  • Which 10K are you doing on April 23?
  • I use a chest strap -- it works fine, but I am only a 34-36 A, so that's probably a factor. The strap sits just below my boobs and it doesn't move around. I'm not sure if I would trust a HRM that's ONLY a watch. How does it gauge your heart rate? My chest strap works in tandem with my Garmin GPS/sports watch.
  • I'm 5'2" and weigh 111 lbs. I don't bring water with me on runs 10 miles and under unless it's hot. For runs over 10 miles, I carry coconut water and plain water. I do not eat GUs unless I'm over 14 miles, then I'll eat one after every 3-4 miles. About 60-90 minutes before my long runs, I have coffee and a piece of toast…
  • Good for you!
  • I agree with Steen --- go for a 30-minute brisk walk. You'll feel better and you'll burn calories. Then eat some fruit, steamed veggies and yes, a few carbs so your stomach doesn't get upset from all that roughage -- like a piece of bread.
  • Thanks -- I added my ticker. I also re-adjusted my goal to 190 miles for February, as I got a late start.
  • What size running shoe do you wear? I'm asking because your running shoes should be a half size to one full size larger than your regular shoes. Perhaps your current ones are too small, hence the blistering?
  • Forgot to add: Week 1: 30 miles Week 2: 51 miles
  • Please add me to this challenge. My goal is to log at least 200 miles. I already run 25-30 miles a week, and then log another 20-25 miles/week walking my dogs and briskly walking 20-30 minutes at lunch every day. Today: 8 mile run, 3.5 mile walking dogs = 11.5 miles
  • YESSSS!!!!!! But I'm one of those crazy runners. And for the folks who'd rather go to Vegas instead of a cruise, please keep this idea in mind! I'm thinking this December -- in fact, we could also run the Rock and Roll HALF Marathon while we're there.
  • It looks like I'm one of the few people who'd rather go to Vegas than a cruise. if anyone else is interested in going to Las Vegas, perhaps this December (to coincide with the Rock n' Roll Marathon), let me know! Or I can just post a new topic for "Vegas." :-)
  • I say just go for an easy 2 mile run, or light calisthenics.
  • VEGAS!!!! I'm not a huge fan of Carnival -- two friends of mine have gone on Carnival and there were problems (customer service, food, etc.). I'm not sure it would be a good idea to be around all the food that the cruise lines have. Another friend just came back from a cruise with his parents, and they said all they…
  • As a marathoner and person who's studying to be an RRCA-certified running coach, my best advice is: Take it slowly. Don't run more than three days a week at first. Remember that it is normal to feel sore! You may get shin splints -- a common side effect for beginning runners. Also, be sure to stretch afterwards, and don't…
  • In your case, the weight loss (or lack thereof) may depend on two things: 1) The length of time you've been on your current workout and diet. If you've only been doing it a couple of weeks, I wouldn't expect huge results at first. 2) This could be a bigger factor -- you may be gaining muscle mass -- which, as you know,…
  • I like the country Italian salad, the chicken sausage w/ mango, their fresh produce (esp. red bell peppers, mushrooms, shallots, blueberries, strawberries, etc.). I also love their chicken marsala, orange chicken and chips, but I can't buy them anymore b/c they have a TON of sodium. :-(
  • I just started tracking my food a couple of days ago, and like other people here, I am gobsmacked at the TON of sodium in food! I thought I was being good by ordering a turkey sandwich with a whole bunch of veggies and no may at Subway for lunch. So I was disgusted to find out how much sodium is in it. Ditto some of my…
  • I'll order it tonight from Amazon -- so should start sometime next week.
  • I will say that there are two advantages of an elliptical machine if your main goal is to lose weight and gain cardiovascular fitness (not necessarily train for races, like I do): 1) Yes, ellipticals are easier on your knees! 2) You get to work out your arms on an elliptical.
  • Hi there! Elliptical machines do not necessarily burn more calories than treadmills -- the calorie counters on both machines are infamous for being WAY off. The # calories you burn depends on your effort. For me. I find running on a treadmill harder than an elliptical because that's where I do my speed work if I'm not near…
  • HMKan: Great job! Remember that running/walking on a treadmill is easier than doing so outdoors. So raise the incline to 1% to mimic the wind resistance/terrain you'd experience outside on the roads.
  • How much room do you need to do the workout? Our main TV is in a room that is pretty narrow :-(.
  • First, run slowly. You don't say how fast you're going, but if you go out too fast, your calves (and other body parts) can get sore. Also, after a few minutes, stop and stretch your calves. You can stretch them by leaning against a wall, or stepping on a curb and dropping your heel.
  • I forgot to add that I exercise 5 days a week, so I get 400 - 900 more cals/day beyond the 1200 that this site recommended. But it's still really hard for me to eat under 2,000 cals/day ....
  • I just joined MyFitnessPal today. I'm not sure how I can avoid going over my daily calorie needs a day: 1200 seems too low! Anyway, here are my stats: current weight: 111.8 pounds goal weight: 105 pounds by the end of March 2011
  • Thanks, Toots! I love how I get fast feedback here!
  • For what it's worth, I ran 6 miles at an easy pace this morning. It took me 59 minutes.
  • Are these miles done running/walking or bicycling? It's much easier to bike 10 miles than run 10 miles. My old coach told me that it takes 3-4 bike miles to equal 1 running mile.
  • I am 5'2" as well and joined this site today to track my daily caloric intake and "meet" like-minded people. I hope I can still provide/get support here even though I am not technically overweight and only want to lose 5-7 lbs (I weight 112). I am trying to be as fit as I realistically can with a full-time job, and I am…
