My short answer is both. I have the Fitbit Flex and LOVE it. It is giving me a general idea of how much I am sitting each day versus how much I am moving. I like that it bases my target calories on how active I've been, and it also "talks" to MFP, which makes the calorie logging part of it easy (the Fitbit app sort of…

I've toyed with buying the DVDs but am curious about whether it's possible to combine that program with four or five days a week of running? I'm usually following a training plan of some sort or another, and it seems like it's pretty much this program (Insanity, p90X, etc.) with no time for anything else?

This is interesting. When I first started MFP, I was eating 1200 calories a day and constantly starving. Was eating back exercise calories but was training for a half-marathon and DRAGGED during all of my runs. I recently bumped up to 1650 for a variety of reasons, and that feels doable over the long haul, but I can't…

I'm 5'3" and was 130 in high school and a size 6. I'd be thrilled to be a size 8 now so I am shooting for that rather than choosing a random number. There is going to be such a huge variation here. My size 6 at 130 would be someone else's size 6 at 100. My mom is about my height and used to be under 100 pounds but looked…

Regarding the strength training thing, I've been told that after a long run (I am currently training for a half-marathon but did a marathon last fall) I may weigh more because your muscles retain fluid or are swollen while trying to repair/recover from a tough workout. Don't quote me on this because I may have the details…

This happens to me too. It's frustrating as he**. I never post the higher weights--just keep my current low. From week to week, my weight fluctuates sometimes three to five pounds. I KNOW that even if I am not 100 percent in my calorie counting for a given week, there is absolutely NO way I could have gained three or five…

I'm 5'3". My goal is 145. Once I get there, I guess I'll see. I was 130 in high school and was a size 5. I'd be happy to be a size 8 now (currently in 10). So we'll see. It's hard for me to figure out a healthy goal weight because I have a lot of lean muscle mass (used to be a gymnast). I did a body fat analysis that gave…

This is interesting because I'm having a hard time figuring out my calorie goal. It was 1250 with a goal of one pound a week. Two weeks ago, I bumped it to 1360, or whatever the "lightly active" designation gives me. I FINALLY lost a pound as of this morning. It had been a month since I logged a loss. I now have 10 pounds…

I think anything is possible when it comes to running, and I'd never tell anyone that they couldn't do what they set out to do. That said, I'd really suggest starting with a half-marathon before jumping to the marathon, especially if you've never raced a long distance before. And especially if you've got a bad knee right…

Compression sleeves on legs? Or are you talking about the arm warmers? Runner's World has done a few articles recently on compression sleeves for legs. It sounds like the jury is out on whether or not they help you run longer, better, faster. But there seems to be an agreement that sleeves are great for recovery after a…

I totally have something like that and have never used it. Maybe it's time to give it a whirl? I also have a spibelt that i never use...

This is my biggest complaint about women's fitness gear. My kingdom for a pocket with a zipper! +1 And the main reason I run in skirts when I run long. I'll check out Lulemon. I've never looked at their stuff.

I tried the Runkeeper app (I don't think Nike+ is available for Android, which...boo!!), but I kept getting "poor signal" messages. I stick to my Garmin now, just because I don't really like running with my phone anyway. But I have a friend who runs w/ Nike+ on her iPhone and really likes it.

Yes, I've found this to be the case too, only I'm not subtracting the calories I would have burned if I'd done nothing. I should probably do that. Did you figure that out by diving your BMR by hours in the day?
-
Wow! I seem to be burning about 100 calories per 10 minutes of running (per Garmin). How long does it take you to run 10 miles? I do wonder how accurate the HRMs are. My friend's Runkeeper app told her she burned 153 calories for the same three-mile run that my Garmin had me at 391 for. But if your HRM is giving you what…

I started using the HRM that goes with my Garmin because I thought the MFP were insanely high. However, for running, they seem to be fairly accurate, with some big exceptions. I wonder if that's because you can get so specific about pace? Anyhow, I'm training for a half-marathon, so on days I do my long run, I'll log an…

Here's a question: Do you run with an HRM? I recently started wearing the HRM with my Garmin (mostly so I can make sure I'm recording an accurate calorie burn here). I ran on a Monday and had a great run, good, steady pace. The next day I went for another run--same distance. But my pace was WAY off what I was running on…

I never bothered with trying to keep my water cold. But you could freeze it before you go out, and then it will be cold as it thaws. I'm not sure how heavy it would be that way when you're starting out though.

+1 on the 2Toms!! ETA: I'm going to have to try the MC bra mentioned too. I have permanent scars from the chafe marks my bras have left (and that's WITH 2Toms). My doctor was horrified when she first saw them. I think she thought someone was beating me at home. I also second the running skirts for racing simply because of…

I never run in cotton. Just a personal preference, plus I sweat like crazy. My favorite pair of running pants is from road runner sports.com. I am also a huge fan of runningwarehouse.com and they offer free two-day shipping and free returns. I'd suggest just ordering a bunch of pairs and then returning what doesn't work.…

I had NO idea that it was supposed to be washed. So my answer is no. Oops.

My must-haves? First, LOVE the YURbuds. If you haven't tried them yet, I highly recommend them. And this is from someone who couldn't run with ear buds because they always fell out. I've run miles and miles w/ my YURbuds not falling out. My others: My Mizuno Wave Inspires Ice baths are a yes when I'm running long distances…

I currently run five days a week. I think even six days a week would be okay, but I do tend to agree that everybody needs at least one rest day a week. From what I've read (and I read a lot of running-related stuff), your body does a lot with the rest day in terms of muscle recovery, etc. Of course, a lot depends, too, on…

How about a running skirt with built-in shorts? Skirt Girls has some cute styles, and those shorts seriously will NOT ride up. Otherwise, check to see if shorts with a longer in-seam might work better? I don't tend to have a problem with chafing and shorts except on really long runs (when I tend to stick with running…

It's impossible for someone to recommend a shoe brand to someone else. Like, I swear by my Mizunos. My husband likes Brooks. It's really individual based on your feet (flat, normal, high arch) and your gait. I'll second or third or fourth the people who recommended you find a running shoe store and start there. They'll get…

When making a new running playlist, I always get ideas from the folks at Another Mother Runner. They have tons of playlist ideas. Check it out: http://anothermotherrunner.com/good-running-tunes/playlists-tunes-to-move-to/

Yurbuds!!!! I cannot say enough good things. I have teeny ears and could NEVER run with ear buds until I found these. They are awesome. I've run pretty long distances with them (can't remember if I got them before or after my marathon, but I know I've run at least 10 miles with them at a pop if not 26.2) and have never,…

Let me know if you decide to go for it! I've got three under my belt and can answer any questions you have. :)

I'd keep doing what you are doing (of course, I'm not a man!!). I'm lucky to hit a pound in a week!
