Genetics certainly plays a role in your metabolism. Everyone burns off calories at different rates, and that is ultimately a result of your genes. But the vast majority of people, myself included, are obese because they eat too much. Except in cases where people have serious medical conditions that impact their metabolism,…

I often joke about going on a "Hops and Barley detox". Occasionally I encounter people who don't get the joke and rspond with a comment like " oh, it sounds so natural".

I'm in Sunderland. Feel free to add me.

I hope my feet don't shrink. I like my ridiculously sized clownfeet. I'm a UK size 15 (which is US 16 or EU 51)

Deep Fried Cream Egg... For when one heart attack just isn't enough.

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter recently did an advertising campaign here in the UK. They changed the recipe and used the slogan "I can't believe I Can't Believe It's Not Butter just got better". The idea behind that is ridiculous. Their name suggests that you already can't tell the difference between their product and…

Because your original starting weight was lower than your new starting weight, it's measuring your total loss from your previous starting weight. If you go to your Check-In page and click the "Edit previous entries" button, you can change your starting weight and delete any previous weigh-ins that were lower than that. MFP…

Although my personal experience with them is limited (mostly due to time constraints) the Persona series always looks like it has a fantastic style. Persona 4 in particular looks like an amazing game.

Beer beer and more beer. Possibly with some tequila or some other daft shots mixed in. I'm going out with my work mates on Easter Sunday, and that always results in me drinking far too much. They're a bad influence on me. Not that I take much influencing. It'll be a good day though. Looking forward to it.

I'm from Sunderland. Anyone is welcome to add me.

I'd consider myself a geek. You can probably tell that from my custom ticker with pikachu in it.

I'm from sunny Sunderland. Well, that's a lie, I'm just from Sunderland. It's never sunny here.

If you google "Sodium in X g salt" Google will give you the amount of sodium at the very top.

A doner kebab. There's nothing better than a massive pile of greasy doner kebab meat wrapped in a naan bread with some chilli and garlic sauce.

Maybe set a small target for now (maybe to lose 10 or 15lb), and reevaluate when you get there (or close) and see if you have another number in mind. You don't have to deside right now what your ultimate goal is, set an intermediate goal and figure it out as you go.

I use runkeeper and the only issue I have is that I have to manually pause it if I walk inside or through a subway or something, because it loses the GPS and freaks out, thinking I'm walking places that I'm not. If that isn't an issue for you, it's a great app otherwise.

Make sure you've gone to your check-in page and clicked the "Edit previous entries" button and changed your starting weight there. It might also help to delete any previous entries on that page that have you below your new starting weight.

If logging your food is frustrating you, it can't do any harm to try giving it up for a couple of weeks. Give it a trial, see if it works for you. Plenty of people do lose weight without logging every calorie that passes their lips. Trying it for a two or three weeks isn't going to do any massive harm. If you stop losing…

I'm 396lb and started losing weight a couple of months ago. I don't know exactly how heavy I was since my scales only went up to 400lb, but a few weeks ago I finally got under that point and it gave me a number. I'm currently focusing on limiting my calories, I'm still eating far too many unhealthy, high sodium foods, but…

You could record yourself reciting chemistry information and then play it back on an MP3 player whilst exercising. I'd suggest trying not to read directly from a book, but first summarize it in bullet point form and record that. Spending time summarizing them in your own words will help you learn the information, and…

Vodka has been filtered and distilled so much, essentially all that remains is Ethanol (pure alcohol) and water. Neither of which have fat burning properties. He's joking.

Whilst generally my family are supportive of my weight loss, there are occasions where they say something that is unsupportive and annoys me. It makes me feel a lot better to think about it like this: However wrong they are, however much they come across like an idiot/*kitten*/whatever - their heart is in the right place.…

I love my beer. I don't drink tons on an average week - I'll generally have two or three on a Saturday, two or three on a Sunday, and maybe a couple during the week on a normal week. But if I'm off work and getting together with friends or family, I'll drink a lot more. I like a very bitter, hoppy Real Ale, but generally I…

I read this article a couple of months ago that takes a similarly jokey tone, but I actually think it's funnier than The Onion's one: http://botherer.org/2014/01/27/low-carb-diet-tips-delicious-alternatives-to-those-carby-treats/

True, true.

That sounds like the best way to consume your water. Well, if you replace the Jack with a decent whiskey, anyway.

I'm 24, 6'1" and am 399lb. I'm working on making small, sustainable lifestyle changes, one at a time. Feel free to add me if you want.

If I know I'm going to be drinking a lot one weekend, I'll try to decrease my calorie intake during the week so I can consume more at the weekend and still have it average out to the same. Or if the drinking is unplanned, I'll try to lower my calorie intake for a few days after to balance it out. Obviously that isn't an…

Why would sugar make you vomit? Our bodies love sugar. That's why we crave it. You could eat 10 teaspoons of sugar on it's own and it wouldn't cause you to vomit. It's got nothing to do with phosphoric acid. I stopped reading after that part. That article doesn't deserve any more of my time.

Thanks for all the kind words and friend requests, everyone. It means a lot. I was in a similar position. I didn't want to bring it up in my initial post, because it was already quite long and I didn't want to ramble on for even longer, but in 2011 I lost a bunch of weight. I don't know how much weight, but I had lost a…
