  • Welcome! You're doing something very good for yourself by recognizing your issues. It will be healthier for your relationship with your son and your other child to take care of yourself, have your own interests and be your own person. My brother is developmentally disabled, and I think the best thing my mom did was raise…
  • I agree with this. Viewing a piece of chocolate as a "cheat" to me is a defeatist attitude. To me it says that my relationship with food must be always that many, many foods are off limits and eating even one bite is cheating. I can't live like that forever, and I have to find an eating plan I can live with forever.
  • I am so glad not to be the only one that feels this way about beets. That said, I live in a country where they eat lots of beets, and nowadays just suck it up and eat them when they're served. It's fish I can't get the hang of eating
  • Totally agree with the others here. The same thing happened to me this first week back on. I actually gained a pound. But then weighed myself yesterday and am down that pound plus one more. I wouldn't worry until you are not losing for several weeks in a row. Then I would start being really strict about weighing food and…
  • To me, 20 double unders is a concrete goal as well since it's countable. A "spirit" goal to me is something like "buy clothes from the normal sizes". Then the spirit is reached when I get to a size 18 misses for example, but someone else might not feel the spirit is reached until they are in a size 12 or less. However, I…
  • Whenever I start eating healthy and exercising more, my husband gets more affectionate. Hugs all the time, sweet words and so on. I'm trying to figure out if he thinks I'm doing it to cheat and he's worried, or if he's just really pleased I'm taking care of myself and cooking healthy meals. I think option B because he's…

  • Naked. Or at most with a towel but preferably naked. I'm so glad I live in Finland where people would look at you really funny if you came into the sauna with workout clothes on. :noway: ETA: Actually I should try it and see if I would get kicked out for wearing clothes in the gym sauna. Nah. I hate it when people look at…
  • Amazing! You look like a completely different person!
  • I think calorie counters on most exercise equipment are bogus-they can't possibly tell accurately how much weight you've lost. I wouldn't count that calorie burn if I were you. The sauna in my building is usually about 180F by the time our hour comes up. It's kind of nice to think that we might be burning calories while we…
  • God, I love those! Next time I'm in America, I'm eating a half of one. My mom can have the other half, because I'm the sharing, sacrificing kind.
  • I'm starting over again but for me the problem is that a cheat meal turns into a cheat day turns into not logging at all. So this time, I decided that I can eat whatever I want on Friday night (sauna night) but I have to log EVERYTHING. I also made my diary public. I'm finding I can't eat as much as I plan to, but it does…
  • I think so. I live far away from my own family, but with them I could just eat small portions when i was dieting, and no problem. But now I live in my husband's country and the Finnish ladies (MIL and grandmother, and to a lesser extent, aunts) will actually get tears in their eyes or a little bit angry if you refuse food.…
  • foam rubber, the kind they used to make couch cushions out of (or maybe still do). I cannot touch foam rubber of any kind but especially the bare kind that looks kind of like a sponge. Or even some kinds of sponges *shiver*. My mom never knew that and she thinks it's hilarious - my dad made me a bed, and we didn't have a…
  • Polish on my mom's side, German and Irish on my dad's side. Like you, OP, shine a flashlight on me and I get a sunburn. So I'm pale all year round because whenever I'm outside, I use 50+ sunblock. Though here in Finland, most people assume I'm Finnish or Russian when they look at me.
  • Hi! I just bought a scale and actually I'm finding it much easier to deal with than measuring spoons and cups. I just stick my bowl, cup, plate or whatever on the scale and turn it on. It's at zero, then I add my food and voila, food measured :)
  • Congratulations on quitting. I quit a pack a day habit almost 9 years ago and will never go back. Now I'm on my next hurdle: losing the weight I gained quitting and the weight I gained before I quit :)
  • Agreed, there are plenty of medical problems that can cause impotence or lowered sex drive, and while sex is important it's not a dealbreaker if you're committed to the marriage you have and not some ideal of what intimacy means. Though if one partner is suffering from this and doesn't want to talk about it, I can see how…
  • I was seeing a chiropractor for my back and he has like 3 of them. Something about Russian cosmonauts use them for training or something. It was a bit like going over a cobblestone road on a skateboard, but I was doing stretches and PT with them, and at the end of every session my muscles felt looser and I left more…
  • I weigh 209 and started at 213.5. The scales here only have kg so I'm 95 kg  I'm trying to get down to 165 or so (75kg) but lets see how it goes. Send me a friend request, I'm looking for some friends to help me stay motivated. The hard part for me is staying committed to tracking my food. Just like every time I've…
  • I could eat large quantities of pizza every day. Fortunately the pizza where I live now in Europe is not that good, so I don't eat it very often. Cheese on the other hand, I could eat for every meal, every day. So now I restrict myself to a small amount of parmesan on my caesar salad and then on Friday night I enjoy as…
  • It sounds like you have been through the nightmare of all of us who move overseas to be with a significant other. You are doing great and I love that you have some goals to look forward to besides weight loss (I was stalking your profile). Good for you for hitting the gym and best wishes for finding a new job soon.
  • I am from the US but currently live in Finland. The only place I know of that offers free refills is Burger King, but I don't eat fast food that much. If anything, soft drinks are more expensive here, for example a large soda at McDonalds is 2,45€, or about $3.20. I rarely order soft drinks because they are so expensive.…
  • I don't know what to say except that you're an inspiration. Losing your dad, moving in with your mom, changing so many habits all at once - I salute you! You have some very good whys and I feel sure you'll meet your goals :)
  • Never be with a man who is always thinking of ways for you to improve in order for HIM to be happy. Never rely on a man to give you happiness and make your life complete. Never be with a man that you have to give up all your friends, school, hobbies, etc in order to be with him. Be happy with yourself. Know what YOU want…
  • I didn't see anyone minimizing your struggle with alcohol, especially since I didn't see you mention it upthread at all, so why you are using that to minimize someone else's struggle with food is frankly a bit beyond me. For some people, excessive eating is the same kind of problem as binge drinking, so I'm surprised that…
  • You can add me :) I have a goal of 22 kg (48,5 pounds) for now, but I really want to lose 25 kilos if I can.
  • My husband and I do exactly the same thing. It's our sauna night. So during the day we eat healthy, carefully within our calories, and then once work is over it's free time. I've actually found that I don't eat as much as I ever plan to eat. :) It juts helps keep me on track during the week knowing "I can eat that on…
  • I hear that. At my husband's grandmother's house, if she offers it, you eat it. And it's always good. Other than that, I do have cheat evening on Fridays, where I indulge in a special treat and dessert. But for the whole rest of the day I eat normally and within my calories. This is also because my husband is not on MFP or…
  • I have one cheat meal a week, and that's dinner after sauna on Friday. I eat whatever I want and however much I want. Since I eat a late dinner on Friday (10pm) there's not much time for me before bed to "be bad". So far it's working for me, and I'm losing 2 lbs a week. I know this doesn't work for everyone and if my…
