I made it on my first work trip run this month! (of two cross country trips) The place I’m staying in center city Philly is right next to a running store, so I got in yesterday in time to check in with them for recommendations. Luckily they told me about a nice trail not too far from my place along the Schuylkill, so…

@girlinahat like @mbaker566 mentioned we do have nettles in the PNW, and we have earthquakes too! Not so many poisonous snakes in western Washington though, so at least there’s that. I’m so inspired by the question of them month! My medals are just hanging up randomly on hooks—including one at my work, because I did a run…

First April run today and I got to try my new trail running shoes! I signed up for a trail race the weekend after this one, and am headed to the east coast for work for the rest of this week, so I squeezed in 5 miles this evening. They were great! So far so good for the Salomon Speedcross. Now I just have to figure out how…

Last month I went for 60 and ended up with 70.This month is the last month of HM training, a trail race, and two work trips across the country. So it’s going to be a lot and I just need to hang on for the ride... I’m in for 70!

Just getting in here under the wire! I beat my goal by 10 miles, so that was fun! My parents came to town for a long weekend and we (& kids & dog!) went up to the mountains. It was all pretty relaxed so I got two runs in, mostly on schedule (Friday & Sunday instead of Thursday and Saturday). Today’s 8 miles were especially…

I got the Forerunner 645, but have also read great things about the Vivoactive! I really like having it attached to me, for sure! @tcunbeliever Thanks for the encouragement! I never would have thought I’d like to run any kind of distance for at least the first 35 years of my life! But then it just kind of clicked at some…

My kids especially like it with Bragg liquid aminos

I just recently switched from a Fitbit to Garmin and dropped about 5.5 lbs in a week, which sounds like it would be great (and part of me was quite happy about it), but I’m also training for my first half marathon and so I got worried about not fueling the running well. But things seem to have straightened out. 2 lbs found…

Rest day yesterday, then back to 4.5 miles on a beautiful evening tonight. I tossed in some fartleks, which were fun. As far as I can tell, the first Hal Higdon novice HM plan seems to call for most miles being easy conversational pace, but I figured a few fartleks on the least taxing run of the week might be ok. It feels…

I would suggest some fun and active things to do, like some of the posters mentioned above. Suggest a walk, or a bike ride when you have some time. Or dancing, ice skating, paddle boarding, canoeing—there are so many active things you can invite her to do that might feel more fun than the gym. As others said, lead by…

Here’s another vote for walking! It really adds up, and can lead to running, which I find incredibly time efficient as exercise. Also, it’s not really necessary to change into different clothes to do it, it can be easy to get friends & colleagues to come along, and is kid-friendly too. I sometimes can even make “walking…

Cross training today meant an easygoing 14 mi bike ride with kids (my two plus an extra teen who hadn’t been on a bike in ages—they did great!). Bakery + bookshop is a powerful draw for this crew.. And I signed up for another race! I was motivated to have the occasion to run in my new trail shoes, and signed up for a 4.5…

Ok, I decided 8 p.m. was late enough to work on a Saturday evening, so I wrapped up and booked it down to REI before they closed at 9. I picked up a pair of Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX (the waterproof one, which generally seems like a good idea around here). Pricy, but with the discount, my dividend, and their return policy…

So I came into work this evening because it would be quiet, and I’m behind, and because I’ll probably take this Friday off because my dad is coming to visit....and now all of this trail shoe excitement and talk about the REI member sale is making me want to ditch this plan and head to the downtown Seattle REI before it…

So quiet! Happy spring, everyone! Any goals or recent successes?

Ok, thanks so much for this and for the link—I think I’m getting closer to figuring this out. Garmin seems to be calculating my total burn lower than Fitbit: on otherwise comparable days, they both sent about 2600 calories to MFP where the Fitbit day was 18K steps including a 4 mile run, and the Garmin was 20K steps…

This is all really helpful, thanks! It gives me a lot to troubleshoot, although I still find it confusing. I set my activity level to “active” because I still get about 10K-15K steps in addition to my running, and with the Fitbit, even when I didn’t run, if I got 10K steps I wouldn’t get a negative adjustment. Today I did…

@amymoreorless and @elise4270 Thanks for the trail shoes conversation! I also want to try out some trail running shoes, and this gives me some good directions.

Post work sunny run again (I could get used to this!) I tried to go much more slowly to keep my heart rate lower, and made some progress. Still liking my Garmin, still worried that it’s not pushing over enough calories (I’m down 4 lbs since I got it on Sat...I know I was retaining water and was due to drop some, but that’s…

@quilteryoyo That all sounds like a real scare. So good you’re getting 100% consistent feedback to do what you want to do anyway! @Sparx_81 My go-to for the annoying tickly cough is hot water with honey and lemon. Cup after cup of it if necessary...

This may not be popular, but I do teach my kids (16 & 10) to read labels, not for calories, but for sugar. It’s not “evil”—we eat ice cream and bake brownies and all of that. But given how much extra sugar is in so many things, I think a little awareness is educational—so, for example, when it comes to yogurt or ice cream…

OP, I’m 5’ 5 1/2”, and I think I’m right close to your weight (I’m hovering right around 167), and am in US size 8 jeans right now. Build makes all the difference—I’m 36H as well, and so hope to lose some lbs up there too. I don’t know what I’ll feel best at, but I’m headed towards 150 and will reassess there. I’m hoping…

Another nice, dry, warm evening run. It wasn’t quite as late as last night, so I had a bit more pep. @Avidkeo That sounds like an exciting move.. I think I’m finally at a place where I appreciate being in a city (which is handy because that’s where my job is). In the past 10 years we lived in 1 biggish city (this one), 1…

All the talk about when to register for races inspired me to bite the bullet and sign up for the Vancouver HM, so now that’s firmly in the plans.. and I’ve been wanting to run the Lake Union 10K for three years now, and it’s happening on my birthday, so I’ll probably sign up for that one before the price goes up at the end…

@eleanorhawkins I feel you! Saturday was probably my 10th 5K since 2009 or so, and the first one I ever raced. I have always done them with kids, and have always needed to stick with them. (And when running with my partner, we have kept company with our differently paced kids!) My dad was a runner when I was a kid in the…

@workaholic_nurse I’m so glad you’re ok! And so sorry about the car and the cows. @ContraryMaryMary What a gorgeous hike/run! @MobyCarp It seems like you’re in excellent shape for Boston, and that the two races worked really well together! I got to run my much-anticipated 5K—not new to these but I’ve never tried to race…

We are very close in stats and goal and trajectory, and I hear your frustration. I eat most of my exercise calories back and don’t do much strength training (yet—I am training for a half marathon and plan to incorporate more after that). What struck me about what you wrote (besides all the good choices and habits!) is that…

Another after-work run—I forgot my running pants, so had to come home first. Luckily Daylight Savings Time meant that I still had some light to get the miles in. Next up is a 5K this weekend—can’t wait! (First non-kid accompanied one in several years of doing them, for me to actually race!) March goal: 60 miles 3/2 6 mi…

Preportioning and finding lower calorie treats that I like has been effective for me. My newest find is chocolate chip meringue cookies from Trader Joe’s—they’re 30 calories each and taste so sugary that I can’t even think about anything else sweet for a bit. There are some cookies at Asian grocery stores called “Hello…
