I have a Fenix 5. Overall it works well. There was a crash bug that got me once or twice when saving workouts, but that has been fixed. Most single activities show up fine. There are a few peculiarities on a few exercises. For example, when I create a custom exercise, such a triathlon swim/run brick, the import into MFP…

If you're on a budget you may want to try to look locally for people selling their old free weights. The cost is prohibitive to ship, but usually you can find local used weights on craigslist that are cheap. That may also give you some flexibility to titrate the amount of load you're working with as your fitness increases.

Re: Women getting bulky from lifting heavy weights. I have seen a few world champion and world record level strength competitors who started getting beefy in their traps and deltoids (natural aka non-steroid users). If you cannot deadlift and squat more than 3x your bodyweight and bench press more than 2x your body weight,…

The rule of thumb I was able to glean from my triathlon coach is that you gain about 5 seconds on your mile time, on average, for every 1 pound of body weight you lose. The excess weight is causing your body to use a lot of its resources just to fight gravity. Your heart is doing a lot of work to move your body, but don't…

I'd be inclined to use the scientific method: See how hot it burns.

55 years old. Started MFP several years ago at about 300 lbs and am now down to 225 @22% body fat. I’ve got a ways to go but I’ve got this... just basic logging and CICO. Every time I stop logging I gain weight. It seems that the act of holding myself accountable has been what I needed. Another 25 or 30 lbs will definitely…

I plan to eat one during my triathlon tomorrow. It's kinda race day nutrition for me. It's not how I eat normally.

I think I average about 15k steps a day. If my Garmin is right, that basically equals the calories I burn from triathlon training. So, yeah, it matters. It also winds up being a great way to spend time with my wife and puppies.

Yes, this exactly. Can I slip an expert boxer's 2-3 combo? Can I tap out a purple belt? Can I set a PR on a triathlon? Those things I find to be fun and motivating challenges. But do I get motivation from standing in front of the mirror watching the old guy looking back at me? No.

Kaiser Permanente maintains a database of nutritional supplements that has some interesting data. On Raspberry ketones it said the following: The 'scientific' study by the company promoting the product was done by a person whose academic credentials were an MBA--no scientific standing. The study cited was performed on…

We live in a community where bike lanes were designed in on all roads from the start. I bought my wife a nice carbon fiber road bike, but she doesn't ride it. I guess she had a couple of bad accidents as a little girl where she went over the handle bars and hit her head. She has difficulty relaxing when riding now. I tried…

I've seen the same symptoms recently. Appears to be a bug on the MFP side that their tech support hasn't yet fixed. Here's a workaround: Go into MFP > Exercises and edit your exercise coming from Garmin and without doing anything, hit SAVE. Then it will show up in your feed.

Do you have more than one ANT device connected?

54 here. Started MFP at about 300 lbs several years ago but am down to 225 now with a goal of 200, so I'm making progress. Having fun as a beginner triathlete (who needs to work on his running).

Same symptoms here. It seems to correlate with the software update they did last week.

Have you considered using a resistance band? I have a curcuit training routine I do at home with my wife where one of the stations is to hold under tension in an isometric or very slow negative pullup for 1 minute. I find that even if I don't need the band for the first circuit I'll definitely need it after the third. It…

Hi Darla, I am the same age and have had a similar problem but am a guy 6'0" twice your weight, so I really don't know if my experience sheds any light or not. But I can certainly identify with the struggle. I started logging my food back in the '90s with just pen and paper. I started logging my food, cut my calorie intake…

I swim 3-4 hours a week and love it. My hard days are with my triathlon team. The other days I do mostly recovery cardio. Couldn't handle the running without it.

Dunno about the OP's question of how to best lower your heart rate. I haven't seen any data or systematic study. Anecdotally, I saw my RHR immediately go down when I changed my focus from powerlifting to triathlons. When I measure my heart rate with my Garmin Heart Rate Monitor I can report my own RHR is 42 at age 54 when…

Swam an hour today but didn't count laps. Medium intensity mostly freestyle interspersed with drills my triathlon coach gave me. It really helped me rehab an angry sciatic nerve I managed to pick up last week in Muay Thai.

54 here. Started out at 300 lbs, lost 85 and gained back 45 from stress when a child had a major life-threatening illness. It's hard to see your child suffer. I'm back on the program again and have lost 25 lbs since July. I hope to lose another 30 and hit my target weight before Christmas. I hope you find a way to meet…

Not wedding, but 20th wedding anniversary. Set a goal on July 4th to lose 20 lbs with a stretch goal if 25 lbs by 9/13. With three days to go I have 0.2 lbs to lose to hit the stretch goal if 25. I still will need to lose another 30, so the journey is far from over, but setting a proximal goal tied to the anniversary sure…

I have a trampoline. If I use it with a heart rate monitor I can easily get in my 70-80% aerobic zone. If I modify the height or the motion I can get anaerobic no problem. One of the main advantages is that it is fun, so you don't even notice you're exercising. The trampoline takes you from 0 g's at the top of the jump to…

BMI of 32.3 @23% body fat. If my calculations are correct I will have a BMI of 28 at 10% body fat. Does that bother me? Not exactly. One thing it means is that I'm not going to win a bicycle hill climbing stage race against a 120 lb rider. It also means that I can clean and jerk that 120 lb rider about 60 times. /shrug

Here's an old picture I dug up of me holding Thai pads in 1979 for my first teacher in the martial arts. I was 16. I am grateful to all the teachers I have had in Muay Thai, but perhaps my deepest gratitude goes to the man who started me on the path. /wai

Hi, I'm Terry. I'm 54 and have been in martial arts since I was 16. I started in Muay Thai in '79. I trained in Thailand and have taught off and on since about '86. I have had a bunch of smoker fights. I sustained a bicycle racing injury that shattered my right elbow, so I have a limited extension in that arm, and that…

My wife and I do training together in our garage, including kettlebells. We have most of the weights under 53 lbs doubled and singles up to 80 lbs. However, the kettlebell I fear the most is the little 5 lb guy because my wife has me hook it on my foot and do burnout ab rounds. I consider kettlebell training to be a very…

Yes, yes. As a man I lack agency. It is an argument common to all identity politics: ‘You must understand where I’m coming from, BUT you can NEVER understand where I’m coming from. Therefore shut up.’ It is a way of looking at things that is inherently divisive. But tell me, have you ever placed your life in danger to help…
