From couch to marathon in 3 days!
Why spend months and months training when you can just go out and do it cold? Day one: walk a mile, run for 4 minutes, walk a mile Day two: carb load, hydrate and taper for the big race Day three: "run" marathon! if you want to qualify for Boston (or better yet the Olympic Trials) then run for 10 minutes on day two...…

Spot reducing before or after juice cleanse?
Also, what brand of sauna suit works best? I see all the MMA guys wearing them, so they MUST be good for long term weight loss... Also, I rode a lifecycle for 3 minutes at the gym this morning, how do I sign up for Le Tour de France?

The thread where people give really bad running advice!
After you finish your first 5K, sign up for a marathon (or two) in the next month. Get some nice cotton socks...

you don't need to carb load for a 5k & other running wisdom
- if you run on the streets, always run facing traffic so you can see cars coming at you (I see way too many people running with their backs to traffic, wearing black while listening to music...) - your tech shirts will stink after you run in them, there is nothing you can do about it (I leave mine out in the garage until…

Fartleks - speedwork 101 for new runners
Fartlek is Swedish for speed play. Quite simply it is a great way for new runners to start incorporating speedwork into their training. The best part about fartleks is that they are totally free form. Once you are warmed up and running along at an easy pace, it might look something like this: run full blast to the stop…

belated milestone: 20,000+ miles of running!
Earlier in the summer I crossed 20,000 miles of running. It took 11 years, so that's an average of 1,800 miles per year. The first few years were lower than that, the last 5+ years have been ~ 2,400 mile or so. Even better 99.9% of my running has been outside. Less than 10 total miles logged on the dreadmill (as required…

HIIT warning
We all know the benefits of HIIT and the awesome afterburn. But there is a dark and dangerous side to HIIT. My friend's neighbor's cousin's workout partner did HIIT for four days in a row and he burned so many calories he actually disappeared! All that was left was a pile teeth, gold chains and workout gear. You've been…

Favorite running myths
You'll ruin your knees! Your uterus will fall out if you don't stop that this instance. You can't run two days in row without your knees exploding into fiery balls of light...

Marathon recovery
What do you do? I like to get out and start running ASAP. I basically do my taper in reverse. For a Sunday race I usually take one rest day, then take a walk on Tuesday and take an easy jog on Wednesday. That first run hurts (sore muscles) every step of the way, but I always feel so much better once I'm done. I keep…

Is HIIT the most misused term on these boards?
All HIIT workouts are intervals, but NOT all interval workouts are HIIT. I'm not even a HIIT guy. I'm a distance runner, generally focused on marathon & half marathon training. I usually do intervals once a week (mile or half mile repeats). 7 x 1/2 mile repeats (at 5k pace) with 90 second jogs in between is a great workout…

Just hit 2,400 miles of running for the year!
After spending all of 2010 and some 2009 battling injuries and running slow, I'm very happy to be running well right now.

Race Report: Holiday Half Marathon – Pomona, CA
I never know where to put these things, so this seems like as good a place as any. Executive summary: hilly, chilly and fun! This is fairly new race (third year I think?) put on by the good folks who own the Long Beach Marathon. About 9 months ago there was a discount code for a $30 entry to the race. At that price point,…
