Do this: 1) Three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That's it. No snacks, and no "in between" meals. 2) Give up sugar. No sugar in coffee, soda, or on cereal. Give up fruit juice -- it's mainly just another form of sugar. Water is the only liquid you need. 3) In the beginning, establish a very regulated moderate…

The more you standardize your diet the less your weight will fluctuate. With a very regulated diet, you can see how your weight is trending over every two or three days. But if you have confidence that your diet is a weight losing diet, my advice is to have faith in that and not to worry about daily fluctuations. You might…

Counting calories with any accuracy requires a lot of time and effort. But Do this and you *will* lose weight: 1) Eat mostly to get the nutrition your body needs, and less for enjoyment. Establish a healthful diet and learn to enjoy healthful foods. 2) Three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That's it. No snacks,…

Three pounds a week is a lot of weight loss, but if you feel OK and don't have a lack of energy, keep going with what you're doing!!

Also, they may have been trying to be helpful in suggesting that you might be able to get help from a hospital. I'm not even going to recommend my usual diet plan for you. My suggestion is to get checked out by a doctor for any abnormalities, and then if you're OK, go to a licensed medically trained nutritionist and get a…

I tracked down the Shape magazine article. Here's the link: http://www.shape.com/weight-loss/weight-loss-strategies/10-unbelievable-diet-rules-backed-science/slide/

Interesting. But what are your sources for all these?

Food became less a part of my life, and I now have more time for other things.

I lost weight slowly over about 10 years, and during that time my weight losing diet became my natural diet. I think I also developed some anorexic tendencies. I drew the "battle line" at 125 pounds, and when I go below that, I make it a point to eat a little more.

Looking at the scale and seeing it trend downwards.

Make your cheat days count. Save them for special occasions -- like your birthday, a friend's birthday, an anniversary, Thanksgiving, etc. The day after that maybe do some fasting -- eat less or skip a meal. The best time to lose weight is right after you've gain weight. You may not be as hungry, and also -- my totally…

Very interesting. Giving up snacks is one of the key points in the weight loss advice I give. But I had no idea that eating snacks is a cultural thing, and that in some cultures -- at least in France -- snacking is very minimal. Does anyone here know of other cultures in which snacking is not customary?

Usually I say something like, "Sorry, too many calories for me. I watch my calories like a hawk."

If you can afford it, you could sign up at a weight loss boot camp. I think some of these call themselves "resorts", but in fact they are upscale boot camps. My daughter was very successful at one of these -- she lost about 4 pounds per week in the four months she attended. But it's serious work -- six hours per day of…

What keeps me motivated? The scale. When I see my weight go over 125 pounds, my mind starts screaming at me.
-
In the 10 years that I lost over 50 pounds, going from overweight to, for a few days, to underweight, no one ever mentioned my weight loss to me -- probably because it was so slow that no one ever noticed.

One way you can find out how many calories you need is by keeping an accurate count of the calories you consume. (Use of a scale will help you to do that.) Then reduce your daily calories until your weight trends downwards.

Get checked for gluten sensitivity by a doctor. A gluten free diet makes it all the more difficult to get the fiber your body needs.

Well, I reached my goal several years ago, and I currently weight about six pounds under that goal. When I reached my goal, I treated myself to a weight maintaining diet.

I was well into my diet before I thought to set a goal. Then, very arbitrarily, I decided that my goal was to lose 1/4 of my maximum weight. It took me about five more years to reach that goal. So, no, I don't think you need to set mini goals or time limits.

If you're that bored with your job, it's time to change jobs.

1. Learn to eat mainly for nutrition and not so much for pleasure -- learn to enjoy healthful foods. 2. For your birthday, do something special that does not involve eating

Every day, but don't obsess about it. Let the scale be your friend and point the way to a weight losing diet. You daily weight fluctuation can vary from a little to a lot, depending on how regulated your diet is. But if you think your weight is trending upward, it's time to take action -- increase your exercise and or…

It depends on how much you currently weigh. But, as an example, my daughter went from about 300 pounds to 200 pounds in a little less than six months. She exercised for six hours a day -- lots of cardio and HIT, and was on a very calorie restricted diet (about 1400 calories a day).

Swallow it and suck it up. Let those comments motivate you to lose weight.

Once you've reached your goal weight, work on maintaining that weight. Then after a year or two, that will be the normal you, and people won't comment about it any more. I worked very hard for about 10 years to go from overweight to a few pounds above underweight. But my weight loss was so slow that no one ever noticed my…
