations center around hiking too. I guess you could say walking is one of my favorite things to do.
-
I second walking. I lost a lot of weight just walking daily and eating better. You'll eventually need more to improve your fitness level but by then you'll be in much better shape to handle higher impact activities.

I have two Brittany dogs that need a lot of walking. Generally at least three miles a day with 10-15 mile hikes on the weekends. Best part of my day usually.

Medium bowl of Pho.

I've done three rounds of Insanity and one of T25 (all three stages). I really like Insanity and T25 Gamma, right now I alternate between the two each day. They really helped my endurance and appearance, but I think they lack a little on the strength training side. Next up is a hybrid Insanity\Body Beast. Hopefully that…

I lost no weight with T25 but did go from a 34 inch waist to a 32 inch waist.

Here's a few pics from some of the hikes my wife and I did last year. Quandary Peak Colorado, elevation 14,265 feet: Enjoying some wine after hiking to Lake Solitude in Grand Teton NP: Bighorn Peak in Yellowstone NP. This was a tough 13 mile hike with about 4000 feet of "up": This was taken on a 4 day backpacking trip up…

Mall walking for when the snow is too deep. When it's just cold out, walk faster.
-
I always at least walk a few miles on my rest days. Getting outside helps me relax.
-
I alternate between Insanity and the Gamma T25 workouts that use weights. Does that count? ;)

I've done it twice following the calendar and I still do the workouts as part of my routine. The soreness gets better, don't worry. I didn't lose a ton of weight, maybe 15-20 pounds through two rounds, but my overall fitness level improved dramatically. When I started, 10 pushups was tough. Now I can mostly keep up with…

Just to echo several others on this thread, I was 275 about 2.5 years ago and now I'm at about 180. Most of that I lost just by walking and eating better. Like you I was concerned with injuring myself or getting discouraged by not being able to do exercises. In the first 5 months I lost over 70 lbs and went from being…

The thing with Insanity is, if you need a break, take a break. Don't pause the video, just get back in when you can. You'll get better over time. When I first started a year ago I couldn't finish the warmup. I've done two rounds all the way through and now I do the workouts a couple times a week. I can get all the way to…

Definitely noticeable, great job. I've done two rounds in the past and now do a couple of month 2 workouts per week as part of my normal routine. Month two is obviously more tough but not as bad as you might think. You're clearly setting yourself up for success with it.

I do my workouts after work but I do go on a 3-4 mile walk every day for lunch too. I just have a small snack a few times a day at my desk for food instead of eating a lunch.

I love it when I can talk my daughter into going on a hike or walk with us. In order to accommodate her, I usually have to tone down the distance and altitude gain to where it's not much of a workout for me but it's totally worth it. This summer she actually wants to try climbing a 14er. </tears>

Two weeks ago I was 177, now after a holiday trip to my folks house, I'm 187. It happened so fast that I'm sure a good portion of it is just water retention but there's probably 3-5 lbs of real gain in there too. Time to get back to work.

Do you have a mall nearby? He could walk there. The kiosk people can be a little annoying but they usually remember you after your first lap or two. Wii Fit is pretty low impact and some of the exercises are entertaining. Stationary bikes perhaps...

That's interesting. I've always gone by the rule of thumb that walking a mile is 100 calories for the average sized male, which is me. So 3 mph = 300 calories which is what MFP puts it at when I log. If that includes the BMR though, then walking a mile is actually closer to 50 calories burned in excess of what you would…
-
What I've always done is count every exercise as walking, 3mph. It seems fairly accurate if you are actually walking and everything else you do burns more so I come in under most of the time.

Speed 3.0 is my favorite. Might be my favorite workout video period. It's on my schedule for this afternoon actually.
-
Lose the 5 lbs I gained during the Holidays and climb Long's Peak this summer.
-
Congrats on the great job of losing all that weight! I was in a similar position as you about a year ago. I had lost 70 lbs and was about 20-25 from my goal and I did it all by diet and walking. I then started more intense workouts as I lost the rest of the weight for a total of 95 lbs. Honestly, I wish I had started…

I work out at home five days a week and usually add in a day of hiking, skiing or some other outdoor activity on the weekend.
-
I've done both Insanity and T25 and I found it hard to lose weight on Insanity because the workouts make me ravenous. T25 was easier for weight loss for me. I just wasn't hungry after 25 minutes of lower impact training like I was after 50+ minutes of Insanity (in month two). Having said that, I got much better results…

I try not to eat directly before a workout because it makes me sluggish. Since I work out after work, I usually have a snack about an hour or two before I leave. After working out I usually eat some cottage cheese or yogurt and a piece of fruit, usually an apple.
-
Even on my rest days I still go for a 3-5 mile walk. Just no high impact and/or high heart rate stuff.
