Those are different goals, and doing all 3 at once is difficult. To build muscle - eat at or slightly above your maintenance calories, toward the high end of the healthy protein % range, and repeatedly lift / set down heavy things (which should get progressively heavier as lower weights become easy to lift. To lose fat -…

Here's a table which explains the healthy ranges for macronutrients, from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/88/1/1/T1.expansion.html carbs, 45 - 65% of calories (4 cal per gram) fat, 20 - 35% of calories (9 cal per gram) protein, 10 - 35% of calories (4 cal per gram) For your…

If you're 4'8", then 800 cal/day is reasonable. Otherwise, no. You're probably eating more than you think. Weigh &/or measure your foods, until you have a good eye for estimating. Record everything. Make your diary private, but you have to be honest with yourself & have good data. Include some healthy fats (nuts, avocado,…

That's a really ambitious goal (lose 10% body fat in 4 months). To build muscle, lift weights & have your protein intake toward the higher end of the healthy range. To burn fat, cardio, especially if you can manage high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and eat slightly under your maintenance calorie goal.…

I agree about having smaller goals so you get rewarded more frequently. Even with your starting weight, it's going to take a while to hit those 25lb goals. How about 10 lb? And as you get closer to a healthy weight reward 5 lb losses. New earphones Cute socks Bubble bath (& give yourself permission to soak!) Shower gel…

Also, read these, esp. sexypants & the ones about logging accurately. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1080242/a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10012907/logging-accuracy-consistency-and-youre-probably-eating-more-than-you-think…

Read this. Then read it again. Bookmark it so you can use it to explain to other newbies what "starvation mode"is and is not. What you're thinking it is, it's not. http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/ The body needs energy (calories) to run. It prefers to use glucose (blood sugar, easily-available carbs), then…

Binge eating is not healthy, from a biological or mental perspective. Nor does it mean people are eating less. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23244741 Double trouble: restrained eaters do not eat less and feel worse "high levels of dietary restraint do not appear to reflect actual caloric restraint, it has been found…

BTW, get this "dieting" idea out of your head. Diets are temporary. Once you go off the diet & go back to eating the way you did before, you'll go back to the weight you were before. You need to make sustainable changes to your life - what & how much you eat, & how much you move. Start logging everything (EVERYTHING!) you…

Welcome aboard. Here are some helpful threads / posts. Also, congrat's on the wedding. With a short time remaining, it would be best to focus on weights, with some cardio, as that would produce visible changes in the shortest time. Don't go overboard & aim for 2 lb a week if all you want is to lose 20 lb. Also consider that you might need the dress altered. Don't stress…

Not for reducing fat, which can only be done by a calorie deficit. (Don't waste your money.) But I usually take a multivitamin as insurance, 'cause sometimes I don't eat as well as I should. And I take vitamin D & calcium as prevention against weak bones.

If your doctor has told you you have a medical condition that requires a special restrictive diet, follow those instructions. But as long as you're eating less than you burn, you'll lose weight. Easier to take in less than to burn off more. Have a balanced diet for best health. For best practices on recommended macros,…

1 - For my back to stop hurting, & my lung infection to clear up, so all that's holding me back from exercise is my mind. 2 - A real job, full time, with decent pay & health care. (So I can stop worrying about if I can pay bills.) Bonus points if it's something that uses my education & experience, challenges me, and/or…

What are you "detoxing" from? What chemicals or "toxins", exactly? How does this tea remove them, when your body's natural defenses haven't? (Why aren't the rest of us sick or dead?) If all you want is to poop more: drink plenty of water, eat insoluble fiber, exercise. There's no reason to clear out your intestines "a few…

I'd say you've already started. You've decided to take action, you have a goal (though it probably needs some refinement, you do have an idea), you're getting information & support. Check with your doctor, see if there are any health concerns other than simply being heavy. Maybe s/he can refer you to a dietician so you can…

Yes, it's that simple, but it's not easy. You've had a long time of unhealthy eating & action, so it will take a while to turn things around. Your body needs to adjust, and most importantly you need to figure out why you've been doing this to yourself. That might take seeing a counselor for a while. Good news is that it's…

BTDT. Do small things that will help you feel better &/or accomplish something quickly. Then cross them off your list & be happy that your list is shorter. Build up successes, build up willpower. Drink a glass of water. Pee. (Wash your hands.) Have something simple & nutritious to eat - maybe an apple with peanut butter &…

For the last few days, I'm thinking that coughing should count as an abdominal workout. :( Seriously, though, set your account to sedentary & aim for those calories. Exercise is for health. Don't count on it for weight loss. (Neither my dietician nor my weight doc - an endocrinologist specializing in weight issues - had…

This isn't an either/or choice. Do both - get the appetite under immediate control AND learn good long-term eating habits. And no, my out-of-control appetite did not go back out of control as I stopped using phentermine.

It's not a "weight loss" drug, it's an appetite suppressant. It's for short-term use (a few months) by very overweight people, or by somewhat overweight people with other health complications (so the benefits of the help in losing weight outweigh the risks from the potential side effects of the medicine). . If your major…

Why are you "on a diet"? A diet is temporary. Once you stop "dieting", you'll go back to how you used to eat & that's what got you into the shape you're in that you don't like which led you to want to eat less, right? . So make changes you can sustain, things that are realistic long-term. If you don't want to give up…

Welcome aboard. You're likely to find more support for body modification in one of the groups than on the general fora. You can browse or search them here: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/groups I hope that you both find through this 6-month waiting period that you're able to learn healthy eating & exercise…

Losing weight is a matter of burning more than you eat. If you're fasting for religious reasons, or a medical test, then it's necessary. But as a weight loss method, it's counterproductive. It does not teach you healthy eating behaviours, things that you can continue the rest of your life. Actually, extreme eating patterns…
