If you can afford to hire a trainer for a few sessions, I'd recommend it. I started out new to weightlifting 10 months ago, and hiring a trainer was the best money I've spent. He started me with a beginning lifting program (free weights mostly with a few machines). I've advanced to squats, dead lifts, etc., but it took me…

<Me with 10 months of weight lifting, moderate cardio, a small calorie restriction, and no "off-limit" foods. I've got a long ways to go, but just love weight lifting, the slow & steady results, and the way my body is changing. Sure beats the yo-yo dieting, hours of cardio, constant hunger and cravings of the many other…

Don't worry about people looking at you at the gym. All 305 + lbs. of me went there about 10 months ago (through today) and I'm doing all sorts of exercises. I just laugh when I think about things jiggling when I'm doing jumping jacks and jump rope. I'm sure I've been entertaining there! :). You just need to care about you…

I'd be careful making the blanket statement "running is good for you". Glad you enjoy it, but it isn't for everyone. It can lead to overuse injuries, stress fractures, etc. I think you need to examine your fitness goals, and choose activities that you really enjoy to reach those goals. I think beginning running is popular…

My highest weight was 350 +. Started MFP over 300 lbs about 10 months ago. I don't weigh myself any longer, just track changes with progress pics and how my clothes fit. My current pic shows my progress from high weight until today. I'm focusing on weight lifting, full body exercises, with a bit of cardio thrown in as I…

I've changed my workout focus recently from weightlifting and cardio, to mostly weightlifting and body weight exercises, but have trouble accurately adding calories expended into MFP for the weightlifting exercises/reps. How did you track this? I was thinking maybe I shouldn't be so concerned about tracking calories…

I'm similar in age, weight and height as you. I've been focusing mostly on weight training for the past 10 months, with cardio mixed in if I have the energy (after weight training program). My progress has been slow, but steady. I don't weigh on the scale any more, just track my progress with photos and how my clothes fit.…

Wow! Very inspiring as I'm approx at your starting size right now (after about a 65 lb loss + lots of muscle gain). Can't wait to see what my next year brings. Thanks for the photos.

My fat, diabetic uncle said "you don't miss many meals, do you?". He was not a nice guy (now deceased) and really had no room to talk considering his weight and medical issues.

Wow! I'm super impressed. I just started lifting weights for the first time in my life in July 2013 and love it so far. Have quite a bit of fat to lose, but I'm confident I'll get there. By looking at these lifting numbers, I know I have tons of weight/lifting progression to add slowly to help me reach my goal. ( I'll now…

Just some input from my recent positive experience. I started about your weight back in July 2013 and am not sure how much weight I've dropped, as I'm only concerned with fat loss, inches reduced and getting into smaller sizes. I do not weight myself much anymore as the scale doesn't show a thing. I think 2 lbs. of weight…

Inches could be shifting around too, depending on how much weight/fat you need to lose. Gravity ;)

Excellent post. Very inspirational and hits close to my heart. You should be very proud of yourself.

I agree. Four pounds of weight could be anything...water weight, sodium, muscle gain, etc. I doubt 4 pounds of food was ingested in a few hours and showed up on the scale. I don't think bullying people about scale weight fluctuations is beneficial to anyone. My trainer said using the scale to track progress is like looking…

Just one more point, my trainer says that if you wait until you are hungry to eat, your blood sugar has already dropped too low.

I'm not an expert by any means; but I also have a fair amount of weight to lose. I've cut calories to your level (about 1200) in the past and was a "cardio queen". I'd drop 40 pounds, then just get total burnout and quit. I'd gain back the 40 pounds and more. I was a classic yo-yo dieter for 20+ years. I recently hired a…

I also cannot count on one hand how many greasy burger commercials I have to watch while working out. The advertising is just everywhere.
