  • This - and you might find that after you start running a lot of miles on trails (and strengthening all those little muscle groups that keep you upright), that you need less stability on the road as well.
  • Wow! Thanks for letting us know! I knew he was missing, glad to know he is safe. Anyhooo..... that's a good reminder for me to stuff my space blanket back in my pack. I'm a bit of an oddball amongst my trail running friends for.... gasp..... always carrying iodine tabs, a compass, a whistle, and a space blanket. I don't…
  • Love your writing! I'm going to add you to my blog roll!
  • Dave, did you mean to link to a post mainly about weight gain? I want to read about the mud! FWIW, ultra weight gain is why I'm here on MFP. My weight has steadily crept upwards since taking up ultrarunning.
  • Sure - here are links to race reports on the 3 50 milers I've run: http://heatherrunstoomuch.blogspot.com/2014/01/winter-beast-of-burden-50-mile-race.html http://heatherrunstoomuch.blogspot.com/2013/05/race-report-2013-north-face-endurance.html…
  • I have a friend with a 5K bumper sticker! Also, his 5K PR is something around 16:15? He wins most of the 5Ks he runs. He's also run a bunch of 100 milers as well - I don't think he's won any of those, but I know he's won a handful of 50ks and a couple of small marathons. But..... OP, encourage your friend to sign up for a…
  • Gee, I wonder for how many this is inherited?
  • .... but not always.... I'm in PT for PF right now. (Wow is that alphabet soup!) I really though it wasn't PF, but the doctor that I saw was able to pretty conclusively show me WHY it was PF. Basically, we're prone to all sorts of foot problems as distance runners because we tire everything out and then bash on our feet,…
  • Others have given the good advice that you might want to chill for a bit and keep your current mileage for a month or so. That's a good idea. Mind if I ask what your time was? Now if you rolled off the couch and ran a 21 minute 5K, then ignore the following.... You might want to try adding in one "speed" session a week to…
  • I tend to like it, especially during a race because it cools me off and I can push harder. Some of my best times have been during seriously "awful" weather. I don't even notice, just that I'm cool and everything is "clicking". That you ABSOLUTELY should run in the rain is on the short list of advice I give to new runners…
  • Though with breaking up the long run..... Some breaking up is not as bad as others. If you're running 18 in the AM, coming home at 9:30 AM, and then topping it off with another two at 7PM, I'm thinking it's not worth the other 2. When field hockey season starts, I'll often get in about 14 miles before the kids wake up.…
  • I guess, but in a much less bad way than if you shot yourself, or had the gun wrestled out of your swollen hands.
  • For under 15 miles, I'll have a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee before leaving. And I'll take about 2 cookies with me.
  • Wow, I am very interested in that! I currently have an old-generation Soleus 1.0, which I love because it does next to nothing..... but this is so very attractive to me. I run trails and I run alone at night. Including trails.
  • Can you go back and get your asthma meds adjusted? If you're having asthma symptoms while doing cardio..... that's not good and you might need to switch medications to get it better under control. You can't out-cardio your asthma I'm afraid. I'm an asthmatic ultrarunner. i can't so much as walk fast down the block if my…
  • Ah, sorry - I don't know about android. I have "Find my friends" on the iPhone. It doesn't broadcast to my husband's phone, but if he checks in, it finds me. We use this all the time to figure out how long it will take one of us to get home from someplace. It's great for knowing when to put on dinner. << Edited to add -…
  • <<Double post, redacted>>
  • No, I'm sorry, but assault of female runners NOT rare, I'm afraid. I've had a few narrow misses myself. Once, while not running though, just out walking, a group of men tried to pull my friend and I into a van. They grabbed her but she got away and we both ran. I had a van follow me slowly down the street once. What was…
  • True that! If someone asked about how to carry several pounds of Gu or water, we absolutely would debate with him or her whether they need to carry that much weight. I think I've participated in a thread about carrying a lot of water recently. And on that note.... why are we carrying while running? Because if it's for self…
  • Swim for a week, get bored, start back running anyway. Not saying that's the best plan, but that's what I do.
  • I'm jealous! A friend of mine has a TRX set that she puts up over tree branches in the forest. It might be out of your budget, but it's bulky.
  • The good news about PF is that you don't NEED to restrict your workouts - you can work out according to pain tolerance. If you understand what's going on, the damage is already done. The pain comes from the healing process. Mine got really bad and I'm in physical therapy for it (I'm a distance runner) and my PT is trying…
  • It sucks, doesn't it? I get more hoots from cars on the rare occasion that I run in a bra and shorts. :(. But the main reason I do not is black flies. We have black flies here. With mosquitoes (which we also have a lot of), they are light and they fall off of you when you are running. But the black flies.... THWACK....…
  • If we're talking about heat.... Consider instead a bamboo tank? I have a few of these from spreadshirts..... www.spreadshirt.com They have "performance bamboo tanks by ALO". The bamboo tanks are sort of a medium between quick dry and cotton, so they stay a bit damp and can help cool you off. LOVE THEM! And they are so soft.
  • Count me in as someone that will go over but not under..... ....but..... I have a long history as a really lazy runner. I didn't do track or sports or anything growing up, so I came up from the idea that "just getting off the couch" was good enough. Sometimes I want to give myself a medal at the three mile mark, KWIM? But…
  • Welcome to distance running, ElliotTN! I'm not going to give you any tips on how to avoid this happening in the future, because, the truth is, THIS IS distance running. One question - you make a lot of reference to crap in your post about what went wrong. Are those metaphors? Because we might also be able to help you if…
  • And it comes down to.... it's not what he said but how he said it. He hasn't changed.
  • On top? Definitely get the x-ray, and if it's not better in three weeks, get another. On top and it could very well be a stress fracture, or, perhaps extensor tendonitis. Best wishes.

  • The stopping to walk will come back very soon at least.... part of that is knowing your body. Your body is different than it was when you last ran, and that's just a bit of practice. No matter how in shape we are or how fast we are, if we aren't sensitive to our bodies' subtle cues.... we're ALL stopping to walk.
