Welcome to MFP. It takes a little time to figure out the system, especially if--like me--you jump right in and don't take the time to read some of the background posts. (Important safety tip I didn't do right away: read the various pinned posts in the Getting Started section.) We're scratch cooks too, and the first few…

I don't go over a lot, not because I pay a lot of attention to it, but because we don't eat a lot of prepared/packaged food and don't add a lot to our food. Today, though, between canned soup at lunch (out of anything decent AND easy) and a corn chip craving I couldn't resist, I'm way over on salt. I think I won't weigh in…

He's also 8 inches taller than I am and male. Even without the active job, he'd be able to eat a lot more than I can and maintain his weight. However, until a few years ago, I was able to eat almost as much as he could and not gain--and I'm active, but not exceptionally so. No idea why, but I don't like that it's changed.…

I can do side planks without modifications, and yesterday, I managed an arm balance in yoga. (Not for long, but getting off the ground at all is huge progress, considering I was scared to even try before last week.) In fact, I can sum up the NSV in one word: STRONGER.

Hi! I'm 5'5" and 147 as of this week. We even seem to have similar body types. And 147 looks and feels pretty darn good, doesn't it? But only you can decide if you want to drop a few more pounds or go to maintenance and focus on fitness. Personally, I'm shooting for 140, maybe 135. Partly it's because I have…

I too am blessed with an active husband who could happily eat a quarter-cow and a loaf of bread smothered in butter at a sitting. We've had good luck finding Cooking Light (CookingLight.com) versions of comfort foods we both love without all the fat and calories but with most of the yum factor. He gets bigger portions and…

Since no one's said it yet: losing two pounds is a great start. Yay! :flowerforyou: You may have lost more real weight than that but you're retaining some water because of starting the JM Shred and/or eating too much sodium. Drink lots of water. It will help if that's what's going on and is a good idea anyway. It's also…

I did side planks today, without the modifications I needed just a few days ago. A little thing to some, but it proves my efforts are working, even more than the numbers on the scale do.

Alcohol helped make me fat. And moderate, occasional portions of alcohol are helping me stay happy (along with occasional desserts) as I reverse the process.

MFP's built-in calorie deficit alone should let you lose weight. Exercise is just a good thing overall--and if 20 minutes a day plus a relatively active job is what you can squeeze in ATM, it's better than nothing.

Do you have a partner or even a cooperative roommate? Ask them to hide the treats and dole them out in reasonable portions. (They get to eat some too, of course, which may solve the problem completely.) That way you'll have to think about whether you have wiggle room for some tasty empty calories or are just bored and…

Frozen, pre-cooked shrimp. It thaws in about 3 minutes. If you don't feel like cooking, put it on top of a big ol' salad and use a modicum of dressing. (Not fat-free. A lot of the nutrients in lettuce and other salad greens are fat-soluble, so you need a little fat to get much benefit from the salad.) I can't tell from…

If you ever see me reporting that kind of burn, it's because I did a long hike. This means I spent a few hours in the woods to burn those calories, because I enjoy the activity. I'm sure I could burn that much going a shorter time on an elliptical--except I'd rather shoot myself in the foot. And if I shot myself in the…

There are crap genetics and then there are crap genetics. My mom's side of the family are short and tend to be "broad in the beam," even the fit or skinny ones. Some of it's bone structure. Some of it's fat distribution. But it's definitely in the genes. Then there was my dad. Tall, had to work to keep weight on,…

Yes, oh yes. You'd think our bodies would crave nutrient-dense, healthy food when we're sick, but I know almost no one who wants a salad topped with chicken breast and avocado when they have a bug. No, we want chicken soup, the more noodles the better, or mac and cheese, or PB straight from the jar, or an entire batch of…

I haven't lost a lot of weight compared to some of the people who've pitched in on this thread but yes...overall I'm very happy. I'm less lumpy, I'm regaining some muscle definition, I feel stronger, I have more endurance, and I think I'm losing the borderline matronly look I'd been creeping into. I have problem areas…

This problem is mystifying to me, as I'm pretty much constantly hungry and my deficit's not all that big. I always wonder, when I see posts like this one, whether the OP is actually eating more than s/he thinks?

Looks like a lot of grilled/broiled meats, permitted veggies and salad with nuts for crunch and bit of goat cheese for you, and eggs for breakfast--which doesn't sound horrid, if rather repetitive for a couple of weeks. Any restrictions on fats other than no butter? (That is, can you use olive oil?)

Don't wait until you're at goal to start belly dancing. The community is incredibly supportive of all body types and it's a lot of fun! :-)

A good rule of thumb is that four oz of meat is about the size of a pack of playing cards. Really, it's the Guinness that'll get you. :drinker:
-
What was in the air last night, anyway? Sounds like a lot of us ate/drank a bit more than we'd planned. :drinker: Well, I for one enjoyed the lovely meal and those drinks and will just watch myself the rest of the week.

That's the spirit. It's so easy for boredom snacks to add up when you're not paying attention. I think we've all been there. (Ask me about my frustrating old job and the dried fruit in my desk. Nutritious, yes, but way more caloric than I realized.) Now you know what you need to watch, which is a step in the right direction.

The OP sounds like they're probably working out at home, but here's a plea to those who go to a gym or studio. If you're sick, stay home, please. Work out there if you feel up to it, but don't share your bug. We're working out to be healthier, not to catch the Crud.

Milady, you have changed the rules and won the game of life! Congratulations.

Why get complicated? One pat of butter is only 36 calories, and that drenches your toast with butter. Use less than a pat!
-
Apple butter. Check the particular apple butter, but most are made without added sugar and are pretty low calorie (and tasty).

Logging is a huge pain for me, and it takes me a hell of a lot more than "five minutes a day." I'm not one of those "eat basically the same things all the time" people, and I rarely packaged food. As a home cook and a foodie, I am always having to enter new recipes, which takes quite a while. I rarely measured things…

^ That. When I found myself having that moment, I mentally smacked myself and had a lovely meal. This is a long, meandering journey--enjoy the occasional detour and then get back on the main highway.

Measure/weigh and track what you're eating. Most people here insist you need to weigh EVERYTHING. Honestly I'm not always that fussy and I'm losing, but since you seem to be stuck, try weighing anything that isn't a liquid. That's the best advice I can give. More than likely you're eating a bit more than you think, so…
