  • Yup, I've gained back about the same amount as you in the past few months. I kept on thinking I just needed to watch my portions a little and snack less. But this week I realized that major discipline and tracking were needed. *sigh* Today I ate under my goal and I feel pretty stuffed from dinner. Getting a lot of my…
  • Breastfeeding burns about 600 calories per day and these are calories that you MUST eat back to maintain your health and milk production. When I was BF-ing I would log 600 calories of exercise per day to account for those burned - I recorded it as swimming "breaststroke" ha ha! Actual exercise should also be tracked…
  • I'll get what I want at a restaurant, but usually just eat half of it and save the other half for another meal. Even the yummy healthy vegan food at Native Foods has a lot of calories due to portion size. I found that the Gandhi Bowl has about 1000 calories - I'll pack up half even before I even start eating.
  • Thanks for the tip, Stacy! They added me to the recipe group - lots of great ideas there.
  • Ooh, I'm on Pinterest, too. Kym, those foods look sooo scrumptious! I think I'll sit down over the weekend and start a thread about websites, cookbooks, and other resources. Will certainly include your info. Thanks!
  • I won't keep you in suspense any longer. The steamed and marinated tempeh was MUCH improved. I dare say it was tasty! Nice texture, too.. still had a nutty and chewy element. So I would definitely buy it again, now that I know what to do with the stuff! Maybe photos next time, too.
  • Okay, I took the leftover chunk of tempeh out of the fridge. I'm steaming it right now, will marinade for 24 hours and eat it with my dinner Thursday night. I'll bet you can't wait to get my review tomorrow!!
  • Thanks Melissa, great idea! Here's one the I tried a while back - sweet potato veggie burger. I'll have to try your suggestions to keep the patty together, as they did come apart a little. http://kblog.lunchboxbunch.com/2012/02/easy-sweet-potato-veggie-burgers-with.html
  • Hi neveend! Glad you found us! :flowerforyou:
  • Oh my gosh, I forgot that you're gluten free, too! Sorry, I have no suggestions. I hope someone else can chime in. How was your Day 1 today? I'm still chuckling about our veggie stir fry for dinner. I put in Trader Joe's tempeh - I didn't like it and neither did hubby, but he was a trooper.. doused it in more soy sauce and…

  • Thanks everyone for the book recommendations and support! I went through my pantry this weekend and did (as you say) find a lot of apparently vegetarian dishes that had milk protein or whey in them. It's just my first day going vegan and already I have a new appreciation for my vegan friends and those with food allergies -…
  • I'm 5'6" too. I've been losing nearly 1 lb per week on 1350 calories. That's not counting my exercise calories (no more than 300 per day) that I eat back. If I eat healthy filling foods, I don't feel hungry or tired. Feeling good.. hope it works for you too!
  • I'm going to allow myself a few products in this "grey area" until they're used up and I figure out a good alternative. I have half a canister of chocolate-shake protein powder which has some kind of "milk protein" in it. I'm not going to throw it out. I have to be reasonable - I work full time and have small children, so…
  • True! But I would point out that some people need a short-term challenge or experiment to prove to themselves that they can really do it. One of my friends did a 1-month vegan trial and now, over a year later, he's still going strong. So, Happy4life - I see in your profile that you're studying Public Health. I hope you…
  • It's a busy day with the kids, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the thoughtful comments Liketobefit and Vicki! :flowerforyou: I will read up on Dr. Fuhrman soon - from your description I can see that this is a healthy diet, although I'd likely have a problem with limiting grains and starches.
  • As for dinner tonight - macaroni and cheese with the kids! I already had pizza a couple times this week.
  • This is an important point! I was surprised to learn that, here in the U.S., practically all chickens/eggs come from deplorable factory farms. You really need to raise your own to know they were treated humanely. In contrast, it is reasonbly easy (but expensive) to find beef that's humanely-raised - Whole Foods has started…
  • I'm getting a new appreciation for my friends who are vegan. There is hidden dairy in sooo many products! See pictures below. Now, I know this isn't exactly health food.. but wouldn't you think a vegan is safe snacking on a few Tostitos "Hint of Lime" chips? Wrongo! There's also a *hint* of sour cream in there. :frown:
  • Hi Ladies! I've been vegetarian off-and-on over the years, not really sure I have the dedication to go full vegan. Also, I was raised Orthodox Christian (Ukrainian). I'm not really a church-goer at this point in life, but I couldn't help but notice that our Lent starts on Monday.. and that the dietary restrictions are very…
  • You might want to join the "Windy City Pals" group on MFP. It seems to be mostly a young/single crowd, but a good start. Feel free to add me as a friend.
  • I believe it! I was overweight when I went vegetarian in college. Also not a fan of salads, so it was lots and lots of carbs and junk food. I've been an omnivore for years now. Actually thinking of going vegan, but this time I'll be careful to make healthy choices! Good luck to you in your quest for fitness!
  • I'm a 42-year-old full-time-workin' mom of 2 preschoolers. Recently discovered that I need bifocals! :grumble: Trying to get fit and stay fit for the long haul. Looking for fun and supportive friends - feel free to add me, people!
  • Are you a good swimmer? From what I've heard the swim portion can be the hardest - especially because training can't prepare you for being in the water, getting kicked in the head by other people. :noway: Anyway, you're in good company - I know plenty of people who get into marathons and such in their 30's and 40's. Good…
  • I feel your pain! I hate it when the first half of the day goes wonky.. then you spend the rest of the day playing catch-up. Hope you had a good run!
  • We're talking about dietary restrictions of a certain faith group, not debating theology.. That being said, it might be worthwhile to gather up some folks who commented in this thread and create a Group in 2 weeks once Lent starts. The focus doesn't have to be Orthodox, per se. How about "40 Day Vegan Challenge (aka…
  • How tall are you? I'm 5'6" and we have similar weight goals. I went from 134 to 128 in the past month, most of which came off my gut. I want to lose another 3-5 lbs., but my stomach is already definitely flatter than it was at 134 (as seen in my icky profile pic.) BTW, I'm 42 and had 2 kids via c/s, younger one is now…
  • Yep, Ukrainian Orthodox here. If your traditions are like ours, then you're basically eating vegan, right? No meat, fish, dairy, eggs, butter, and oil. Same as any vegan, you should ensure getting enough protein, not just any calories. I'd say eat more beans, lentils, soy, as well as whole grains - brown rice, quinoa. I'm…
  • I've been meaning to try this with the box of mix sitting in my pantry. I think you should follow whatever recipe you find that looks good, just do your own cooking method. For what it's worth, baking falafel was recommended to me by an actual Middle Eastern person - a health conscious Palastinian-American guy at work. So…
  • I do whatever the docs on RealAge.com tell me. So.. multivitamin, fish oil, and vit D. As for fiber, I make sure there's enough in my diet (whole grain, beans, veggies, fruit) every day.
  • Thanks! This made sense once I thought about it a little more. Thanks also to others who posted about appropriate protein intake. In looking at my food diary this month, there is never a day that I reached 90 grams and just a few where I broke 60. If I want to put on some of this "newbie" muscle mass that folks are…
