I usually see snakes....one day, i almost stepped on one and did my "snake dance". A guy going by on a bike said it's just a snake -- then he saw how big it was. He said he would have danced too.

Champion brand Capris from Target have been a good buy for me. Nice thick material and provide good tummy support. They also have some nice running shorts with the built in lycra shorts for when you are ready to show your legs.

You might look at a program like Couch to 5K that will ease you into a running program slowly. You may find that helps you adapt your breathing as you go. Good luck!

Congrats! That is a NSV to celebrate. My college age daughter went through a similar thing with me. She started running to do a Mother's Day 10k with me and has stuck with it. Now she is going to the gym regularly. And we are planning on running several 5ks and the Mother's Day run with me again. To keep her motivated, I…

Border Collie named Elvira --- we think she is about 3 1/2. She is my running buddy. Also have a tuxedo cat named Nigel....he is a bit of a jerk.

It's great your daughter is supporting you! My daughter ran her first 10K with me last year at a Mother's Day run. She has already asked about us doing it again this year. I think we have a new family tradition.

I use MFP as my main hub and link my fitbit and runkeeper apps to it. It seems to work very efficiently for me.

Powerful words and a great inspiration for all of us. I work for the American Heart Association and am thrilled that you want to get involved with the organization as you continue your journey! Folks like you are what inspires us to the do the best we can at work every day.

One of my fave times to run is when a light snow is falling! Warm running gear that is breathable and wool running socks are a must for me. I try to stay on the cleared running paths as well (luckily here they plow the bike path areas before the street it seems). I do wear gaiters to help with the dampness as well. I have…

Not in the heel but I did a series of shots in the top of the foot and the pad of my foot to deal with pain while running. They were some of the most painful shots I have ever had (even worse than getting a tattoo on my foot). They would help for a couple of weeks and then back to constant pain. I finally went to an…

I am the same way --- don't understand the machines, I've bought DVDs but don't do them. I recently joined KoKo FitClub -- it is a new style gym that takes all the thinking out of what to do for me. They have an all in one machine that has a video screen that tells you exactly what to do -- form, what weight, etc. I went…

That has been my struggle as well. About two weeks ago, I said enough is enough and started focusing again. I do really well during the week but fall apart on the weekends (or when I am traveling for work). So the last two weekends, my focus has been on making better choices/portion control and trying to anticipate how to…

Great job!! I also felt awkward and thought people would make fun of me when I ran because I was overweight. But I did it anyway --- and I made a point to smile and wave at other runners to make me feel like I was part of that group. No one has ever yelled at me but I would have waved and smiled at them -- hopefully they…

I have worked from home for about 6 years now and am in front of the computer most of the time. I just joined MFP a couple of months ago and have been consciously focusing on my health -- it is a very slow journey for me but I am focusing on lifestyle change and not rapid weight loss. It takes discipline for me because I…

First -- remember you didn't gain all the weight overnight and you are not going to lose it. This is a lifestyle change not a diet. I agree that you need to eat to goal --- not eating enough can make you tired and start to undermine your will power. I have my activity level set to sedentary because i am at a desk all day…

Also check with your vet on when it is OK to run with your puppy. With our border collie, they recommended not running with her until she was a year old to allow her body to grow properly and be ready to handle the exercise. Then I built up her miles as we started just like I do for myself. I did walk her and hike with her…

I run with my border collie Elvira. My hubs trained her and she is a great running partner -- she runs right next to me. Best thing she does is follow a command called "switch", if she is running on my left side (her preference) and a runner or bike is coming toward us (which means they will pass on my left side where she…

I buy the right shoes and also wear orthotics due to some foot issues -- my recommendation is to go to a reputable running store and get fitted for the right shoes first. They can watch you run and look at your gait etc and make recommendations. If they feel you would benefit from an orthotic -- get that before you buy the…

Whatever you get - make sure you go to a reputable bike shop and make sure it is the right size. They can set it up so that you don't have any knee issues and can help you find a seat that works for you. Bad fitting bike = lots of pain!!!

I am spoiled with a home gym -- treadmill, elliptical and weights. I am about to start using the 10 Minute Trainer DVDs from BeachBody to incorporate strength training. They are good because depending on how much time I have, I can do 1, 2, 3 or whatever. And I run outside as much as I can!

I am doing the same thing. One of my biggest challenges is that we have alot of guests or are out doing things on the weekends -- that makes it really hard for me to stay on track. My goal on weekends is to get exercise, watch portions (this is a big one for me) and make better choices about what I eat. I don't drink…

I am fairly new to getting back to a healthy weight and have learned from past failures that I need a bit of flexibility - especially on weekends. My goal is to stay under my calorie goal during the week and be a little more flexible on the weekends. Also if I am planning a night out, I try to incorporate some extra…
