Vegetables. Lots of them. Also olive oil, safflower oil, cheese, nuts & legumes, beans, fruits, tofu & other meat substitutes, whey protein powder, eggs, yogurt, milk (both cow milk and almond milk), whole grain bread, bran flakes, oatmeal, and did I mention vegetables? Probably other stuff I'm not remembering right now,…

Actually, the butter substitutes tend to be cheaper. The only butter substitute one should avoid are those made from partially hydrogenated oil. Just look at the nutrition label to see if it has any trans fats (or look at the ingredient list). If not, then the only other concern is flavor.

If you were discarded and used for research, then you wouldn't be here to complain about it. Your opinion is biased. I, for one, welcome our new fetal overlords.

I pre-log meals to force myself to adhere to my calorie goal. It helps with overeating during a meal and throwing my calorie balance for the day out of whack. As for my meals, I eat six times a day. It keeps me energetic and focused throughout the day, with no stomach growling to distract me. So I try to divide my calories…

I can see from your pictures that what you recommend works for you, but everyone's body doesn't work exactly the same. Further, there is no evidence that saturated fat causes weight gain on a caloric deficit. In fact, that's quite impossible. So telling people to avoid saturated fat is pointless in a discussion about…

It's very easy to get your iron on a vegetarian diet. Oatmeal, oat flakes, pretty much all veggies, nuts/almonds, beans. Probably others, but the point is you can get plenty of iron (I currently get too much). I'm ovo-lacto vegetarian, so I also eat cheese and eggs, which provides more iron as well as B vitamins. However,…

No. http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/aspartame Aspartame has not been shown to cause any harm to humans, period.

Saturated fat isn't harmful in moderate amounts. Canola oil only has one gram less than olive oil per serving, so the difference in minimal. Olive oil also contains other benefits such as antioxidants and is linked to improved cognition and improved cardiovascular outcomes. I don't use olive oil exclusively, because it's…

Okay, but do you look like Jay Cutler? If no, then BMI is probably a more accurate indicator of your body mass.
-
The point is it depends on the individual. If people can lose weight with cheat days, who are we to tell them it's a bad idea?
-
Really? I currently eat 1500 calories a day for a 1000 calorie deficit. If I were trying to lose 1lb, then I would be eating 2000 calories. In order for me to blow a 3500 calorie weekly deficit in one day, I would have to eat 5500 calories. I would vomit well before that.

If you eat a lot of fruits and veggies, then it's very easy to go well above the vitamin C and vitamin A requirements. As you pointed out, plant-based vitamin A is not an issue and excess vitamin C is just peed out. Excess iron and calcium can be problem, but that depends on other health factors. Since I'm ovo-lacto…

When you end up with a mineral deficiency.

How about a stir fry? I love them and prefer to eat my veggies that way, though I still have salads. You can add whatever protein you want to it. I also throw in a serving of finely ground flaxseed for the omega-3 and fiber.

Not true at all. Soy protein isolate is essentially a purified form of soy. What does that mean? It contains less chemicals than an unprocessed soybean. Soy protein is perfectly healthy and there is no evidence that moderate use of soy protein is any more harmful than whey protein, which is the most popular protein…

Why in the world would you blame the doctors? They're not miracle workers. The wife may be partially to blame as she could have just stopped responding to his demands for 10K calories worth of food, but that's a lot to ask. The person who is actually to blame is the person who died.

Try eating more often. That has helped me with "hunger headaches" and just feeling crappy on calorie-restricted diets. I'm also ovo-lacto vegetarian, so getting plenty of protein and healthy fats is essential. I personally eat like a Hobbit. Breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner. ^_^

I had my gallbladder removed and felt so much better. I was able to eat foods without pain and for some reason it felt like I had more energy for exercise. However, because I can now eat foods that I couldn't before the surgery, I ended up gaining a lot of weight eating calorie dense fatty foods, putting me way over on my…

Soda is fine so long as you're not getting anywhere near a significant percentage of your calories from sugar. They are empty calories, so there is an issue of vitamin deficiencies. However, if you're getting all of your vitamins and minerals from the other food you eat, then sugar is not a huge deal. There is no evidence…

Thank you.

Yeah, you're ignoring the fact that your body requires calories just to keep you alive. You have to factor that into your daily caloric needs. Find out your BMR, multiply it by 1.2 (or more depending on how active your lifestyle is) and then subtract 1000 calories. That's what you eat to lose 2lb/week. You would also need…

Diet soda doesn't have any calories. Are you cutting out because of the expense? If you're adding lots of sugar to your coffee, maybe try switching to zero calorie sweetener. Or try switching to tea! Tea provides other benefits aside from a little caffeine kick when you drink in moderation (about 4 cups a day max).

You do seem like you're at a low weight. What's your height? I think your parents are just looking out for you and they have a point. Eating "clean" doesn't change how much calories your body burns. Creating a modest caloric deficit will lead to the weight loss everyone looks for (losing fat and not muscle). If you have…

Also, you can add food to the database whenever you want. I cook a lot of Ethiopian food and add them to the database whenever I can't find them. You can look up the nutrition facts elsewhere or break it down by the ingredients.
-
That's what the recipe calculator is for. You log all of the ingredients in the amounts that you measured and then choose how many servings it will be. The calculator will give you the nutrition facts per serving.

Yeah, the sugar limit should really only apply to added sugar, such as sodas or sweets. If my sugar comes from fruit, then I don't worry about it at all.
-
How is that possible? I couldn't drink that much even if I tried. I used to drink about 6 cans a day at my peak, but that was essentially sipping on soda for most of my waking hours. Diet soda helped me lose weight because I used it to replace my regular soda consumption, which equates to a huge decrease in my daily…

It's good to log as much as you can, but if logging becomes a chore than you'll be more likely to quit. If hypertension is not an issue for you and or if your diet is only moderate in sodium as it is, then logging mustard or pickles or olives because of the sodium may be counterproductive. For me, I have no issues with…

Yes, the reason is that your coworker's germophobia protects you. If you're surrounded by people who don't care about hygiene or cleanliness, then germs are able to spread very easily. People who are germophobes may or may not be hurting themselves, but they are mitigating their part in the spread of germs. Clean water and…

Good. I'd rather not eat rotten meat; it's generally bad for your health.
