When I started MFP, I was having 3-5 beers a night during the week, and 4-7 a night at the weekend. I quickly noticed that the extra calories from beer was going to make it nearly impossible to lose any weight, so I cut back to 1-3 a day. I'm pretty happy with my rate of weight loss, and quite sure I might not be losing…

I'll contradict prevailing wisdom and assert that, yes, you can gain lean muscle mass at the same time you lose fat while maintaining a significant calorie deficit. I started out on MFP to get rid of some useless body fat after being diagnosed with (very!) high blood pressure. I started at 171 lbs and opted for a 2lb/week…

Not really a regret, but maybe the Walkers Prawn Cocktail crisps weren't the most prudent choice for a snack. Of course, it's logged.

I have/had chronic lower back pain, but I noticed that it improved massively when I started walking on a daily basis. I noticed that the muscles on either side of my spine in the lower back, which I've since learned are called the multifidus, had become stronger. I presume this is because they were getting some actual use…

Those fries look better than those onion rings. now, these, on the other hand, cannot be beat!

Chicken - a freaking amazing source of low-calorie protein Salmon, especially sushi - it's ridiculously tasty and just as healthy Beans - very high in carbs :-\ Glutinous rice - 100% carbs. I can barely fit it into my diet. Nuts, especially macadamia - perfect way to get up to my daily fat intake Oat bran - really good…

It sounds like it works the same way that soluble fiber works. Psyllium fiber (metamucil, et al.) is likely as effective, if not more so. From webmd: "Possibly Ineffective for: Weight loss. Taking garcinia fruit rind extract doesn't seem to decrease weight, fat breakdown, or energy expenditure in overweight people. There…

Get to around 11-13% body fat. I'm somewhere between 16-18% based on skinfold measurements. I don't expect that will be all too difficult to achieve, but learning to maintain will be the trick. I really want to be able to run sometime in the next year. Based on my previous attempt, which left me unable to walk due to an…

I had the same issue: scale showing 2-3 lbs difference within hours. Suspecting this was a scale error, I tested the scale by measuring my weight and then measuring my weight with a 1 lb weight in my hand. Sometimes it wouldn't show the extra weight and other times it would show nearly a 2 lb difference; it never got close…

40c/40f/20p is a really good macro ratio. Diets with that macro distribution are called low glycemic or mediterranean. Harvard did a study and found this to be the best diet in their study. http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2012/06/when-a-calorie-is-not-just-a-calorie/ Additionally, it's quite easy to hit the targets…

That sounds tasty! Another one that is way too good to be healthy is Atlanta Fresh Vanilla 2% Greek Yogurt. I'm not sure if it'll be available outside the southeast, but my local Whole Foods has it. It really is like icing...or maybe more like silky smooth creme brulee filling. Add some fresh berries and get ready for a…

1/2 cup water 1 medium/large apple 2 cups spinach 1 banana handful blueberries handful raspberries ~250 cals. ~12g fiber. for ~50 fewer calories, add another cup of spinach, double the berries and skip the banana.

I don't think I'll be able to make the final 5 miles, unless my ankle/achilles tendon miraculously starts to feel better than it has for the past week. I foolishly thought I could handle the C25K since walking was so easy...my body disagreed vehemently. Weight loss/management is quite difficult when one can't exercise!

Ending up in the emergency room in hypertensive crisis after visiting an urgent care center because I'd been feeling run down for the past few months and not getting any better. My BP was 212/143 (IIRC). I'm not sure if it was due to chronic stress at work, having not slept much (or well!) in the past four months, terrible…

I hope not. I expect to eventually establish healthy eating _habits_. I do have 43 years of eating habits to unlearn, so I do not expect this to happen overnight. Maybe in a few months I'll have enough positive eating experience that I can stop weighing my food and counting calories.

There's an awesome pizza place called Bella Mia in Cary that makes a proper neopolitan style pie in a brick oven. Their pie would be in the top 10 in NYC...maybe in the top half of that list. It's really outstanding, and I say that as someone whose favorite pie is the margherita from Grimaldi's on Clinton St. Oh, and their…

Cookout tray with burger, two corndogs and a cheerwine float! Most food you can get for $5.37, especially at 3am. On the topic of awesome NC food, any of you within a couple of hours of Durham, really should make your way to Backyard BBQ on Hwy 55...and take a cheat day. I highly recommend the baked beans and mac & cheese…
