My PF must be the only one in the country where that crap doesn't happen. We have people dressed in tiny shorts or tanks or compression tights. We have very fit "muscle heads" (even a few females) and quite large people and everything in between. We have gaggles of ladies who treat their workout as social hour and we have…

I tend to buy junior sizes, but when I was 120 lbs I wore a size 7 and sometimes a 5, and I'm about half an inch taller than you. I currently wear a 9 with significantly more weight.

I have this scale. The weight is accurate but the other stuff? Not completely...it gives a slightly different reading, for example, if I use it before or after I pee in the morning. However, I'm using it more for trend watching than pinpoint accuracy, and it hasn't given any crazy readings, so it appears to be at least…

Butternut squash soup is amazing, and can be used as a base for all sorts of sweet/savory soups and stews. Chilis are also a good option. Experiment with different meats like ground turkey breast, pulled pork tenderloin, stuff that is leaner than beef. Also, experiment with different beans and veggies, and try roasting…

I'm going to go workout. Then I'm going to have a KFC double down. Thanks to this thread, I'm also going to have potato wedges, right up to my cal limit. Then I'm going to pig out on salad and grilled chicken for the rest of the day. Good plan! Thanks!

I am so totally having a KFC double down after my workout, in honor of this thread. Thanks for the inspiration!

Who is this guy? The bad info fairy?

Also, doing some exercises very slowly increases the intensity a great deal. Think of planks and such. Same goes for lifting and holding a weight instead of lifting and immediately putting it back down.

Unless that specific restaurant has posted nutritional info for their menu, you're just going to be guessing. Even a similar dish elsewhere might be made with wildly different ingredients. I would just look at nutritional info for several similar things and estimate high.

Yes, the calorie counts are what I wanted a fitness monitor for. I wanted a better grasp on my own TDEE and how my daily activity affects it, not just an estimation from a calculator online. But the Fitbit, Vivofit, Loop, Up, etc. etc. etc. all gave some ridiculous numbers at times. They completely miss things like steps…

Quinoa, beans, lots and lots of seafood.

Robert Downey Jr., every time.

If you want the heart rate capability, get a Garmin Vivofit. I've tried most of the activity trackers out there and found them all to be wildly inaccurate, but the Vivofit was my favorite of the bunch. No recharging, the battery lasts about 9 months, and it's cheap to replace. It has a screen to give info, unlike most of…

Veggies like baby carrots and sugar snap peas dipped in hummus, preferably black bean or lentil hummus (fewer calories, more protein)

I make big batches of things like chili or posole or Moroccan stew and put some in individual serving bowls in the freezer. I also keep some of the healthier soups (Pacific Foods, etc.) on hand, and a few convenience meals like Lean Cuisines and black bean burgers in the freezer.

I make pudding out of Jello instant sugar free fat free pudding, Cool Whip free, and almond milk. I'm experimenting with adding PB2 or protein powders to up the nutritional value, but as is, it's less than 50 calories for a huge serving, about 30 calories for a normal sized serving.

Just curious, for those of you who work out at home, how much did you invest in your equipment? I would much rather do that, but I don't think it would be very economical.
-
*shrug* My ONLY complaint is with the free weights. The only option for deadlifts and such above 50lbs is the Smith. On the other hand, there are some remarkably fit people at my PF, paying $10/month instead of 3 times that for the other gyms. Nobody gives them a hard time.

I love my Zephyr HRM. It's just the chestband, and it connects through bluetooth to a variety of apps on my phone. I have my phone anyway for music/Neflix (depending on what kind of workout I'm doing...I can use cardio equipment much longer if my mind is engaged in a show or movie) and iCardio or Runkeeper or a number of…

Sloppy Joes. You know those Manwich commercials with all the delicious saucy meat falling off the bun? That's about 4 servings right there.

Milkshakes from Sonic. Even the mini milkshakes, which seemed like such a good and healthy choice, are about 450 cals. I mean, what do they make it with, pure lard?

I realize that this is a bit off topic, but it always baffles me when comparing the weight of muscle to the weight of fat, why people would measure the initial amount by weight instead of mass or volume. Why would you measure out a pound of anything and a pound of something else, and then compare their weights? Why…

I'm a tea collector, so I have a bunch of ways. At home I have a Zarafina (like a coffee maker, only for hot tea) and an electric kettle. I also have a Boddhum tea press and several other pots of various sizes. At work I keep a small 2-cup microwavable ceramic pot which has it's own strainer insert. That way I don't have…

For starting out, do Stronglifts. It's super simple, free, and right there on your phone, plus if you search this forum you'll find some great results pics. Later on, when you're more comfortable with lifting and ready to step up your game, that would be the time to switch to NROL.

I also used to hate oatmeal, until I found some flavors I really liked. Kashi hot cereal (not just oatmeal) in Vanilla and Nature's Path in cinnamon blueberry. Then I tried Bob's Red Mill meusli (oatmeal and other grains with dates, raisins and nuts). Once I got used to it all, I can pretty much eat plain oatmeal with half…

Once you have an idea of exactly what you're looking for, keep an eye out at your local sporting goods and running stores, too. Clearance, sales, coupons,etc.... I just snagged a pair of $110 Salomons for $50 because they were the last pair in stock (and happened to be my size!). Not even last year's model, but popular…

Welcome! I'm also in NC. Ideally, you'll walk around the outside of the store: Fresh veggies, meats, dairy, etc. instead of the inside aisles where all the processed stuff is. Personally, I do go through the inside aisles, but I also read labels for everything I buy, and try to find the version with the lowest calories…

So, yeah...if you're comparing the weights of two things, don't you think you would the items by volume, or some other metric, to compare? Or, you know, any measurement other than weight? I mean, logically? How much sense does it make to select a pound of each to compare their weights?
-
It may be that you're eating more than you thought. Are you logging everything you eat? Are you sure about the portion sizes? How are you measuring them? Are you sort of eyeballing and guessing, using measuring cups? The most accurate way to measure your food is with a digital food scale. Get one which has a tare function…

By volume, silly. A cubic inch of muscle weighs more than a cubic inch of fat. Or, in other words, to use your example, a pound of muscle is much smaller than a pound of fat.
