  • I have type 1 diabetes, so I watch EVERYTHING I eat, no matter what. Counting carbs is helpful because when you consume a large amount of carbs at one meal, your body needs a large amount of insulin to keep the sugar levels in the blood from spiking. As a result, it often drops sharply after (1-2 hours, depending on the…
  • Hi Samantha! What a great goal  I'm a type 1 diabetic as well, as is my niece. We did a half marathon a few years ago & it was a great experience!! Something I wish that someone had told me is that some type one diabetics do not sweat very much. This can prevent your body from cooling itself off during the race &…
  • I've had diabetes for 19 years (type 1) & this is great advice.
  • Before my gym started offering more flexible classes, I worked out at lunch several times a week. I brought a change of clothes, deoderant, and baby powder, since I did higher intensity workouts. I didn't have time to get to a gym, but there is a long hall in my buiding - I did animal crawls, pushup crawls, plank, burpees,…
  • I agree! Green tea has some benefits, but I wouldn't make myself drink it if I didn't like it. I drink a couple cups a day, but that's all.
  • Try the "clean eating" diet (Tosca Reno). I follow that (loosely - I'm sure if true "clean-eaters" saw my diary, they wouldn't claim me lol). Before trying it, I was starving to death trying to do 1200 calories a day, and I was working out just to get the extra calories for snacks, instead of working out for me. On the…
  • It's awesome that you want to serve the country, and that you're willing to work so hard to do it. Good for you!!!
  • I just eat it with some Truvia.
  • Type 2 is not absolutely preventable. That's a myth. Now, I do agree that In many cases it CAN BE PREVENTABLE, but not every case. We are only aware of the risk factors of diabetes, but the actual cause of Type 2 Diabetes is unknown. Believe it or not, there are some skinny people with type 2 diabetes who eat right. There…
  • This was a rude response to something someone said above, which isn't a right thing to do. Hence the edit.
  • I appreciate that you've been around those syringes all of your life, and you probably have a different perspective from someone who hasn't, but how many of them have you had to shove into your gut?? Not so much fun. Did you ever have to jump rope for 2 hours because you ate a piece of pie? I've been watching every single…
  • I'm a type 1 diabetic (which means, it's an auto immune problem - and I got it as a little and I might add really skinny, kid). I do NOT appreciate when the doctor on that show announces to contestants that they have diabetes with a condescending, judgmental attitude, under the guise of "helping" people. Diabetes is a life…
  • Nope - a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. Burn them the fun way and forget the rest
  • Gotta add my vote for greek yogurt, too! It's got all that great protein - keeps my blood sugar level all morning. I like it plain with some truvia. Fruit is nice too.
  • I'm a type 1 diabetic so diet and nutrition are pretty important to me. My personal practice is to eat at least 1200 calories and eat back any calories OVER 300 extra that I burn in exercise IF I feel hungry. My doctor gave me a ratio of protein to carbs to fat percentages and when I follow that as closely as possible,…
  • I know how you feel. I got on myfitnesspal to help me lose the last 10-15 I need to reach my goal. It's crazy how hard a plateau can be to bust through!! My friend is a group trainer and she suggested I try adding two things for just a couple weeks. 1. No refined sugars and 2. No carbs after 5:00pm. Been at it a week and a…
  • I'm on the third floor of my office building. I pick the staircase which has the best temperature (some have windows, some don't). Then I just go up and down the same one for 15 minutes on my break. Burns crazy good calories, and really strengthens the legs. As it gets easier, I increase my speed.
  • My doctor suggests that 1 lb a week is good.
  • The other day, some lady (who seemed otherwise perfectly normal) kept looking over at my speed and upping her treadmill to match. Now, I have the attention span of a gnat, so if I'm going to run on a treadmill, I change the speed 12-15 times per mile. So that meant 3 1/2 miles of looking, copying, looking, copying... I…
  • Carmel Half-Marathon Geist Half and I think there is one more half marathon I'm looking into around June :)
