  • I'm not hungry after my run but I tend to try and have a small amount of fuel within 20min of finishing, it can be a banana, 10g of pine nuts, a glass of milk, I had read a few articles a while ago that was looking at the increased recovery if fod is eaten within 20min of finishing (our guys that do obstacle runs like…
  • Could just be what you're used to, I'm the opposite, I run better later in the day and I believe it's because of the amount of fuel I've taken on throughout the day. Could also be to do with temperature and humidity later in the day, I sometimes struggle if it humid and can't breath properly. You would probably need to…
  • I agree it's probably more like strength training and not really burning a whole lot of calories, it's working the muscle but not really increasing the heart rate (yes I know squats, dead-lifts etc all increase the heart rate but it increases for 15 reps and then recovers so never really a huge increase in heart rate,…
  • You really won't want to hear this, but you probably need to gain weight in the form of muscle to help with you're stomach and thighs, go to the Gaining Weight forum and check out what the guy's and girl's there that have 6-packs eat, they sometimes do struggle to hit their calories because they're eating in excess of 4000…
  • If you've been sick and not eating then the gain will be temporary water weight and glycogen levels replenishing, it's only 1 week and weight loss is rarely linear, it will fluctuate, stick with what you're doing, I would only start to look at calorie levels and diet if the weight wasn't moving over a month later.
  • second this as well, I've been through marathon training and currently in my taper, wasn't happy with one of my runs the other week and as my trainer pointed out in my PT session, not every run can be a PB, 27min for a 5k is really good, my 5k time is longer but I struggle with the first 4miles of a run (hence the trying a…
  • It's probably your mind rather than your body, sometimes it's just about gritting your teeth and getting on with it, I have actually had arguements with myself on a run about keeping going (fortunately I'm in the forest and it's only the dog that can hear me), keep going, Hal Higdon also supports the training for walking…
  • Are you eating enough, the fast weight loss in the first few weeks could have been water/glycogen and now your body is storing fat because it doesn't have sufficient glycogen levels to be able to fuel the muscles properly?? Have you tried increasing you calories by a couple of hundred for a couple of weeks (I would expect…
  • How many calories are you eating?? What are you macros, are you eating a protein source after exercise to help hunger, are you eating carbs to fuel beforehand?? Open your diary so people can see what you're eating and they may be able to make suggestions for tweaking it. I'm overweight, run 4 times a week, weights once a…
  • How many calories are you aiming for?? Have you gone with the default 1200 calories because you've said you want to lose 2lbs a week?? Open your diary so we can see what you're eating and tell us what your calorie goal is.
  • What about a hand bike, can still help you increase your heart rate towards a cardio limit?? Or what about Yoga (not sure if this would work with your knee pain but might be worth talking to a yoga centre about it), it's not the cardio workout that running etc would give you, but it does get some very good calorie burning…
  • This, are you eating enough to fuel the strength and cardio?? I run 4 times a week (marathon training so my long ru has gone up as far as 20miles) and normally do weights twice a week, there's only 1 day where my running and weights are on the same day and I do the running first, then the weights. One of my weights…
  • Scottish person here, our Spartan Sprint wasn't very good, they had a wall as the first obstacle, so it took us 20min of queuing to get to the first obstacle (after which it did ease considerably), ours is only a 5k, there's only 1 Spartan Beast in the UK and it's about 8hrs drive away so never done it. Tough Mudder…
  • As above, what are your goals?? What are you actually doing on your strength training days, how long are you on the elliptical, what setting do you have it at??
  • muscles will get used to it, as long as you can tell the difference between 'this hurts' and 'I'm hurt' if it's 'this hurts' because you haven't exercised in a few years it's time to suck up the pain and get on with it, if you've injured yourself then you need to rest to recover from the injury. Why not do some changes to…
  • Thanks All It's more a time commitment for me, not sure if I have the time to commit to the training, have my first marathon on Sunday so going to see how my ankle reacts to that before going forward. I have found a 33 mile one that's a hours drive from me in November, it's a trail run and an out and back so they provide a…
  • Just a thought, but homeopathic remedies can really help with the recovery of sprained ankles arnica gel (helps proof the bruising fasters), can use arnica pillules as well if it's really swollen rhus tox pillules helps with the ligaments etc that have been strained ruta grav pillules if the rhus tox isn't having the…
  • I would need an oxygen mask and someone to rescuitate me!!!
  • If it ain't hurtin, it's ain't workin. If the bar ain't bending, you're just pretending. Sweat is just fat crying Pain is weakness leaving the body The only race pace is suicide pace, and today seems like a good day to die (I will be chanting this one on Sunday)
  • You can get belts that you can put your water bottle in and they tend to have loops for gels as well. I have stashed water before when I'm running the trails. Check out High5 gels, they're actually quite palatable and made with fruit juice (I'm not vegan so I don't know what you can and can't have), remember when you start…
  • Another one for getting fitted in a Running store, I wear Brooks Vapour 11 for road running and Saloman Pro 3d Ultra 2 GTX for trail running (not a treadmill fan). Get fitted and watch the video they take in slow motion, my running store slow it right down and point out any bits where the achilles is bending or where I was…
  • Weeds touching my feet would freak me out (I'l stick to running and the occassional dip in a nice heated pool)!!!
  • Maybe search for Iron Man competitions as well as they have over a 2mile open water swim involved in them?? A couple of the websites I use for running, support triathlons as well so have wet-suits etc (if you're in the UK one of them also has a swim lab for you to try out the suits) www.wiggle.co.uk www.ratrace.com (this…
  • Nerves are normal, think you're just over thinking it a bit too much (the more you do of them the less you'll do this), I wouldn't worry about fuelling yourself for a 5k (as you've said, even at a walk you only took 53min to do it), carb load etc isn't necessary for 5k's (or even 10/15k's) if you're somewhere hot, hydrate…
  • I'm running a marathon alone, go for a big race (race for life etc), there's always a good atmosphere and everyone talks to each other throughout the race, go for it:)
  • I love my weights sessions and whilst the majority of my training currently is cardio (doing a marathon next Sunday) I also do weight as well to help with the legs muscles, once I have the techniques sorted I can actually lift quite heavy (up to 80kg on the dead-lift and 75kg on the squat, just learning the Olympic clean…
  • Maybe post this in the Gaining Weight section of the forums, that forum has a lot of people who are or are looking to gain lean muscle and you'll probably get a better response from a nutritional point of view (you'll run into the first world problems of not wanting to eat 4000calories (this is extreme and are the guys…
  • Agree with people regarding the 'toxic 20', I really dislike running for the first 3miles (I have given up doing 5k's as it takes me that long to warm up and hit a stride). I also don't like the treadmill, my favourite is heading up the forest with the dog, once I get over that initial 3miles and start to hit my stride I…
  • Fruit is good for you, but like everything else, you have to keep it within your calorie goal, it's good for you, but if you're eating 15 bananas a day and exceeding your calorie goal then at this point it isn't good for you. Very few foods are bad for you, it's all about portion size and keeping within the calorie goal…
  • I remember the morning after my first ever bootcamp, I was in agony (walking down the stairs backwards because I couldn't manage them any other way, having to use the disabled toilet for about a week, got stuck in the bath that night took 40min to get out of the bath etc), I swore I wasn't going back for a week to allow my…
