Carbs aren't "bad." They're just a macronutrient and macronutrients don't have any moral value. Refined carbs are easy to overeat, though, and stripped of most nutrients, so some people find it easier to cut down on all carbs in order to lose weight. Not everyone can "just eat less" of the foods that got them fat.

Wow. This is a terrific thread! If only all MFP comment threads could be this informative. Thank you, @AlabasterVerve!

I agree with some of the above. Don't worry about such minute things. All calorie values are wild estimates anyway. Just track your cheese as it's listed on the package.

I think 63 stopped being "sort of...elderly" a half-century ago. My mother's 71-year-old ex-boyfriend just started Crossfit!

A Fitbit is a good choice if you like data and think that data will help motivate you to be active. I've had a Fitbit Zip (which operates on a watch battery), a Charge, and now a Charge HR. The HR has worked well. I charge it daily when I'm in the shower or bath. I also like the interactive social aspect of Fitbit. I have…

I think it's dangerous to make generalized statements like this. Maybe it wouldn't teach *you* healthy habits and maybe *you* wouldn't find it sustainable, but everybody is different. There are lots of ways to manipulate you caloric intake, lose weight, and improve your health markers.

There's also the Libra app for Android and The Hacker's Diet Online (https://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/online/), both of which do the same thing as Happy Scale and Trendweight. I really like HS, but it's unfortunately not available for Android phones.

I bought a Zip in October of 2014 and have lost 40 lbs since then. Now I have the Charge, which I love. Fitbit also seems like a pretty cool company, as they will usually replace defective/lost/stolen Fitbits for free.

I'm 46 and looking to lose about 70 lbs. Feel free to add me!

I'm 46 (how exactly that happened, I'm not sure!) and have just restarted my weight loss journey. They say it's tougher at our age, but I actually think the opposite is true because I know so much more about health and nutrition than I did 20 or even 10 years ago.

Thanks for this. There are plenty of apps and sites that do the same thing, but I like the idea of having it all on my own spreadsheet. The only thing I'd add is a column showing the moving average's daily change rate. But, I have no idea how to do that! :)
