I was fairly thin growing up and I actually credit that to how my parents taught us to eat. The biggest things were: - We always had to sit down at the table to eat. It didn't matter if it was a meal or snack, we had to put everything away and sit down at the table until we were finished. It was definitely harder to…

Sorry, I assumed the OP was using the US cup which is about 240 mL (technically 236.6 mL).

It's kind of tricky to convert ounces to milliliters, as ounces are a unit of weight and mL are a unit of volume. The ounces measurement on soups in the US is usually the net weight of the soup not the volume (you'll notice that it can vary from soup to soup even if the can is the same size). Most people (including Google)…

The amount of calories burned depends on the effort exerted. Both MFP and the machine are estimates, however, the machine is more likely to have an accurate estimate of the effort you exerted. For example, MFP only has one input for the elliptical, but the amount of calories you burn on the elliptical can vary drastically…

This! When I wanted to start lifting, I tried to get my boyfriend to come with me to help and teach me. I would make plans to meet him at the gym during lunch, and just before lunch he would postpone it until after work because he and his colleagues were all going out for lunch. Then, after work came and he would cancel…

I have been thin most of my life (I guess some might also say I was thin when I started getting back in shape, I just had a high body fat percentage), and this is what I do, but not on purpose. I don't know if it's a "secret" so much, since I don't really do it consciously, but I definitely attribute the leaner physique I…

I love squash soups, they warm me up and keep me full for a while. Plus they are usually relatively simple. However, I also love "sausage" stuffed acorn squash (I actually used ground beef not sausage), which might be something your husband could get into. You basically cut the top off an acorn squash, hollow out the…

I guess it really depends on how large and/or "saggy" they are, but I do bench press, reverse shoulder fly, and bent over barbell row exercises for my chest and posture. I have found (and others have noticed) that they have made a significant difference in my posture and chest "perkiness." However, I only lost about 20 lbs…

I just want to note that when I said the simple answer was yes, I just meant that most commercially labeled pumpkin things are actually made with butternut squash or a similar variety. Otherwise, I would tend to agree, traditional pumpkins (the orange ones) do not taste as good as butternut squash.
-
The simple answer is yes. But, are you speaking in terms of cooking? Butternut Squash is a variety of the squash species Cucurbita Moschata. Most of the squash types in this species taste similar and these are the types of squash actually used in canned pumpkin and a lot of commercially made pumpkin things (Libby's uses a…

This. Generally, (in continental Europe at least) fresh, healthy foods are cheaper than junk food or eating out. Just try to eat healthier choices and eat everything in moderation. This is the only advice I really disagree with. Eat because you want to and/or because you are hungry, not because you feel like you have to.…

This, and above all else, do what you enjoy doing. I enjoy cycling. I love going for a 60 km ride through the mountains. It's something I enjoy and would rather spend my time doing, so I find the time to do it. If you don't enjoy what you are doing you won't make the time to do it. You'll make excuses as to why you can't…

I don't think you will look to skinny or sickly at that weight, but it really depends on your body composition. You will look slimmer if you have a low body fat percentage and higher lean body mass. When I was about 130 lbs (I am 5'9") most people said I looked healthy, and I thought I looked fine myself (although I could…

This! I just baked some pumpkin cream cheese muffins the other day that were delicious and only 130 calories a piece (I got the recipe from a website called Hungry Girl, I think). You can find low calorie versions for almost everything or you can try your favorite recipes with lower calorie substitutions for certain…

There are two reasons that I can think of: You started out at a higher weight and/or you haven't been doing enough strength training. If you started out at a higher weight/size you may need to lose more before you go down a size. I was a lower weight and only had to lose about 10 lbs to go down a size, but I had many…

Since yours is only a watch and the machine count is lower, I would go with the machine count. HRMs are more fallible than people would like to believe. They are based on your heart rate which does not always accurately represent physical exertion. If you are really out of shape, then your heart rate, and therefore the…

I had something similar but in the middle of the top of my foot. I have really high arches, so even though I was running properly, it turned out I had some small stress fractures. I would go to a doctor and get it checked out. I ended up needing to rest and have custom arch supports fit and made with a podiatrist.

I also plan my meals and log them the day before or in the morning because it lets me know how many calories I will have leftover for snacks. When I didn't plan meals I would sometimes find myself with no calories left at dinner time or a ton of calorie left at bedtime (and I hate eating a lot before I go to bed because I…

I can't say for myself but my uncle had it done and the transformation was incredible. It mostly seems to help you make better food choices and suppress cravings for high-calorie foods. My uncle rarely ate his greens and other colorful vegetables before and now they make up the majority of what he eats. He's lost quite a…

I started at the exact same height/weight as you (I'm still the same height). I lost the weight/BF% that I wanted to with a net of 1200-1300 per day (about a 1-lb/.5-kg per week loss). If you net 1200 calories (i.e. food intake - exercise = 1200 calories) you should be fine (assuming that is what you want to do). There are…

I also found the losses motivating, but most of the people I have observed have done one of a few things: 1. They start out with too much too fast: either too large a calorie cut or exercise. Everyone is different in terms of their fitness level and willpower so some have to start out slower than others. Some can make a…

I, myself, prefer jeans with a little flare. I feel like they balance out my legs more than slimmer cut jeans. Boot cut are okay, but I still feel like the accentuate my big thighs and hips more than I'd like.

I think it really depends on your starting weight and how you lose weight. I only had about 15-20 lbs that I wanted lose and I lost about 2 dress sizes (I was in between sizes before so it was more like 1.5 sizes). I lost the way I gained, i.e. mostly in my hips and bum and a bit on top. However, I know some people who had…

Are you willing to pay to go to Yoga classes? That would be the best idea. I have had serious knee injuries in both my knees and I used to go to a small yoga studio where the instructor would ask us before each lesson what we wanted to focus on or if we were having and pain or other problems. She would choose exercises for…

I have run into quite a few things that do not, however perhaps that has changed. My point was that one shouldn't take so much stock in the calorie counts of prepackaged foods. If you have such a small deficit that you need to worry about an extra 40 calories or so, you should probably try to eat things that you have much…
-
First, in the US, many things do not give a gram serving size. Second, it's pointless to try to calculate calorie count by weight on prepackaged foods. What they give for the serving size and calorie count is an average of a sample of the prepackaged meals. Some may be lighter, some may be heavier and even two prepackaged…

Yes, It's possible. I went from 0 to 20 in about two months. I would do 3 - 4 sets of 20 push-ups starting with as many full push-ups as I could do and then drop to modified push-ups for the rest of the set. I found I could slowly do more and more full push-ups before I had to drop to modified push-ups.

I did the same today because I didn't believe the calorie count MFP gives for yardwork/gardening as it is so high, but I guess it was correct. Although it's tough, I guess I never really thought of it as real exercise.
-
Yes, this is true. What people really mean when they say it is unsustainable they usually mean the person will not be successful because a) it is hard to maintain such a low calorie diet for such a long time, and so they may binge and/or b) the person will gain the weight back once they are finished losing the weight by…

That sounds low, but it's difficult to say since we don't truly know the resistance you used or the effort you put in. Effort is hard to judge based on what someone tells you. My friend's intense effort is my moderate effort and my moderate effort is my sister's light effort. Like everyone else suggested, I would get a…
