Really? For some reason that surprises me, but that might just be because I've never had to deal with that particular kind of attitude first hand. I've never been a smoker and I never will be but I'm a big advocate of allowing people to do what they want. I mean, they'll eventually reap what they sow.
-
I meant in this thread, sorry. Also I don't know the going rate of cigarettes or how it's changed because I'm not a smoker and have never been :)
-
I'm laughing at this entire thread. I don't care if people are obese. I also don't care if they're smokers or drinkers. I don't see people complaining about lifelong smokers having higher rates of cancer and "costing us tax dollars", yet people are so willing to harp on the obese for having heart problems etc. Live and let…

Well I mean I'm very weak as in I don't have very much strength built up over the years (never had to actually work those muscles.) I don't mean I feel weak/tired afterwards.

Thanks for the links guys, specifically this one: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/595473-why-the-scale-goes-up-with-a-new-workout-program-must-read Very good reads. I am absorbing all of this information for sure. This post explains the water retention a little better and I think that is probably more likely what's…

Interesting read! Thank you.

Can you provide some sort of citation that refutes the science in my link in the first post? Sorry to be skeptical, and I know retaining water is a possibility, but yeah.

Overweight newbie, as I explained fully in my first post?

I ended up getting some new running shoes today. I went to the store "Gazelle Sports" in Kalamazoo, MI (highly recommended if you're around that area-- the salesperson was really great!) The shoes I got were marked down from $120 to $90. Decided on these after trying on about 10 different pairs and having someone help me…

Still a couple of uses on this one

I don't log anything that I don't specifically set out to do as exercise. That means all the extra walking, etc doesn't get logged unless I went to the gym and got on the treadmill to walk.

Obvious troll is obvious. Not to mention his picture looks strangely like a stock image.

I'm going to print that out in big letters and post it somewhere where I can see it to keep myself motivated. Thank you! :)

Duck footed (I think that's the term for it?) I brought it up with my doctor and she said that she did notice that my walking was unusual. My doctor wanted me to get X-rays to see if it had anything to do with my hips or not but they wanted $300 up front and, once again, poor uninsured college student living in USA = no…

The "burn" is due to lactic acid. If you want the sciencey explanation, check out Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactic_acid If you want the layman's terms, Livestrong has an article about it: http://www.livestrong.com/article/446321-why-do-you-get-a-burning-sensation-in-your-muscles-during-strenuous-exercise/

RunBrew: Unfortunately I do have an unnatural stride that has been pointed out to me by my doctor. That is part of the reason that I figured going to get fitted would be more beneficial than trying to figure it out myself (and of course buying the shoes at the store-- I also think it's kind of disingenuous to get fitted…
-
Thanks guys! I have a local running store that I called that said they do fitting for running shoes. You're very right when you say that it's less expensive now to get proper shoes than to injure myself later on. I'm pretty sure I have an unusual gait anyway and it would be nice to have shoes that actually properly fit me…

The problem is you're singling out homosexual advances and your discomfort of them in specific, and then talk about political correctness. If you would have said that you were uncomfortable with all unwanted advances no one here would have read homophobia between the lines. Us lesbians are not mind readers. If we hit on…

Not sure this is a good thing to say to someone who is afraid they're being judged/watched at the gym.

MFP always overestimates burns. Honestly I wouldn't even put things like cleaning in (or anything that wasn't specifically exercise) but that's just me personally.
-
Great I'll just tell my therapist that someone on MFP has all the answers. :) OP and anyone else who is scared: no one is watching you. Everyone is so focused on their own workout that I doubt they even notice you're there. Realizing that no one in the world cares about how silly you look is pretty liberating.

Thanks chris. Here's my invite code. AMBERB6TP

Same. Good job on demanding another doctor. I'm glad they're finally taking you seriously.
-
Uh. This is still calories in/calories out. If you have a "damaged metabolism" and still eat less than your (lower than usual) TDEE, you're still going to lose weight.
-
You haven't provided one actual scientific study. You gave a bunch of links to editorials. Also, since you're in the middle of a debate and you're trying to prove your point, it IS your job to actually provide evidence of your (outlandish) claims.
-
She was being sarcastic :)

MFP overestimates burns, yes. 1474 food MINUS the exercise (647) = 827. Although you're actually consuming 1474 calories, MFP is set up so that you eat back your exercise calories. It gave you a bonus of 647 to eat back today. If you ate another 647 calories, your net would go back up to 1474. Be careful about eating back…

No one is claiming that estimated TDEE/BMR/etc are 100% correct all of the time. That's why it's called an estimation.
