It is very very hard to do. I tend to change things during the course of the year. Right now I am concentrating on lifting heavy but still maintaining my running fitness base. In the past I have tried to maintain a moderate/heavy weight regimen during the middle of marathon training and failed miserably - I massively…

Resistance bands are a great option for your circumstances. They do work well, they are inexpensive, they take up very little space, you can travel with them and they can be used in an absolute ton of neat and fun ways to give you a great work out. And I have to admit, unless you are very good at that type of stuff I'd be…

A TENS unit will not do it. Period. There is a form of electrical stimulation that has been shown to work in pathological situations such as muscle wasting (from disease or immobilization, etc) but it does not increase muscle mass in healthy tissue.

It really does depend on the time of year. Right now I am doing 3 days lifting and 2-3 days of running. Fall and early Winter is Marathon season for me so in late summer I start gearing up more for cardio. I traditionally did one marathon a year in early January (which serves as a great way to keep up exercise during other…

There is something to be said about good ol' genetics too. Exercise and diet helps and long distance running is certainly going to help but some people just have certain genetic predispositions. I love to run and I run 1-2 marathons a year and a host of other races and do relatively little weight lifting. My body resembles…

I have done Disney Marathon weekend for 4 years in a row now and already signed up for my 5th. They really do a good job.

My favorite to run is the half, BUT nothing beats the euphoria I get when crossing the finish line after a full.

Anybody who judges you for running is just jealous. I can guarantee you that 95% of the runners out there will be very supportive and encouraging (and the other 5% isn't worth talking about). Running takes a lot of hard work and patience and persistence. It will get better but it won't get better overnight. But as you…

I really really like the GNC Triple Strength Fish Oil. I have an minor allergy to fish that causes me to have a migraine headache when I eat too much of it. When I have tried fish oils in the past they always triggered a migraine so I thought that I would not be able to ever take in fish oil (although as mentioned earlier…

I am a Chiropractor - the impact on the spine stuff is wrong to the point of being backwards. Running will increase joint mobility in the spine, it will strengthen the muscles that support your spine and it will increase the bone density of your spine. The delaying women stuff has more to do with extreme diets combined…

To my knowledge the real difference between refined and unrefined (or less refined) is the fiber content, which is significantly greater in the unrefined, which does make a significant difference due to blood sugar regulation. If you have someone who is eating a ton of sugary foods, with no regards to calorie intake then…

Those are phenomenal results. Be proud of yourself.

For Fantasy give Michael Sullivan's 'The Riyria Revelations' - they are fairly recent works that are a really fun read. They are light fantasy and a nice change of pace from the Epic Fantasy that is all the rage right now (not that there is anything wrong with Epic fantasy). These are just some easy to read, fun books that…

Start weight training now. You cannot 'solidify your fat'.

I have found them to be only good for general trends. I use calipers to get a more accurate measure, the scale is always way off.

As a former anorexic, your Protein intake is critical in helping you regain the muscle mass that you lost. You don't have to go crazy and have a super, super high protein intake but I would strongly, strongly recommend that you reach the level recommended on the myfitness pal calculator, i.e. 30% As far as getting good…

Vote number 2 for the Thorlos Experia - best running socks I have ever used.

When you lose weight you lose both muscle and fat. The fat is good the muscle is bad. The main goal of exercising is to prevent the muscle loss and maximize the fat loss. So for example you have 2 people who weigh 200 lbs. They both have a bodyfat percentage of 25%. So that means that they have 50 pounds of fat and 150…

I have done a lot of running in the past 5 years (5 marathons and 4 half marathons). The problem with training for a long distance run is that the training makes you very very hungry. I have found that when training for a marathon it is almost impossible to lose weight (I always gain 5 lbs) but when training for a half it…
