I usually workout even if I'm in pain. Except for the back! You should stretch a lot, it will relieve the pain, working out abs should be ok but avoid putting stress on your back until it feels better. I hope it helps :)

The best way to keep muscles is to use the bodybuilders diet : Ketosis. Not to be mistaken with the Diabetic ketoacidosis, it's actually VERY healthy. By lowering your carbs, your body's main source of energy will be fat and muscles and fat will no longer compete to provide energy.

It all depends on your metabolism. The best way to do is to weight yourself and see if you lost more or less than 2 pounds in a week. Adjust your calories by 10% up or down.
