Good luck this weekend!

My $.02 - I would go out with the 4:15 pace group. If (a big IF) you are feeling great at mile 21, then pick up the pace and see what you can get done. I think your half time is still a couple minutes slow for breaking 4:00. The problem is if you are out 20-30 seconds a mile too fast at the start, you may end up slowing…

Congrats on sticking it out! Even with training and experience, you still need things to "go right" on race day. As I often preach to anyone who will listen; 26.2 is a LONG way to run and I never understand why people are in such a hurry to do so (general statement, not directed at you). There is no magic to the distance.…

Oh good, this thread again... You can do it running, but you have to be pretty fast and pretty heavy. 8 miles @ 7:30 pace = 1,000+ calories in an hour for me (I weigh ~ 180). That's close to my half marathon pace, so I do it as a tempo run (once a week at most).

Paced the 1:45 group to a 1:44:55 at the Long Beach half marathon - good times, my first time as a pace group leader. 5K in 20:45 the following weekend - was hoping for some AG hardware (smaller race) but I ended up 4th. There were 10 year age breaks and some 40 year old guy ran a 16:57!
-
Oh wait, you could strap to your back and use it like a parachute to created extra resistance while running!

The good news is running is a rubber suit will help you sweat more and thus drop weight! The bad news is it will all come back as soon as you drink water... This is ONLY of value if you are trying to drop pounds to make weight for an MMA fight or wrestling match.
-
FWIW - the best thing that ever happened to my half marathons was marathon training. I also remember shattering my 10K PR while training for my first marathon (I rarely race that distance) You can't effectively race the distance on a Higdon type schedule. One or two 11 or 12 mile long runs is not far enough to run your…

Running at night in the winter is pretty sucky, I'd stick with half.
-
Half marathons for sure! 5K = not my preferred brand of pain, no margin for error (one bad split and you're toast) 10K = almost all the pain of a 5K, but twice the distance... half marathon = yes please! marathon = having run 26 of them, I'm still trying figure out if I like them (I'm thinking not so much)
-
My $.02 - just jump into a regular marathon training plan (like Higdon), but leave your long run where it is right now. You can either get ahead on your long runs or start the program a couple weeks in (so perhaps jump right to week 5 of the program instead of week 1).

Listen to this young lady, she knows her running, very experienced and very fast!
-
1) more miles 2) more miles 3) more miles speedwork won't get you very far if you lack aerobic fitness - maybe some fartleks here and there
-
Good luck, as I often do, I'll offer my top three tips for race day (free of charge): 1) don't go out too fast 2) don't go out too fast 3) don't go out too fast Have fun!

Nice plan! Reset and rebuild that aerobic fitness. Let us know how it goes.
-
I'm thinking you should try to cut them out of your shorter runs first. I bet you can go much further than you think once you change your mindset about it.
-
My $.02 - it sounds like you lack aerobic fitness, perhaps you should try cutting out the walk breaks entirely. All the speedwork in the world will only get you so far without additional aerobic fitness. As per Carson wise words, this is built by logging lots of miles (most of them easy). You could try adding some fartleks…

There's also the So Cal Half - decent race. Only problem is the SRLA kids race here too (nice program where kids are training for the LA marathon, but the kids sprint and stop and cut all over the course - they lack the race etiquette of more experienced runners). http://schalfmarathon.com/

I heard soccer players can end running 5-6 miles in a 90 minute game (not sure how long they play as kids). 6.5 miles isn't that big a stretch and that pace isn't anything close to what it take to win half marathons (or relays) in my area. So bottom line, it's good for a non-runner but neither spectacular nor unbelievable.

How about Surf City in early February? The race is a little expensive, but they put on a really nice event.
-
My biggest concern is not having to make any unwanted porta-potty stops during my races (has never happened in 90+ races - knock on wood). So I avoid eating too many veggies the day before (no giant salads) - no dried fruit or bran muffins - you get the picture. I just keep it simple, cheese pizza, plain bagels, prretzels,…

Carson is wise...

My $.02: 15 to 20 is a BIG jump if you've never gone past 15 before. I think I'd be ready to shut it down at 17 or 18 this weekend (unless you're feeling great) - and try for a 20 the following weekend.
-
You sound undertrained, but the question is how much did your PF slow you down. What have your long run and weekly mileage looked like? In a normal training cycle you'd be almost done and ready to taper. Don't be in a hurry to taper down while undertrained. There's no such thing as critical last minute training, it is a…
-
I know you can do it!
-
My $.02 - that long run schedule is bare bones with only one 20 miler. I'd try to tweak that plan to get another 20 and then a two week taper instead of three. Not sure what your weekday runs look like. Also, if you're putting in big miles on the bike, then that seems to help the cause. Splitting long run is better than…

Straight up, I would have died if I tried to run another marathon 8 days after my first. You have NO idea how trashed that first marathon will leave you (even if you do a great job with your training). Most people would be hard pressed to run an 8 - 10 miler one week later. I'm with Carson on this one.
-
Good luck! I'm a half marathon guy at heart, 5Ks are just an occasional necessary evil. I would suggest that the WAVA (age grading) tables are a more reliable way to check your progress than age group placement (which is a function of who shows up that day). http://pinebeltpacers.org/AgeGrade/AgeGrade.htm
