  • Just bought a heart monitor today and took it to our Zumba class tonight. We have a one hour class, with instructors that I say choreograph an intermediate level class. I have been doing Zumba for 1 1/2 years, so am familiar with most of the moves. Tonight is 3 classes into our new fall session - so I am still learning…
  • You have done everything right so far. And time and your youth will likely work in your favour...with patience. But I guess that at the same time, we may be left with reminders of our former selves. Such reminders should serve as how far we have come, not that it was in vain. We made choices that were not healthy and must…
  • I am 51. Started my journey in January 2010. Goal was to go from 160 down to 138 lbs. I started journaling my food and exercising. Weight started coming off and by summer I was down to 140. Then 2 weeks vacation bumped it up by 7 lbs. Since then, I have had absolutely NO luck with getting back to the 140 mark. I was down…
  • A good start is to evaluate how you got to where you are. Do you have some 'weaknesses' when it comes to food? If you can isolate just one to start with, get rid of it and replace with a better choice/or eliminate it....you are already on the road to success. Diets suck. Healthy eating is a way of life that you can…
  • Where is the other 23 lbs going to come off of?????? You look fantastic!! I started at same weight...but for my age I figured that I would be pretty happy at 138!!!
  • I was told by our fitness people that a salt craving is often a hydration issue. Drink water! For sweet cravings, distraction! Go for a short walk, drop and to 20+ pushups (that will be the last time you give credit to a craving!! :)...do something to take your mind off of it. If I really can't get over a sweet craving, I…
  • Suffice to say that for most people, they are losing the very healthly 1 lb/wk. Usually when you start exercising, eating healthier, watching calories and sugar intake (most important!!), your first month is likely to be your best...and depending on how much you have to lose, it could be double that. Your best approach is…
  • I can tell you that when I took the deep water aquatics classes, we had 2 very overweight ladies join the classes. When I looked at them, all I felt was admiration. The courage it took them to be in that class, let alone get into a bathing suit.....wow! Now, 6 years later, I can't tell you how they looked in their bathing…

  • I think the seniors might really enjoy it...less jolting on the hips. But I have done deep water aquatic classes and Zumba and as the Zumba moves are faster, they would not translate well in the water. Always worth a try.

  • Almost at the end of my first Zumba session. LOVE IT!!!! But then I love dancing anyway, so it was probably a given. Our instructor is AMAZING. Apparently our fitness coordinator interviewed 20 applicants and only felt 1 was worthy of teaching at our facility. After having a sub two weeks ago, I now know why she only hired…
  • ...actually, there is "Strength training" line...
  • That section is only for your benefit to track/record your progress as far as reps and weights. Look under the list for cardio...and you will find stuff for weight training. calisthenics...or whatever.
  • Welcome. I am 50 and was a late starter, so you are a smart lady to get started now!!! I am not much for adding people I don't know, so I guess I don't benefit as much from the 'support' aspect. But what this mfp has done for me is make me accountable. I log all my food intake, and can't help but feel guilty if I am…
  • My daily quota is 24!!!!! That is next to impossible!!! I have heard some people say that they don't 'count' natural sugar from a fruit in it's natural form (apple, orange), but you have to in juice format. Definitely, if my sugar counts are above my max. I can guarantee I will not experience the weight loss - even if I am…
  • I bought a Taylor. (Canada...London Drugs) You put in your age, height, and sex and it gives you weight, % fat, bone, water and muscle mass. As you muscle mass go up, you may not see weight decrease. I really like it. There are a few models like this. Weight Watchers has one too. Cost $70 Cndn
  • I work in the office part of a large recreational facility. Staff and friends who work out are thrilled with this site as well....accountability is HUGE. That is the first thing I tell peole when I mention this site....it's makes you accountable. Seeing the numbers in black and white cannot be ignored.
  • If you are near a fitness centre that offers TRX Suspension Training classes......SIGN UP. Absolute wonders for core!!! Google it on the 'net'. Created by a Navy Seal. Awesome workout for new people to exercise, or workout junkies, because it forces you to use muscles TOGETHER with your core. Not something free weight or…
  • I'll tell my daughter to post. Black belt WTF Taekwondo. age 18. not training at school as post secondary schedule and now work have made class time impossible.
  • Well count me in. I started the year at 158 (160 at Christmas to be totally honest!). I turned 50 last year...so that doesn't help the metabolism. My goal is to get down to 138. (I think I would be happy at 135, but I think the last time I was that weight people thought I looked too skinny. So I will see.) Right now I am…
  • I wanted to lose 20 lbs. I am 5'4" and was at 158 lbs when I finally decided that the older I got (just turned 50 last year) this losing weight was just going to get harder...and it would keep on creeping up if I didn't change anything. So Jan 2010 I started swimming 3x/wk, Feb 2010 started with MFP and added in a few…
  • Exercise is the key!!!! It is said that we are supposed to have 30-60 min per day of physical exercise - doesn't always have to be weight training - so it is important to add walking into your day (when you wouldn't normally do it). I must get into that "fill up on veggies" thing...as some days when I haven't earned many…
  • p.s. I added sugar and sodium tracking to the calories, carbs, protein and fat that is the mfp default.
  • Definitely don't fill up on junk food! I have reached a plateau as well. But Easter just passed, and more chocolate and jelly beans seemed to find there way into my stomach. The higher the sugar, the worse I feel and the weight doesn't budge. I have started focussing on the protein and carb numbers, as I see that I am…
  • Sure have....drives me NUTS!!!!! But I have found that the weeks that my sugar intake is at least very close to MFP, I lose weight. However, if my sugar goes high....weight plateaus. Needless to say....I have to get my sugar intake back on track...fast!!!
  • I live in Alberta, Canada and work at a very large multi-use recreation facility. Our fitness & wellness centre off many classes for MS clients. I type up their evaluation forms after their session is over....and they always love them. Kinesis is a very popular one. We also have yoga, etc. They love the social aspect, as…
  • We have a 4 level split. I don't go right down to the bottom level that often....more when I didn't have the laptop upstairs though! But everything I do involves stairs. From TV room, it is upstairs (8 steps) to kitchen or our bedroom or laptop. From TV room, it is downstairs 8 steps to kids rooms and laundry. So MANY…
  • I am only ~10 lbs away from my goal and I still don't like myself in a bathing suit. Hence why I am now focusing on weights and toning...maybe I will get those lines again lol!!! On preparing to go to Mexico, I had to do the dreaded swim suit shop. When I put on this one "Miracle Suit" (advertising says it takes 10 lbs off…
  • I use calisthenics (or whatever) and use the line depending on my intensity. It is what I use, whether it is an accurate count or not....but as I have been losing weight and inches even when eating some of the 'earned' calories I figure it is not way off the mark.
  • Good for you!!! It is so true that we are role models for our children....and how much they learn from us. Just look around you in the grocery store. Overweight people generally have overweight children. Because of how they cook for the family. Because of the lack of physical activity they engage in as a family. Because of…
  • One thing to say here.....I chose kids over myself. But the role model I set for my girls was not one of being physically active and looking after my body and my health. I am in great health, regardless...but I regret not being a better role model for them pertaining to exercise. One is 21 and carrying 30 extra lbs. The…
