Ah, that brings up a good point. MFP has my "goal" at 38. I'm not sure what that's based on. Maybe that's unnecessarily high?

1.5 to 2 lbs. per week is, I think, pretty aggressive, depending on your starting weight. From what I've read here, people who have a good bit to lose can do 2 lbs. per week pretty safely, but as you get closer, 1 or even .5 is sometimes a better option. 11 lbs. in 30 days is a lot. But I'm assuming the first week or so…

If you aren't hungry, it makes me wonder a couple of things. Have you been doing this for a while? And if so, what is the scale saying? If you're at a larger calorie deficit than MFP says you should shoot for, you should be seeing more rapid weight loss. If you're losing weight on target for the goal you set, it's possible…

QFT. You want the right shoes for *you* and a good running store can help.

Like most things, it depends. I used to always say outside was better. But I've got a goal of increasing my speed for the next event I run. Doing some treadmill work, where I can set a pace and it holds me to it, has helped. But I'm finding that I do need to follow it up with some outside runs at the same pace target so I…

(edit) Oops. Sorry. Call it a bump.

Exactly. If you change other things, it makes a difference. If you make a difference greater than the effect of the decreasing BMR, you won't gain weight. But if you try to eat the same diet you ate at 25 with no changes, you may be unhappy at 45.

Last one, just to make sure this hasn't muddied the waters, then I'll excuse myself from this one. If you care to, take a look at my math again you'll see that you've simply misunderstood what I was saying. No big deal. I probably should have said it more clearly. So I'll try to clear it up in case anyone else was…

I completely agree. As I said, I believe the point they're trying to make is that the difference is small enough that it can be overcome so should not be used as an excuse. Which I agree with. As I showed several posts ago, if you compare what someone can eat at age 25 with what they can eat ages 35-45, the small…

I see now. So fewer calories burned as you age. Oh. You make total sense. lol
-
To be fair, it's a lot easier when you get as tubby as I did. You look to be at a healthy weight already. Making changes from there is a lot harder.
-
If you are getting it done, then it isn't an excuse! Given what you've had to overcome, that's pretty awesome. Well done. (edited) Now with more awesome.

The BMR equation has four variables. They are: height, weight, activity level and age. The formula is the same, the equation is not. Something in the equation *has* changed; the age variable. It is not a constant. By definition, a variable is a factor in an equation. I think what you mean to say is, it's not a factor that…

Yes, when I said "over ten years" I did realize that was over a 10 year period. lol Thanks for clearing that up. And no, when you extrapolate 40 calories a day over a ten year period, then back again, it doesn't become 4 calories. And what on Earth does "4 calories a day per year" mean? Thanks for playing. As a departing…

I don't run 7 miles every day. I do it once a week. Seemed the appropriate comparison.

This may indirectly answer a question I have looming. At some point I'll transition from deficit to surplus and try to build some muscle. I never really understood what the whole "water weight" thing meant and wondered if that transition would result in a big, quick move up on the scale. Kinda sounds like it will. Not that…

Happy Birthday! And congrats! What a huge difference. And you're right, that's going to help your heart a ton.

I thought that's what a "girl push up " was. I don't recomend doing in the gym. They'll kick you out.

This post reminded me of this thread. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1212113-how-i-lost-6-and-a-half-pounds-in-a-night?page=1#posts-18958233

Awesome!

It does seem like a lot when you say it that way. It's actually been 9 weeks. But I lost a bunch the first two weeks. It evened off after that. Thanks everybody! (edit) Yeah - found it on my calendar. Six weeks ago tomorrow I went to my doctor and they weighed me. I'm down seven lbs. since then. So right around a pound a…

lol I thought I was the only person who ran without music. I talk to myself on the treadmill too. People look at me funny. But I like to psych myself up. "You got this!"
-
You rock! Getting to 3 miles is an awesome, er, um, milestone. lol. Especially if your goal is a 5k! Gives you confidence to run the distance before an event.

It works.

Well said, and I agree.

Ug. I bought a 12 pack of that 55 calorie junk for Super Bowl Sunday. What a mistake. First of all, it's got so little alcohol you might as well not have a drink at all. It tastes okay, but not great - not much taste at all, really. Just a waste.
-
Yup. I had to really limit the wine. I used to drink quite a bit of red wine. I still enjoy a little on a Friday, but just can't do it every night. Loads of calories and I don't want to be "saving calories" all day just so I can drink them away. And completely agree with the post above. Once you have a couple of drinks,…

Thanks guys. That's kind of what I instinctively thought. Appreciate the input.

The MFP calculations (and all other BMR calculations) say age is a factor in calculating the number of calories you burn. Do you disagree with them? You said, accurately, that I'm burning less than I was when I was younger. Calories in, calories out. Burning less is a factor regardless the cause. If I exercise less, I have…

I'm just curious why you think that's misleading. "150 calories/day is 45 minutes of walking." Okay. The question was, is it a factor? Yes. If you need to add 45 minutes of walking per day just to maintain the same weight, that *is* a factor. It is not a factor that can not be over come, and there is no reason for it to be…
