  • I am actually at this point unsure of who is saying what. All I'm doing is laying down the similarity between a human and an amoeba. Maybe you are so used to living in a world with unlimited food to notice, but life on this planet is basically a struggle to collect carbon and try to hold it all together in a pile. If…
  • one might expect that, if one lacked a fundamental understanding of how the moon's gravity interacts with very large bodies of water to create tides.
  • i hit reply before i was done writing. i edited but you replied before I was done.
  • yes, because as anyone can tell you, matter and energy have nothing to do with each other. has it occured to you that if you change "utilization", the person in question will exhale more carbon dioxide? carbon goes in as part of a more complex molecule (fat, protein, or carb), carbon goes out as CO2. The energy released by…
  • while that is a good idea, doctors don't have any special magic juju, and the recommendations they make tend to be based on whatever seemed to work for their other patients. It's essentially the same info as on a forum, just with a professional moderator who takes sides.
  • my advice: forget about building muscle for now. your mission: lose weight safely while preserving muscle mass as much as possible and getting stronger. just worry about strength and weight loss. When the time comes to build muscle, you'll be able to lift much more weight than you would have been able to after following a…
  • IF ONLY my body were willing to burn fat just for the pure joy of building muscles, instead of only accessing stored energy when it is not getting enough food to keep going. But alas.
  • wow this is amazing. all this time, I figured the only way a carbon based life form can grow into a larger, more complex carbon based life form is by acquiring more carbon. you have renewed my hope for a perpetual motion machine in our lifetime
  • see, the thing is a)there is nothing in my response to indicate anger, though I am "tired" of this really bad advice to eat up all the world's protein whether you like it or not b) the thing is, FOR THE VAST MAJORITY of people trying to lose weight, 0.4 g/lb of total body mass is PLENTY. Studies on very lean ELITE ATHLETES…
  • wait, what? did you just tell him that his protein is too low? can you check your math? his recommendation for a non-athlete - 1g/lb TOTAL mass your study's results for energy restricted ATHLETES - 2.5-3.1g/kg OF FFM if I use his reccomendation, I eat 165 grams per day. Following yours, I would eat 149.5-201.5 grams, and…
  • let's not confuse leangains with recomp though (not that you did but we are close) leangains can be applied to gaining, losing, or recomp. You may not be running a daily surplus when trying to gain weight on leangains, but your weekly energy balance will still be in the black. obviously, if someone is underweight, a recomp…
  • I took that into account, believe me. I was dangerously underweight as a teen so I do know something about this. Although on the one hand, getting up to a healthy weight is the most medically important goal, it's ok to compromise a little on that to make gaining weight as rewarding as possible, which reinforces the concept…
  • In my case, I was already doing all the same moves as before, so I don't think auxiliary vs not was what did it. I am quite convinced that some of us are more susceptible to inflammation. What's crazy is that if I do only high volume work, or only strength work, no problems. It's the alternating every workout that seems to…
  • I just wanted to make sure it was offered up as an alternative :)
  • Used clothing stores are your friend right now. I went through so many clothes this year. Everything was too big. Now everything is too small! I had the coolest stuff from my trip to japan, very form fitting clothes for the summer. I tried to put on one of the polo shirts last week and the arms looked ridiculous.
  • Tababarnac une québécoise! Ajoute-moi, christ
  • It's normal. Just don't give up, and eventually your whole brain winds up accepting that your weight fluctuates and it's not a big deal.
  • Lol, yeah, and I had some weird exchanges trying to talk about it with others. I got all kinds of newbie tips for DOMS and advice to take supplements. It was just getting ridiculous though, and the final straw was when it started to affect my voice. I was such a ball of inflammation that any tiny technical error would…
  • You didn't. Both of those measurements are well within the normal range for someone who is neither losing nor gaining. Keep your eyes on the prize and if you want to know the general direction of things use the graph provided for you by MFP (look under the progress tab). If the TREND (based in the past three weeks) is…
  • Oh my. I ran into this when I did a similar split. Upper/lower, alternating heavy work with high volume work. It's brutal, and in my case, led to systemic inflammation. The DOMS did not improve, even after 3 months. My advice is to pick a goal and work on that. I went with strength.
  • I agree, assuming the subject is a machine. But human beings are highly emotional. Some more than others (like me!). I just can't stand the love handles and man boobs when I bulk. I know I'm growing slower than I could be, but that is ok with me. The trade off is feeling good all the time.
  • Lol so used to people getting it wrong, but notice he said "replace", not "convert". If I maintain my total mass, while becoming leaner, I have replaced fat mass with lean mass (weight).
  • Well I wish you wouldn't present bulking and cutting cycles as the only way. It's not. Bulking and cutting is very efficient in terms of time to reach your goal, but IMO quality of life suffers on the way. An approach like leangains allows one to put on the mass gradually, while staying much leaner.
  • Right here. Actually I ate clean at first, for the "easy" pounds, and started eating dirty later on, as I became more educated.
  • Haha I got rejected a few months ago by a girl I used to date. She was all like "I am sort of seeing someone". She had not seen me in a while and now I look taller, younger, stronger, and slimmer. Then I creeped her Facebook and saw the new man. He's old, fat, and partially bald! Basically, he's the old me but bald. , if…
  • If you are spending a lot of time contemplating your not fat friends, then deep down you are already tough on yourself. The best way to let it go and start liking yourself again is to lift heavy things to get stronger, and eat less food to become leaner. Something about the process itself is therapeutic when you do it in a…
  • yeah... see the thing is, if your metabolism is faster, you NEED to eat more to reach TDEE and maintain weight. I think it's a red herring though. We should be looking at how we present food to each other, since a food's container has a huge effect on what "feels" like a normal portion. Do you ever .94% of a banana?
  • By different, did you maybe mean irrelevant?
  • If you can squat all day you aren't squatting heavy. If you are squatting heavy there is no need for lunges. Easier on the knees too
  • could you measure the food for both of you then get back to us when you have some data to back your claim? until then, I will keep suspecting you are falling prey to the same confirmation bias as any normal human not specifically applying the scientific method to solving a given problem. it also just so happens that…
