  • Zucchini noodles sound tasty. Substitute for pasta? Probably not. Something good in their own right? Sounds promising. I'll try it this summer. Meanwhile, I'll stick to regular ol' pasta, just in smaller portions than I otherwise might.
  • Vegetables and legumes are a pretty big part of my diet, but I don't see myself ever doing a 100% plant-based diet. I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian as a younger woman and at the time I didn't miss meat, but I can't imagine giving up dairy and eggs. At this point, since my husband is a committed carnivore, I wouldn't try to go…
  • Pickles generally say 0 calories on the jar, but they do have a few. If it's under 5 calories per serving, it's legal to say 0 on the packaging. Probably not a big deal for a normal serving, but don't figure "hey, 0 calories!" and eat the whole jar. I was surprised to learn that black coffee has calories. 3 calories per 8…
  • I love plain yogurt, Greek or not, but I didn't like Oikos. Tasted both bitter and overly processed to me. (I can't really explain "overly processed," but the texture was oddly stiff, and it seemed like it had something in it besides milk and happy bacteria.) Try another brand and see if it works better for you. I've been…
  • I've done things like that and still managed to lose a half pound by the end of the week. Just eat a little less or move a little more the other days. Yeah, sometimes the yummy just sneaks up on you. My downfall was the cheese tray. OMG the cheese tray! Worth it at the time, though. :-)
  • You are my new best friend. Thank you!!
  • OP, I love you. The subject of weight loss seems to make a lot of us lose perspective and our senses of humor. Kudos for keeping both!
  • Jazz danced as a college student and right out of college. Belly danced seriously (performing regularly) until a few years ago, when my life went nuts. I was definitely in better shape when I danced regularly, and I *felt* better about my body. Also got to know some great people! I'm getting back to belly dancing or yoga…
  • 1) Congrats on the new arrival. 2) This sounds like something you should ask your doctor. The collective wisdom of the Internet can answer a lot of questions., but your body's doing an important extra job right now. Properly nourishing yourself and the baby while trying to lose the pregnancy weight fall into the realm of…
  • My grandmother weighed 75 pounds when she died and she was still pear shaped. A little tiny shriveled pear, but still a pear. Alas, I inherited her body type. I decided years ago that pears are lovely fruits and I'm going to be the juiciest, most delicious damn pear I can be!
  • I love mustard and turnip greens and I find I can saute them up fairly quickly (20 minutes or so). I like their bite! Collards...not so much. By the time I cook them enough to be tender, they taste like mush. I don't eat pork products (allergy) so I've pretty much given up on collards.
  • Sounds like it would be marvelous for winter camping at high altitudes or long-distance cross-country skiing, like Tibetan butter tea. Otherwise, I'll pass!
  • Check out your local thrift stores for DVDs, weights, and interim clothing as you shrink. Why buy new when people are getting rid of perfectly good stuff you can snag cheap? If you follow the whole chicken advice, take the carcass when you're done, stick it in a crockpot, cover it with water (don't fill the pot completely…
  • Are you quite petite? 1800 is the number I see thrown around as a standard recommendation for maintenance calories for women, so chances are you didn't gain much, if anything; what you're seeing is water weight from treats. So make a mental note to do better and go forth and eat a bit less. Also, think about whether 1200…
  • Usually yogurt, fruit and homemade granola, sometimes oatmeal and fruit. I mix it up on weekends with eggs in baskets or scrambled eggs, but for some reason it doesn't always fill me up. And coffee, of course. I miss homemade waffles. I haven't done the math, but I suspect they'd screw up the rest of my day.
  • I actually find I'm full a lot, especially if I have a large salad. Makes me happy, since I was convinced I'd be starving all the time. Relax and enjoy, since you're obviously doing something right!
  • Homemade chicken stock and bone broth are actually in the food database. May not be perfect, but I use it. It seems to be a bit higher in calories than storebought stock, but also more nutritious, which makes sense.
  • Extra-sharp Cheddar and a few Triscuit crackers. Hit the spot tonight.
  • And why does everyone feel the need to defend Oreos from the charge of being "bad" food? They're highly processed, full of artificial ingredients, and lacking in nutrition--pretty much the definition of junk food. A few Oreos aren't going to kill you, but you can hardly argue they're a healthy choice. (And they don't even…
  • When I want something sweet, I usually go for a few pieces of dark chocolate (25-50 calories each and very satisfying), or a 1/2 cup portion of ice cream. Just made a marvelous apple crisp from a Cooking Light cookbook that's about 200 calories for a portion--a small portion, mind you, but enough to let you know you've had…
  • Cheese is calorie-dense so I don't eat as much of it as I'd like...but that's because "as much of it as I'd like" is pretty much ALL THE CHEESE THERE IS and that's not the best idea even if you're not trying to lose weight. If you love cheese, plan for it. If you don't love cheese all that much and can easily skip it,…
  • I'm almost twice your age and one thing I've learned over my lifetime is that people always have opinions but that doesn't mean you have to listen to them. Seriously, it sounds like we have a similar body type. I'm descended from generations of big-hipped Irish ladies and look positively bony if I'm at the lower end of a…
  • Whoo-whoo! Good work! Hope you saved 100 calories or so because you deserve a glass of champagne!
  • I can't speak for everyone, but I know I'm always cautious about congratulating someone on a weight loss unless it's a good friend and I know s/he's been trying to lose. Their body isn't my business, ya know, and I don't want to sound like I'm judging their heavier self. So maybe your friends and co-workers are just a…
  • Heathyranne pretty much answered for me. I'll throw in whatever leftover veggies are around from last night's dinner: steamed broccoli, sauteed beans, a few stray brussel sprouts...In "garden season" things get crazier because I'll use a little bit of whatever is on hand.
  • 1) Don't be afraid of a little fat. A touch of butter or olive oil makes a huge difference in flavor--really, a teaspoon doesn't have that many calories. Don't know if you can do this on your cleanse, but consider it going forward. 2) Get the freshest, best quality veggies you can--from a farmer's market if possible. (I…
  • As salads. Roasted with a little olive oil. Sauteed with broth and again, a little olive oil. Steamed. In stews and soups. Pickled. Stir-fried with protein. Sometimes raw. But almost never frozen and then nuked with no seasoning other than salt and pepper. That's not a good way to make peace with vegetables. Give me a hint…
  • Seven full push-ups...which isn't a lot, but considering I couldn't do one not long ago, I'm pleased. Thank you, power yoga. All those planks to up-dog are paying off!
  • I'm curious--what are cinnamon supplements supposed to do? I've heard cinnamon can lower BP, but also that just incorporating a little more into your diet, sprinkled on oatmeal or someplace you can actually enjoy the flavor, will do the trick.
  • I meant to say: track how you're doing for calcium if you're concerned. You can put it as an option in the MFP tracker. I did for a while...and decided to go back to calcium supplements until I could find the kale in my garden under all the snow.
