  • This is amazing! My mom has MS so I definitely know the struggles you are facing every day. So proud of you for doing this . . . and love your NB shoes . . . I have very similar ones, at least they look the same :)
  • Personally it's a comfort level thing for me. I mean I'm not a man, but I work out in a tank top and compression pants because that's how I feel comfy. If a man feels comfy without a shirt, or a woman prefers to run in a sports bra then more power to them. It doesn't bother me, it's just not for me.
  • Biggest bang for your buck long term, or short? Cardio gives you, generally, a bigger caloric deficit that day but in the long run strength training can be more beneficial depending on your goals. So I wouldn't exactly say that this is true. Again, really depends on your goals and what you're looking to get out of it.
  • I can ask my RD for her links, as for my own research it was just information I read as I was surfing around. I can try to find them for you if you'd like. But as I said, if you can control you intake and you have a good relationship with your hunger signals then maybe you haven't experienced this.
  • There is some room for debate, but I read a study (and heard the same thing from my RD) that while diet drinks do not actually make you gain weight there is a physical effect drinking them has on your body . . . well actually, any item with artificial sweeteners will do the same thing. So artificial sweeteners (AS) trigger…
  • Run Monday/Wednesday/Saturday/Sunday Cross Train Tuesday/Thursday Usually Tuesday is cross training with weights/resistance of some kind and Thursday is a cardio cross train so either rowing or a spin class. My focus this time of year is, obviously, on running ha ha
  • Well the reality is that you can actually lose weight without working out. Working out should mainly be for health reasons, and as a bonus it gives you extra calories to play around with. As to what you should focus on . . . . that's really up to you. Cardio will give you more calories to play around with during the day…
  • Personally I put it into my calendar and here's a couple reasons why 1) I'm a single woman who is also a fur momma so all my little one has is me, and I need to make sure I'm meeting her needs and mine. So by scheduling time in I make sure I can fit everything she needs with everything I need. 2) if it's in the calendar…
  • One of the best things (in my opinion) about spin classes is that they're legitimately made for all levels of fitness. When the instructor says to turn up the resistance, you might do one crank and Joe beside you does three, but in reality both of you are turning up the resistance. You can go at your pace because when…
  • When you first start out losing weight, especially if you are significantly over weight then you will probably see a drop fairly quickly. This is just things like water weight, sudden change in diet and your body shocked into a new routine. What's more is that you say 'out of desperation' you joined a gym . . . well,…
  • This doesn't really happen, either. When people say 'toning' what they're actually referring to is a loss of body fat. See your muscle is the shape it is . . . that doesn't change. But when you lose the fat around the muscle its shape becomes much more apparent. It is commonly referred to a 'toning' but really because you…
  • Not sure if you want something "fancy" or regular coffee but I always get a blonde roast when I'm there and I love it. I personally take cream and sugar in my coffee but I'm sure you could also drink it black for zero calories. I love Starbucks blonde roast.
  • K but no. Women have a really, really hard time putting on muscle even when we're trying. We just don't have the hormone make up to support it. Further, eating at a deficit and putting on muscle do not, generally, go hand in hand. To gain muscle you actually have to eat at a surplus, or at the very least maintenance.…
  • So I went as far back as mid-April in your diary . . . and here's the thing You have more than one occurrence of logging a Kraft-type salad dressing (most common: Cucumber Ranch) Again there is nothing wrong with this, but be honest. There is also a couple entries for a caesar salad . . .but no dressing. Did you eat a…
  • This is one of the biggest misconceptions about eating out. So generally "salads" are considered to be a healthier option but if you're eating salad from a fast food restaurant then you might as well just eat the burger in most cases unless you're eating salad without any kind of dressing. The salad itself isn't horrible -…
  • Also . . .no. IBS may have been irritated by carbonated drinks but how do you just get rid of IBS? Is this not something you will have forever, but you need to manage? I have IBS and it's very well managed by not consuming specific foods - for me it's dairy products and highly processed foods with high fat, although when…
  • This is not a for sure statement, and the two do not always go together. You can way over eat on things in a vegetarian approved diet . . .
  • This kind of is calorie counting though if you're controlling the kinds and amounts of food you're consuming. Whether outright or not, by eating smaller portions you're controlling calories. By eating more nutritionally sound foods, you're generally, controlling calories because nutritionally sound choices usually are more…
  • This! And also for my $0.02 worth . . . I was 350+lbs. I was huge. I didn't hate myself then but I was disappointed that I had lost control like that. I've lost and kept off 90lbs over two and a half years and have a lot more to go. I have very, very little loose skin with the only "noticeable" areas being a little right…
  • Thanks :) It's always such a great feeling when I've finished but then see the photos and I'm like wait, no . . . I felt way better than that lol.
  • I know! One of my friends when she saw it said the girl is looking at me like "uh, where did you come from? Why are you passing me? . . . stay in your lane" ha ha
  • Just wanted to share my most recent finish line photo. I am not photogenic when running . . . and probably never will be. But They caught me with both feet off the ground booking it through the chute, so I'm pretty happy with that. PS - I wasn't actually in that much pain, even though I really looked like I was hurting.
  • Also - toning up/muscle gains go directly against losing weight. To do the former you have to eat at a surplus, to do the latter you have to eat at a deficit. Also, you're a woman .. . so for muscle that's kind of working against you (and all of us, really). Either way, you're probably not getting the nutrition you need…
  • So my goal for April was 45 running KM . . . and sadly, I did not make that goal. However now that spring weather has decided to visit South Western Ontario I believe I should kick it up a notch and aim for 50 running KMs Here's hoping :)

  • Oh man . . . so this! A couple weeks ago on a rest day, so I knew I wasn't going to be working out, a friend of mine wanted to go get Five Guys Burgers. Which I wanted to because they're one of my favourites. So we went . . . I got a little burger (with only one patty) and we split fries. Although my friend got a regular…
  • So it's been repeated but the reality is that either you're incredibly special and your body doesn't work like 99.9% of the world's does . . . . or you're not being honest with yourself. Honesty about what you're eating is probably the single hardest, and single most important, thing you can do in this journey. If you…

  • Similar to this, for me, is not being in routine. Every Sunday I meal prep and do laundry . . . and then go to my parents house for dinner . . . that's just what I do on Sundays. At the beginning of February I bought and moved into my first house and my routine was so off I struggled to function. Something as small as…
  • Thanks! I know there's a ton of people who always say to me after a race, "You finished, and that's what matters" but I think anyone who has run even a little bit knows that once you get a bit of it in you you just want more and more, you want better and you want to push yourself. So my mileage isn't as high, but I know I…
