  • Doesn't that make a sound?! First time I heard a road inner tube burst I thought someone had fired a gun! DH had one burst in his car while he was driving...I woulda shat my pants!
  • I have a very lordotic spine. If I sit too much and don't keep my core strong I have run into lower back pain, as well as issues "down there" on my bike saddle, since my pelvis rotates back and puts more pressure forward of where it should be--on my privates, instead of on my sit bones.

  • Right...because cyclists and swimmers are not at all injury prone. My worst running injury (grade 2 sprain during a trail relay, that I continued to run on...literally "taking one for the team") paled in comparison to my worst cycling injury (grade 2-3 sprain + 2 broken bones and 5+ weeks in a long arm cast, now facing…
  • The Human body is a use-it-or-lose-it entity. I'd be FAR more worried about osteoporosis than I would any sort of "overuse" injury, which isn't even all that likely if a runner trains wisely. I haven't really run into much of the way of injuries specific to day-in/day-out running. My injuries have been more of the acute…
  • He is totally right...joints are damaged by being overweight FAR more than they are from doing what they are supposed to do--move. My knees were forever achey when I was 60#s overweight. Now they never bother me from running.
  • You need a calorie deficit, plain and simple. Personally, I lost weight WAY easier during the years when I was mostly inactive. It's SO much easier to carry a calorie deficit when you have no risk of bonking 5 miles from home. That's one long-*kitten* walk when you are out of fuel.
  • BINGO! I broke my wrist in 2 places while mountain biking in late Nov. My orthopod said NO exercise of ANY sort for the 5.5 weeks that I was in a splint or long arm cast. I followed doctor's orders and attacked my diet HARD...and dropped >10#s during those weeks that I was benched. Here's the thing...a lot of us find that…
  • I think any steady-state aerobic exercise can do this. I definitely get it on the bike, too. By about 10 miles into the ride I feel strong and for hours afterwards.
  • 3.5 servings of alcohol over as many hours is not going to cause alcohol poisoning in any 145# 39 year old woman (low-carb or no low-carb. I'm no noob to ketosis or reasonable intake of adult beverages, either). I'm still sick and it's looking more and more like I'm having a reaction to stopping taking Tramadol/Ultram…
  • Ugh, I am still battling intermittent nausea/wooziness. On the bright side, I don't think it was *just* the wine that left me feeling so awful 48 hours ago. I'm starting to think it's the Tramadol/Ultram my orthoped. prescribed for wrist pain, recently (I fractured my wrist back in late Nov. and have had a good deal more…
  • Bicycling. Especially my mountain bike. It's like a built-in interval workout...works my whole body more than running or riding my road bike.
  • Nope. Had a tubal with cauderization and thermal ablation about a decade ago. The baby factory was condemned, burned-out, and the doors were soldered shut! :drinker: I'm thinking I maybe had a bug...or the longest hangover in history! By about 2pm I started feeling a lot better.
  • Exactly. Oil at the top means it DOESN'T have hydrogenated oils in it, which remain solid at room temp. Having to stir it means it's the real deal. Oh, noes...I have to stir my food...too much work!!! Stir it, stick it in the fridge, and the fridge will keep the oil incorporated and keep it from going rancid, since…
  • Smucker's natural...like crack in a jar!!!
  • Way awesome! I really need to follow his races, more.
  • The Yoplait is an abomination. It's regular yogurt thickened with cornstarch and crap. It's not even Greek yogurt. Most of the "greek" yogurts made by the big yogurt manufacturers are just thickened yogurt without the benefit of higher protein of true Greek yogurt. The real stuff is generally a lot more $$, because it's so…
  • I know I'm doing something right when they're at least light pink, but it's really interested to see how long it takes me to go from a day of eating crap back into ketosis when I cut out the junk and go back to 20-30 net carbs. Seems to be about 36-48 hours.
  • A Garmin Forerunner would be a good option, too. I run with a Forerunner 305 and have an Edge 500 on my bike--I used to use the Forerunner on the bike, as well. If you're out for more than a couple of hours it will really save on battery life of your phone and has better accuracy, too.
  • OK, but just so you know, that's not low-carb by any standard definition, aside from the PB. Honey and rice are both pure carb sources. I vote for crustless quiche. I make one that has a base of eggs, heavy cream, cheese...and then I will add various things to it depending upon what I have on hand: broccoli, cooked…
  • When is he going to join this group so I can pick his brain?! I had read before that one can show ketosis simply from reduced calorie intake, too. So that's not all bad. The dark color could show that I am for sure eating a deficit. The beauty is I don't FEEL like I'm eating a deficit. Running on an intake of…
  • Oh, do some "brick" workouts...now THAT high or the high after completing a duathlon....amazing!
  • I broke my right wrist 6 weeks ago and was unable to do ANY activity until last Friday, when I got my hard cast off. OMG, you don't know runner's high until you are unable to run for so many weeks, then are suddenly able to go for it! Saturday I did an EASY 3-miler that left me with DOMS for a couple of days, but the…
  • Another great 5k. Still slow, but I don't attribute that to diet--just the effect of almost 6 weeks of inactivity + wind + not wanting to push myself with gimpy wrist still in splint. It's really interesting to compare this to a year or so ago when I did lowER carb, but not ketogenic. Humans really need to be all or…
  • Yay! That is really impressive. I'm really eager to see what the coming weeks will teach me.
  • Hardly. Kids don't have the ego that lands adults with overuse injuries. When they are uncomfortable they walk. Sometimes they walk because they don't "feel like" running. I've coached Girls On The Run and my own kid. It's RARE to find a child who will run beyond their abilities unless they have a parent who is REALLY…
  • 5k is perfectly acceptable distance for kids that age. I FINALLY talked my 11 year old into training for his first 5k this Fall. 12 days later there was a turkey trot that he wanted to do. He's already eager to train for more races this Spring and Summer. I think a km/year of age is just fine until they are closer to…
  • What's your budget? What about a road bike + indoor trainer? Then you have the option to ride outdoors, too.
  • Yeah...I've never seen anything > 10-20% / 50-100grm carbs/day described as low-carb.
  • So do Asics, Nike, NB, Brooks, Adidas, etc. Every major mfgr has a model to fit pretty much every biomechanical need. Don't equate a particular brand as fitting a particular pronation need. About the only thing that can be said across any brand is that they might tend to fit a certain way--but even that can change. For…
  • Why Asics? There are lots of great running shoes out there...New Balance, Nike, Saucony, Mizuno, Brooks, etc. Go to a running store and have them match you to the right shoe for you, not just a brand.
