Not true. The latest research is leaning towards a low carb diet. The best carbs come from fruits and veggies, which is what Atkins promotes.
-
I agree. I wish people would stop thinking that all we eat is bacon, topped with mayonnaise and dipped in lard. Just not true! I've never felt better eating this way!
-
It took about 2 weeks to get mine. I would really recommend getting an Atkins book and reading about it. They will send you the plan with the sample bars you ordered, but to really understand the why's and the how's of it, you should get the book. I have Atkins Essentials, which is a quick start. The basics, in layman's…

And, this is the kind of attitude that gives Atkins a bad name. Read the book! The first two weeks are the most restrictive, then you can slowly add your carbs back in. SLOWLY so you can see what foods trigger weight loss stalls or weight gain.

This will be my 3rd year doing Atkins. The first two times were successful, but I did it with a plan of stopping when I reached a goal, instead of making it a lifestyle change. So, yes, Atkins is my permanent way of eating now. Some people do not research Atkins, or do it incorrectly (re: there own way), and fail. Then,…

To the original poster: As much as I think that some people here are misinformed about the Atkins diet (it's low carb, not NO carb, and those carbs come from healthy veggies), they are correct, in that if you are in the mindset of doing this as a fad or quick fix, you are going to regain any weight you lose. You have to…

Hello! There's a bunch of people doing Atkin's here, or some version of low-carb. I started it in 2011, and lost 67 pounds. I got pregnant, gained about 15 pounds back, and have maintained for a year, now I'm back to Atkin's to lose the rest of the weight I wanted to lose.

Atkins going on two years now. Besides the weight loss, my heartburn went away, my snoring stopped, my blood pressure is in normal range, my back pain is gone. I have tons of energy, I never need an afternoon nap anymore, I don't feel bloated, I never feel hungry, and I never feel like I over ate, either. People will say…

I should mention that my husband does all the meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking. He makes time, by choice.

We agree. Like I said on a different thread, American's have done a miserable job of policing themselves. I don't think this proposal is the answer, but I agree that it's a step in the right direction. Any movement forward is progress, IMO. But doing nothing is not helping fix the obesity problem at all.
-
My point being that for a little work, smart shopping and meal planning, a family of 6 can eat very healthy for LESS than it would cost to eat at McDonalds.
-
This is neither here or there, but when I've visited Europe (the last time 3 years ago), a 16 oz water was 4 american dollars, and one 12 oz Coke was about $4.
-
FAIL! This is inaccurate. My family of 6 (me, husband and 4 kids) rely on one income. My school-teacher husbands income. We are considered above poverty level, and lower-middle class is stretching it. We eat fruit and veggies at every meal. We don't have gym memberships. It is more expensive for our family to eat at…

We've had government-mandated physical education in schools since the 1960s, dude. And I walk everywhere in my city. On sidewalks. [/quote] American's have failed miserably at policing themselves, or we would not have found ourselves with this obesity problem to begin with. The people on this site are incredibly conscious…

I've been eating the low-carb tortillas and pitas lately, and I've totally stalled. What started out as a seemingly good way to enjoy taco night with my family, has turned into a crutch. I may have to give them up for a while, and see if that is the problem.
-
I know what you're talking about. My dinner last night was salad with parmesan cheese, tomato's, onions and ranch dressing, a side of grilled yellow peppers, and an 8 ounce sirloin.
-
A large amount of the information that the people above are telling you is incorrect. Atkins is about eating healthy. You are getting a large amount of your daily carbs in the form of vegetables and salads. You are eating healthy fats from sources such as avocados, olive oil and nuts. Yes, you eat protein, but are not to…
-
LOL! My kids do that, too! And they play an annoying game every night at the dinner table....mommy can't have this...mommy can have this, but she can't have that! Glad they are aware of my diet, though, and some of the nutrition stuff is sinking in, too. After doing Atkin's for almost a year, here's what I noticed: --my…

I'm also still in Atkins Induction phase (20g net carbs a day), for almost a year. I'm down 67 pounds. My energy levels are through the roof (except this week because I've gone to bed late and am working on about 6 hours of sleep a night)!
-
That's a tough one. On paper, it sounds like you're doing everything right. Are you eating too much cheese, nuts, or hidden sugars? Caffeine? I'm going through my own plateau right now, and I think I've narrowed down the culprits to Peanut butter and almonds. Darn nuts! Don't give up...even if you aren't losing, you're…

I read this as saying that it's only about calories, the type of food doesn't matter? Because a twinkie (150 calories) = 5 cups of broccoli (30 cal/cup) = roughly 2 apples (80 calories each). I'm going out a limb and saying that the Okinawans are not healthy because they've been eating Twinkies every day for breakfast,…
-
Good for you! Diabetes and heart disease run in my family, and I'm taking control of my body NOW, by eating lower carbs, and less processed foods. Weight loss is a side benefit.
-
Just from taking a quick glance at an Okinawan diet, it would seem that they eat a whole lot of whole foods and veggies...not a lot of processed or refined food. Very little sugar. One website I found said they eat 20 servings of veggies a day. They eat fish and lean meat, but not as much as American's. They are healthier.…
-
I don't see that you're eating any veggies! Are you eating good carbs at all? Did you read the book? In induction, for the first 2 weeks, you need to be getting 12-15 of your 20 net carbs a day from salads and veggies. Don't go overboard on the meat! And don't eat too many non-veggie carbs, like those found in cheese,…
-
I think you're both saying the same thing, and agreeing with each other. I also just shop the perimeter...that's where the fresh produce is, the meats, the cheeses. There's one aisle (the baking aisle) that I would be able to avoid altogether, except it's where I have to buy my flax, my Splenda, spices and extracts. Also,…

Me, too! I've tried the portion control, and the calorie counting, and working out in the gym excessively. But, I was always hungry. Always cheating. Always feeling guilt. With low carb, I like the foods, I like how I feel, and I'm never hungry. To each his own.
-
Of course it's a lifestyle change. If you quit any diet, and go back to your old eating habits, you're going to gain the weight back. Obviously. I think the biggest obstacle for any low-carber, is to find ways to have variation in their meals, and to find substitutes for the things that used to be comfort foods for them.…

Ok, this is right from the book "The Atkins Essentials": "During the first week of Induction, in some people, Atkins has a strong diuretic effect. When you lose a large amount of water, as you do at the start of some weight loss programs, you can lose electrolytes, the minerals sodium and potassium, and magnesium and…
-
Congrats on your weight loss in Induction! I hope you are able to keep going, and slowly add your carbs back in. The leg pain is not uncommon, but it could mean you're not getting enough salt, or enough potassium. I don't have my book in front of me, but if I remember correctly, try to have some chicken broth. It does go…

You are misinformed. Atkins is a lifestyle as much as Paleo is a lifestyle. Atkins has been around since the '70's, so nearing 50 years. That's quite a "fad". Atkins does not recommend staying on low-carb forever, and really, just promotes lots of healthy veggies, and less processed and refined carbs. Meh! Do what you want…
