  • I would guess you are not eating at a deficit. You won't know unless you log everything you eat.
  • One of the biggest myths on MFP is that a high sodium diet will slow your weight loss. Unless you are talking about the VERY short-term, this is totally untrue. Let's say that you go over your sodium target every single day (like I do). This might cause you to carry around 4-5 extra lbs. But this doesn't go up as you…

  • I wouldn't say I "enjoy" cardio; it's just been a pretty big part of my success in losing weight. Maybe I would do just as well without it, but it's hard to switch this close to the goal line. It's funny because today is Wednesday - pre-workout - and I feel great. I'm wondering if I am reacting too much to one tough week.…
  • There is kind of a rhythm to the elliptical that takes a while to get. If you keep at it, you will figure it out. But you're doing fine with the treadmill and biking, so no big deal.
  • I've also had difficulty keeping up with stronglifts while on a deficit. Here is my new plan; feel free to comment. The old plan: I've been eating at a deficit and losing 1.5-2.5lbs per week. I started stronglifts in the fall, took a break at X-Mas, then re-started after de-loads in January. I'm at the point where I am…
  • I'm in for one more challenge. Thanks for all the good work you do to keep this group going.
  • Yes, my strategy of gaining 13 lbs over two weeks so that I could lose 10 lbs in a single week was executed perfectly! :)

March 3: 253 March 10: 262 March 17: 266 March 24: 256 March 31: I finally buckled down and had a good solid week and all the water weight just came off. I'm still…
  • Net zero sounds like a victory to me. Good work.
  • I'm pretty sure 24-hour fitness does offer this at all locations. From the perspective of the trainer, s/he is trying to get you to sign up for more training sessions. Make sure that they answer any questions that you have. If you need to be shown how to use a treadmill, they should do that - even if it's not high on their…
  • I am STILL feeling it from my squats. I couldn't even do my cardio yesterday. I'm going to re-configure my workout so that I'm not pushing myself so hard on squats.
  • Thanks. That really helps me.
  • This was interesting. Thanks for the link.
  • I'm curious as to what others say on this. I started 5x5 in the fall, then restarted it (with significant reloads in January). I'm also eating at a deficit and I wonder how much longer I can continue the program. I'm stuck at bench (185) and OHP (115 before form goes out the window). But it's really the squats that are…
  • I think it's just a question of weight capacity. Check to see the maximums for what you are planning to buy.
  • What you don't want to do is set up a false choice: you can either say absolutely nothing or nag her until she succumbs. Should a mother in that situation say something? Sure. Should she bemoan the fact that she can't "say on top of her" because she lives in a different state? Uh, no. There is something in between.…
  • It's really difficult for me to get past this sentence.
  • Yes, her living in a different state must make it very difficult for you to "get on top of her" about a lot of things. Stop. She's an adult. Be a role model, not a nag.

  • First, I would give it some more time on the calorie intake goal. Three weeks isn't a lot of time. Give it at least three more and then see what happens. Regarding the strength training: you might consider a more traditional 3x / week program with rest in between.
  • If you set MFP to "lose 2 lbs / week" it will give you a calorie deficit of 1000 calories per day. So, it thinks you are probably burning less than 2200 calories per day at a sedentary level. If you aren't going to embark on an exercise program, you are probably better off going for slower weight loss (I agree with 1200…

  • Take the example of a 5'10", 200 lb man who gets 1-3 hours of light exercise per week. At age 25, he will burn 2791 calories per day. At age 35, he will burn 2698 calories per day. It's only 93 calories per day, but over the course of a year it adds up to just under 34,000 calories: the equivalent of over 9 lbs. Add to…

  • It's a new day - don't let it get you off-track!
  • That's basically the plan :) I do plan to workout on the sea days. Not sure I will be able to undo all the damage, though.
  • I'm going to be taking an absence from the group 3/1-3/8 for a cruise. Just today I booked the Carnival Miracle to Cabo and Puerto Vallarta leaving out of Long Beach as a last-minute thing. I was going to do this in January - mostly as a reward for doing well in the last challenge - but never found a good opportunity. This…
