Ah, no. I love food in quantity. I can easily eat 3x the food I'm supposed to per meal. A box of cookies and then an ice cream chaser? Sure. 3 servings of pasta? No problem. But I'm also good at controlling what I eat if I force myself too. And so I go the other direction -- I want to ensure I don't 'undo' my exercise so I…

The scoobysworkshop I linked to in the OP gives both 'cals burned by' exercise and 'cals burned during' exercise. The 'during' includes the cals your burn naturally, the 'by' doesn't. I was just wondering which I should use for MFP. Perhaps I was being overdramatic about 'starving'... but I tend to under eat when trying to…

Last year at this point I was almost at my goal weight, thin/fit and maybe a couple pounds to go. I was running, lifting, etc. Then between having a son and a serious back injury, I ended up putting back on almost 25 lbs due to sheer inactivity (plus some stress eating, I'm sure). I can do some limited strength training…

I take multivitamins but also ensure I am eating solid, well designed meals. I wouldn't recommend getting your cals through trash foods and then supplementing with a vitamin. Some argue against vitamins due to absorption rates and other things, but I can definitely 'feel' days I skip my vitamins.

Last year, same thing happened to me. I hit a plateau lasting a month or so --- long enough to research my head off about it, because based on my relatively meager food intake vs. my relatively rigorous workout, it just made no sense. And I too weigh everything, etc. So I figured out my tdee and was surprised to find I was…

1) start slower in exercise and build up. don't try to overdo it if you're out of shape, you'll either hurt yourself, burn out, or be so sore you'll find a reason not to do it. Just start by walking everyday. After you get used to spending the time in the day exercising, start increasing intensity. Once you're really…

i think it was the recent addition of sprint intervals pre-run. i removed that for the last couple days and was able to do six miles no problem. (i was basically doing 5 or so 45 second on/off sprints... for a week or two i had no problem doing these before and after the run, but the last few days, given the heat/yardwork,…

update- Finally got a new Breville, I had been forced to use a hand blender for awhile. Now I no longer pre-prepare nibs... the breville pulverizes them in the smoothie. Tomorrow i'm going to try not soaking the oats or chia seeds as well and see how it works with just the blender and no prep. i'm not sure exactly what you…

some updates: 1) i realized i was logging the wrong type of trader joe's rolled oats... most brands (even the trader joe ones i'm actually using) seem to have considerably less cals (like, by 100 cals for 1/2 cup). i generally use either bob's red mill or trader joe's, depending on which store i can get to... but yea, both…

That's in large part because "organic farming" is not the same as "being labeled organic", because as with most legislation and regulation, lobbyists got their way. Most truly organic farmers I know can't even afford certification, while larger ones that use 'approved' methods that aren't actually organic get the label.

The intro to this thread can be interpreted two ways: 1) Go to this link and read the entire blog post. OR 2) Read this entire blog post, I'm posting it here and here's the link to the original. This is the internet. People often repost articles then include a link to the source. It's easy to understand why people might…

This thread is full of fail. NO, they do not. Organic simply means: no chemical pesticides. no chemical based fertilizer. no genetically modified organisms. How in the world would adding chemical based pesticides, etc, suddenly make the food 'not' cause cancer. It's such backwards thinking it's hilarious. I see Monsanto is…

Well, until i read the post I thought you were peeing nails.... so... be happy that you're not doing that, at least.

No problem! It took me awhile to develop this recipe, and I was really concerned about a number of things (especially managing sweetness and richness w/o overpowering the flavor) but managed to quickly and easily come up with something that worked, so I figured I'd share. I got some of the ideas from this site (chia seeds…

okay, just googled 'weighted pushups' and found references to using resistance bands instead (supposedly better, because it doesn't weigh you down at the bottom when you lack leverage). and fortunately, i already have one of those. I'll add that to my pushups and reduce my reps (a total win all around, since i hate long…

oh, don't get me wrong. i understand it for bench presses, etc. that is, traditional body building type exercises. I'm having a harder time on more 'fitness' oriented resistance routines like the aforementioned pushups, pulls ups... or even something like crunches. Is doing 100 crunches not a good idea? Unfortunately, I…

i just can't see how maxing out something like pushups or pullups over 20 is 'silliness', 'madness', or 'death'. If I only did 20 pushups I wouldn't even get a burn at this point, and I am by no means a body builder. Can someone explain to me an alternate strategy?

I hate to break it to you, but if you decide to speak your 'opinion' on the net, other people can and will criticize you. that's how discussion and debate work. you don't have a 'no one can criticize my opinion' card... nobody does.

I run at 6mph for an hour mon through friday. runner's world calculator, and others, estimate that at about 680 cals in an hour for my weight. My machine says a lot more, but i don't trust that. I see no reason not to believe 680 since it seems like all calcs put it at about that.

Just tried Omega Nutrition Pumpkin Seed Protein Powder for the first time. It's not that it tastes good, but that it didn't seem to have any noticeable taste in my shake which means i could flavor it exactly how i wanted. Very happy with it. I like the taste of most protein powders, actually... though some need a blender…

not that i care, but the other guy is right. it's pretty bad usage. "incongruity" would be a far better word to use there. "equivocation" does not 'basically' mean incongruity. incongruity is more of a state of disagreement or inappropriateness, whereas "equivocation" is more of a intentional deception. More importantly,…

so it's okay to sleep with them, mess with their heads, and then dump them because they're the "slut" (not you, it can't be you)... but they don't deserve to meet your parents, the symbols of virginity. gotcha. now, if you're talking 'personality' wise -- ie, a total airhead (male or female), that's one thing. i wouldn't…

i use my soda stream and the 'flavor essence' flavors (all natural fruit flavors, 0 cals). as a reformed soda addict, i now i love this. go figure.
-
yup. grease makes me ill now. i was never too into grease, but now? it's just pure ill. i had a soda recently while on an airplane. tasted terrible, like liquid sugar. and i -love- soda (though even when i drank it i tried to stick to ones with pure cane sugar).

There are many vegan brands of protein powder. i recommend staying away from any soy based ones because you're already getting lots of soy. that leaves all sorts of options -- rice, pea, hemp, etc. i find hemp too... chalky. i just recently bought the omega pumpkin protein powder. today will be the first day i try it. it's…

you're not changing muscle that fast, nor are you gaining. it's just basic water retention, or perhaps you didn't go to the bathroom first, etc. weight can fluctuate day to day. you can not judge weight loss/gain over 2 days. you can start to see trends week to week, but you won't have a solid grasp on it until you scope…

this is what i do: go to the runners world calculator: http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/calories-burned-calculator this will give you accurate results for your specific weight/etc at a specific speed. now, if you're going a constant speed on your treadmill, that's easy. just use that speed and you're done. if you're doing…

While it's definitely okay to set these goals for yourself, the challenge is definitely not meant to be cumulative. 25 a day, never increasing, isn't a challenge for anyone doing pushups on a regular basis. these sorts of challenges always are incremental and get harder and harder... so yes, the challenge actually expects…

you do realize most studies, think tanks, and other scientific 'hooey' are bought and paid for, correct? i'm not saying none are accurate, but you can't trust them. if it affects a profitable industry or product, you can find a study saying something is great, terrible, or 'hooey' depending on who funded the research. as a…
