  • I recently ran a half marathon 5 minutes worse than my previous worse time and 12 minutes worse than my PR. I also had struggled with training due to injury. 2 weeks out I had planned on skipping the race for that reason and then decided I could at least walk/run if necessary. Up until the day before I wasn't sold on…
  • Every person is different, but I will second the comment above about Mizunos not lasting as long. While I actually do love the Mizuno Wave Riders, I don't feel I get the same mileage out of them that I have with the Brooks Ravenna in the past.
  • @christyprunner I couldn't agree more. That is so my life right now. I probably haven't strung more than one day together since July. That was leading up to the 4th, so no worries I went backwards that weekend. There are moments I'm so disgusted with myself, but I'm not doing anything to change. I don't think the saying…
  • I have also wondered if my weight could be slowing me down. When I started this journey nearly 3 years ago it was with the idea of getting down to 145. I'm 5'11 and at my low point I was 159, currently sitting at 170. Weight Watchers tells me that a healthy weight is anywhere between 143 - 179. The longer I'm on this…
  • When I'm not training it seems to be a lot easier to balance. If I only end up with 25-30 miles it doesn't bother me. I think a 20-30 minute lifting session is just what I need right now. I can't be all in off the bat, just not in that kind of shape at the moment. My little gym has strength bootcamp Monday and Wednesday…
  • Honestly I don't know how people find the time to do both. Perhaps I'm just not as dedicated as the average runner. I considered implementing lifting into my run schedule and after the 1st workout I could barely move for the next three days, let alone finish out 20+ more miles. Side note, I also play volleyball one - two…
  • I am a practicing catholic as well. I considered setting an exercise goal, but I think that would be to my benefit more than anything and probably wouldn't be enough of a "sacrifice." I'm debating on not eating out or no shopping beyond basic necessities.
  • Pr'd my second half marathon yesterday - 1:58:18. The last time I ran over 8 miles was in May....yikes. Definitely wished I had pushed my training harder for a better outcome, but I kind of chose warm weather and water over running :) I have my 3rd half scheduled for October 19th. Definitely not enough time to really…
  • Ran my 2nd half marathon this weekend. Pr'd by 43 seconds. Not a lot, but the race went much better than I anticipated. I haven't done anything over 8 miles (embarassed to admit that) in quite some time. Looking forward to my 3rd in October.
  • My first half marathon in May was fine. I didn't lose weight, but I didn't gain weight either. Since then I've teatered over the 165lb mark which is not the side of that I want to see. Ultimately I would like to get closer to 145-150, but I'd be happy at this point to be at 160 before I run the next half.
  • My September goal is to lose a minimum of 5 lbs. I don't really have an exercise goal because I'm currently in training for two half marathons - 9/21 and 10/19. Apparently I've used that as an excuse to eat anything and everything in sight. I'm starting to think the extra 5-10 lbs is impacting my running.
  • I've read alot on MFP about TDEE, but never implemented it myself. I've calculated it and it seems like an insane amount of food, I'm sure as fellow runners you can agree. I only average 30 - 35 miles per week and my TDEE recommendation even with a reduction of 20% to reduce fat is around 2500. Curious how many people…
  • I'm not sure, I would assume they're the same things though. Surprisingly you don't really notice them when you have them on. I was afraid they'd cause me to blister on the big toe and third toe from friction and they never have. Just poking around on the internet I saw dr. scholls carries toe wraps that are similar but I…
  • My second toe toenails might as well be pulled. As soon as they grow back I lose them again. My podiatrist gave me little gel toe sleeves to put over my toes. I refer to them as my toe condoms. They reduce the tenderness when you first lose the toenail. I'm not that great about wearing them every run. Mine are mostly due…
  • Thanks so much this was incredibly helpful. My mileage is close to your recommendation, but this helps to understand the best way to get the most out of my mileage.
  • Ran my first half marathon yesterday 1:59.01. My goal was to be under 2 hours and I just barely made it in. Benchmark is established, excited to see what I can do when I actually follow a training plan. I totally get why you are all addicted to these now. I think I'm still on a runners high!
  • I've been running now for 19 months. Finally signed up for my first half marathon, May 4th. Feel free to send an invite.
  • Sign me up. I have less than 50 days until my sisters wedding and need to get down 15-20 lbs.
  • Unfortunately no. I live in Nebraska and will be running the Lincoln Half.
  • I really liked this one. Wish I had found it sooner. I will definitely have to look at the marathon novice next. I have been considering a marathon, just trying to decide if I have the time with two little ones at home. Thanks so much for sharing, it makes me feel better about where I'm at with my couple of set back weeks…
  • That's no judgement towards anyone, hope it doesn't come across that way. I'm super competitive (with myself) and I don't want to finish my first race thinking "I could have or should have."
  • My only goal is to run the entire thing, anything less wouldn't be completing it in my mind. I'll worry about pace once I have a few races under my belt. I have not previously heard of the scale back week. Thank you for sharing this information. It's also comforting to hear that it doesn't take 30+ miles per week to be…
  • Delayed start. Height - 5'10 CW - 163 GW - 145
  • I have way too many tennis shoes, but I'm currently only rotating two for my runs: Brooks Ravenna 5 Adrenaline GTS 14 Total Brooks snob - glad to see I'm not alone!
  • Hi all, I'm Kelsey. I started running in October 2012 as a way to finally lose the baby weight (youngest was 2 so not sure it was "baby" weight anymore). I was an athlete growing up and played volleyball for a year in college. Even though I ran track in high school I was definitely not a runner, in hind site I think I…
  • There's a fine line with kids and potty training I think. Wait too long and they'll outsmart you. Both of mine were smart enough to do it, they knew it and so did I. When I'd had enough I just put them in underwear and said make a mess if you wish. I never had trouble with either of them once I did it. Our son had to wear…
  • I still dont consider myself a "runner" however, I do average 30+ miles per week.
  • 5'10 - currently 163. I'd like to get down to 150, but not sure any lower than that is possible. We'll see when I cross that bridge.
  • 1/13 - 168 1/20 - 167.3 1/27 - 165.1 2/3 - 164.2
