  • Yeah maybe... also just realised they're telling me what I've eaten so far, not my goals. But my macros do seem to keep resetting themselves on their own off from what I customized them to...
  • Yes, the Smith machine.... I was wondering about that. I chose it b/c I thought it would keep me in better alignment, protect my back, but it actually does bother my lower back quite a bit. as maybe I'll try the regular squat rack - just makes me nervous? Any tips?
  • Thanks so much for this, and all the advice! I tried a PT a few yrs ago, but got injured (right shoulder - my joints are easily hurt) so I'm wary of it.... but we'll see...
  • Thanks! I'm definitely taking my time, as my joints are finicky & easily injured, so I know I have to be careful. Patience is not a virtue with me, so I'm working on it! ;)
  • Oh, I would love to find smaller plates - I hate to add 2.5lbs b/c it's one-sided that way, and I feel it when I'm lifting. But sometimes 5lbs is just too much....
  • Thanks! I know that in the past, I had to drop my calories, but was trying to eat more now b/c of the increased lifting. But apparently my metabolism hasn't changed all that much, and I still need to be lower than recommended!
  • I am 5'7", currently 178lbs & 48 yrs old. The weight I was comfortable at before I got injured was about 148, but I wasn't all that fit... mostly running on occasion, no weights. So I'm not expecting to get to that weight again, curious as to what weight I will be "comfortable" at now!
  • Just wanted to add a note to say thank you for all the advice, esp those that told me I might be eating too much - I've always believed in cutting calories (appropriately) but there has been so much written about putting your body into starvation mode if you eat even a bit too little for how active you are that I think I…
  • Thanks for the more detailed response, I appreciate it. And you're right... I DO have a metabolism ;) just a very slow, "happy to do everything at a slow rate" one. Even when I'm not fit, my BP and pulse are very low, like marathon runner low, and my temp is always low, as well... so my biggest hope in all this is that I…
  • I truly may be, when it comes to the TDEE... it's all computer generated, vs working with a PT or anyone like that... I'm hoping to find a way to get a bit closer to knowing, haven't invested in a FitBit or anything like that, but may look into it. Thanks!
  • Thanks so much - even in 6 weeks, I feel so much stronger, and I see it in my daily life - I'm a nurse, so I do a LOT of walking, stairs - and it's so much easier, lifting things is so much easier, just a lot is. So I know I'm getting stronger - and that's part of what I want. Thanks for the advice to be patient - NOT an…
  • Well then, hopefully this all will help both of us, and hopefully others - you're right, it's all a new way of looking at things! Glad to be of help, even if it's by bringing other people's advice to you!
  • Thanks! I'm honestly just learning to watch macros, so that's a new thing over the last week or two... primarily have watched carbs/proteins/calories, should be watching fat but really haven't 'til recently. I'll check that link out!
  • Thanks! *makes note to drink more water* :)
  • I'm using MFP's estimate for strength training, although I usually enter a lower # than what they give me, as a friend who also uses MFP (and is much more into conditioning than I am) said what you said, that the #'s are often high. Thanks!
  • Thanks so much for all the replies... I guess I'm a bit confused about the consistent comments to eat less, as every other forum I've been on says that if you eat at too much of a deficit, you'll go into starvation mode and lose nothing. (within reason, obviously if you starve yourself, eventually you'll lose, but...…
  • Thank you so much to all of you, I really appreciate the input. This is a new view on exercise for me, with a lot to be learned. Another question - do you take days off b/w lifting, or just change muscle groups and go back - to - back days? With my crazy work schedule, sometimes I have to go consecutive days, but other…
  • Thanks for the tips! No worries, I don't think I have any kind of "metabolic damage" - I am a nurse, and am therefore overly aware (often too much) of my body and it's intake/output & effect on my weight loss. Too many calories? I gain weight. Too few? I plateau. What I needed to figure out, and have been with WW and…
  • I thought the same thing... I often have 2 tbsp pb on a multi-grain sandwich thin as my "go to" after a workout. Definitely a crazy number of points. But - I went to see my MD b/c I was struggling so much - and as much as I've joked about having "no metabolism", it seems I really don't have much of one at all. My BP runs…
  • Thanks for all the comments! So... 6 days in, and I've lost 2.5 lbs... definitely a change in dietary habits d/t having to count points, not calories. For me, I don't think I was as careful with my calories here on MFP... I made healthy choices, but because I exercise, I would choose higher calorie, higher protein foods on…
  • I need this... I'm in! 3 days a week I'll be on the elliptical... the other 4 will be either a yoga dvd or JM 30 Day Shred. Thanks for the push!
  • That is EXACTLY what happens to me! NIce to know it's not just me! Thanks for all the responses so far... I do tend to crave junk, but stay as far away from it as possible, b/c I'm not one of those "eat a bite & walk away" kind of people... once I get a taste of the good stuff, I want MORE. So, I just avoid at all…
  • Now that makes sense to me... I did set a goal of 2lbs/week, so that might be why. And I do see my MFP daily calorie intake goals change when I add exercise calories burned... what I never see change is a difference with what MFP expects my calorie intake, etc., to be when I change up my exercise goals in the "settings"…
  • Hi! And this is where I wonder what's been going on with my MFP #'s... I set my activity level at active (workout 3+ times/week, active at my job, as I'm on my feet 12hr as a nurse) and no matter what I put in for # of workouts, calories burned, etc., my MFP calorie goals never change. Another poster here said my #'s…
  • Wow.... this is why I love this site... thanks for all the feedback!! Nice to know I'm not alone in being frustrated and/or driving myself crazy!! To the posters re: water intake.... you are exactly right... I usually drink 3-4 24oz bottles/day.... these past two days? Barely one. So I am definitely WAY low. And yes -…
  • Thank you, this was really good to read right now... I have a friend who has recently become a "life coach" for Metalife products, and although her weight loss has been great, and now some of her "clients" are seeing positive results, I can't help but wonder where they will be in a year or two. She's tried to recruit me,…
  • Very interesting topic, as I was just wondering about all this myself. I am having a VERY hard time figuring out the whole calorie thing... 1200 is MFP's set goal for me, and I can force my way to it some days, and have to keep myself under tight control to not go over on others. When I excercise, I burn 600-700 cals, and…
  • Wow!! thx for all the advice! Recently ordered the RoLforWomen book, looking forward to reading/using it... also got some very helpful tips from a female trainer at the gym today. Keep the tips coming - glad it's helping others, too!
