  • I lost about 30lbs using mfp about seven years ago... but I'm back at it as I've slowly gained it all back! I'm vegan, and also gluten-free (not gf by choice). Hmm I wrote s big post but somehow the rest was deleted. Feel free to add me, my diary is open.
  • Ah well, rain does not make for good camping. I spent the last night of my trip in a tiny tent for 12 hours, praying I didn't float away in the torrential rains! Luckily, the rest of the trip had perfect weather. I hope next weekend works for you!
  • Sad I will be out of the country for Halloween this year :( Last year I went as a paper doll- totally awesome costume! I made different outfits out of poster board, and used velcro to stick them to me (I was wearing black leggins and a black t shirt with velcro patches stuck on). In the middle of the party I could change…
  • No problem, I was pretty excited to see a post asking about exactly what I had just spent a week doing! If you're biking all day, then you probably wont have to worry about eating too much food-- more like eating enough! The dried fruit and nuts are a great high-calorie snack. I spent most of my camping trip kayaking, and…
  • You are in luck, I just returned from a week of gluten-free vegan camping! I used a camp stove, a camp fire, and a cooler for my food storage and cooking. You don't mention if you will be using a cooler or not, but you probably should so you can keep some produce, non-dairy milk, etc. Here is a run down of the meals I had:…
  • The D-Earth used in pool filters is different than the food grade kind. The food grade kind is safe to eat. I have taken it before for extended periods of time and had zero negative side effects. I mix about a tablespoon of it into a smoothie or with some non-dairy milk, or peanut butter. I also mix about a teaspoon into…
  • I haven't gone out to eat in the Financial District yet, but there are a lot of interesting historical taverns in the area. There is one really neat street called Coenties Street that is all cobblestones and is closed to traffic. It is lined with restaurants with outside seating. I have no idea if there are any good food…
  • I happen to live in NYC! What area are you going to? Though in reality NYC isn't very big geography wise, if you are going to be in Queens you probably don't want to trek to lower Manhattan or something just for a restaurant! Assuming you will be in the Manhattan area, here are some places I like to go: Lula's Sweet…
  • There are a few vegetarian/vegan groups here on MFP. I suggest you join one and ask any questions you may have. I am a member of Happy Herbivores and Team Vegan. We welcome new people !
  • Since making the full switch to vegan, I can taste flavors much more intensely now. Vegetables and grains, especially. I am totally happy to eat a dish that contains just quinoa, some steamed vegetables, and just a dash of some standard spices (oregano, pepper, etc.). No need to add cheese or oils or dressings, the pure…
  • When you don't feel good about yourself, no amount of pretty clothes or makeup will change that. When you start to love yourself, just feeling happy makes you more beautiful! And feeling happy makes you want to take care of yourself even more-- it is a great cycle! Keep it up!

  • Wear whatever you like. As long as you aren't going to be in a place where certain dress restrictions apply (ex. work), use your own judgement. If you feel comfortable in it, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Just to put this in perspective, where I live (NYC) it is legal for a woman to be topless anywhere a man can be…
  • I geocache here in NYC, so it is mostly paved roads. I spend a lot of time caching in central park as well, but nothing there is too strenuous. I always have a backpack with me, carrying 10-15 lbs (lots of good snacks, water, book for the subway, gear for the pool, etc.), so I usually log it as " walking carry a 15 lb…
  • These sounds so good! I want to make them, perhaps with some soy raita? I lived in India for six months, and back then I was just vegetarian, not gluten free vegan-- and I practically lived on raita (and naan, oh god the naan...)! I am also a HUGE sweet potato fan, so yea!
  • I can't eat tempeh anymore because there is usually sneaky gluten in it, but I think I used to like chopping it up really small and throwing it in pasta sauce while it was cooking. Then I would add broccoli, onions, and garlic to the sauce and have it over pasta. I also liked to cook it in a pan with soy sauce, but I see…

  • I just made this delishes Sweet Potato Hash, from food.com. It is really, really good! A great source of iron! http://www.food.com/recipe/sweet-potato-hash-472487
  • I started swimming about a month ago, once my semester ended and I had time to actually use the pool at school. I go about 3 times a week (only open four days a week), for about an hour. I haven't lost much as all, about 5 lbs in the past 2.5 months, and most of that before started swimming. However, I have noticed my…
  • My parent's keep a few hens as pets, and once when I was visiting they cracked an egg only to find a tiny chicken fetus in it.... yet they don't have any roosters (males)!!! Nor are there any other chickens/hens/roosters in the neighborhood. We all know that it takes two to tango, so could it have been a clone chicken?!?…
  • Gazpacho! Just put a ton of veggies (cucumbers, tomatoes, garlic, onions, peppers, etc) in the blender, season with cilantro, cumin, paprika. Chill, and then eat with a toasted tortilla. I think some people put sour cream on top, but I never have. Corn on the cob done in the microwave is also nice, you don't have to turn…
  • Hello, I just started geocaching and I love it! I live in NYC so there are TONS of caches to be found. So far I have only found 8 or so, and have five caches that I haven't been able to locate. I don't have a GPS, just a smart phone, and it really isn't very accurate in the city! I have found it works pretty well in less…
  • My current obsessions/ interests are: Swimming Knitting Fiber arts Animals Museums Origami Geocaching Traveling Learning about other cultures (currently getting my MA in cultural anthropology) Reading, especially British murder mysteries and fiction by post-colonial feminist Indian authors
  • I have a gluten intolerance and a diary intolerance, won't kill me to eat them but I do get sick for days! Gluten will make my face and abdomen swell up, give me horrible stomach and intestinal pain, and will completely mess up my digestive system for about four days. Dairy does the same thing, minus the swelling, and…
  • I am a teaching artist / museum educator, teaching kids at two different museums.
  • I like gluten free goddess, and I also like http://xgfx.org/-- but it looks like they haven't been very active lately.
  • I don't have any tattoos, mostly because I don't think there is any image I like enough to make it a permanent part of my body. However, this past year I had a nasty run-in with a Portuguese Man of War (jellyfish) that has left me with scars on my legs. Most of them are lines made of little white polka-dots where the…
  • My friend has a french bulldog named "Batman the Dog the Movie"! She is super ridiculous and snorts a lot, so he also calls her "pig". She is so cute that I will visit just to play with her :) My own pets have cool names but they aren't super weird or anything. My cats are Mona and Odin, and at my parent's place we have…
  • Wow, you look so healthy and beautiful! I am always amazed by and a bit jealous of tall women :)
  • I always ask the ingredients in a veggie burger for this very reason-- plus I can't eat gluten, either (almost all faux-meat products have wheat in them). I am lucky to have found two different places in my neighborhood that make their own veggie burgers that are not only vegan, but also gluten-free. I just ask for them on…
  • Sometimes I make a yummy carrot soup. I just make a regular vegetable soup with a ton of carrots, and then blend it all with a blender. Then I add some soy milk (you can use regular milk) to make it kind of creamy. Back when I ate gluten, I would eat it with home made bread! So good!

  • I like to take half an avocado and put it between two rice cakes, with a little lemon pepper seasoning. Makes a nice, creamy "sandwich" (I can't eat gluten or dairy either).
