Sow but steady...

Bump for the good advice here. I have been wanting to get a bike for a while but did not want to spend a lot of money if I ended up not liking it.

Good advice here. Just start something easy and then build from there!

I would say it is definitely a "Memphis thing" . Whenever I run in my parent's neighborhood, it never fails that there is at least one car that will come back around during my run. I strike it up to folks being nosy since there are not a lot of runners in the neighborhood. On MLK day, I had a person drive by 3 times before…

Most gyms allow guests to use their facilities for a 5 or 10 dollar visit. On the days where its too cold, that may be a more affordable option then signing up for a gym membership. You may only have to do that a handful of times in the winter.

I have this issue which limits me to running in my neighborhood in order to be near the house. I would love to run in parks and other places but when nature calls, I have to go immediately!

Awesome post! My plan is to start some weight training in 2014 and this is a great plan. Thanks!

Great info here! Will be saving this post for future reading.

Okay I am in For this month. Did 3 miles this afternoon!

I don't know if mine changes from morning to evening, but I always had an elevated HR according to those generic formulas. My resting HR is 100 which is the high end of normal ( 60-100). So when I am running at a conversational pace I can be at 90-95% of my max HR. I started just using listening to my body and its rate of…

This is a really good thread. I love the advice to focus on the enjoyment of running and building up your mileage slowly vs. risking a burnout by aggressively pushing yourself for the sake of a particular time. This is a great group here. Runners rock!

4 miles. Yay!

I do want the long term change vs. short-tem. One poster mentioned a building up to a base of 20 miles a week. I did not think of it in terms of total mileage per week before increasing. Thanks!

Oh, okay.I have a copy of Jeff Galloway and Hal Higdon's 10k programs. I will look them over and see what works best. Higdon's program seems a little aggressive vs. Galloway.

I have a HRM but have not been using it. I guess it would be helpful in pushing myself harder throughout the run. I have really only been pushing hard at the end of my run to train myself to give that last blast of energy to push past others (in my mind, LOL!)I run solo, but have been reading that running with others will…

Wow, that is awesome! This is what I am wanting to do. I see that my mileage is low. I am doing 10-12 miles a week currently. Are your 3 short easy runs about 3 miles or are you defining easy as a slow place for a certain period of time?
-
Thanks. I was just worried if it was realistic to think that I could get to a 30 minute 5k time by January 1st if I am currently at 34:14.

Thanks for the thread! I was trying to decide which would be better: Fartleks or tempo training
-
On my other 2 run days I plan to increase to 6 miles, but just at a slow steady pace not focusing on time. I figured if I can get my 5k to 30 minutes or less, that would be a good base to start training for a decent 10k time and I am thinking of a half marathon next October.

Hello everyone, I started exercising this summer to lose weight and participated in my city's walk to run program for women. From that experience I have developed a passion to run. I never ever thought that would happen without packs of rabid dogs behind me! Anyway, now I have goals to become a distance runner. I hope to…
