Been to Manhattan for a couple of short personal trips over the past few years. NYC is one of the world centers for great cuisine, so you can find almost anything you want there. We went with our kids so we didn't search out high cuisine, but you can find great food all over. Personally, I'd look for bagels, pizza, Chinese…

Walking is about 60 kcal per mile. 200 isn't bad for a modest pace.

I enjoy reading /loseit. There are some good nuggets to be found there. But the nuggets are buried within a lot of "I'm changing my life tomorrow" posts and NSV/SV types of posts. It also has kind of a "reddity-y" smug vibe which I don't always care for.

Mrs Jruzer doesn't do any intentional exercise. She does work at a fairly active job, which maybe earns her a few hundred more kcal per day. She's just very careful about portions, and keeps a close eye on her weight.

This is begging the question. The reason that very few people suggest eating spinach in moderation is much more likely to be that most people aren't prone to eating spinach in excess.

Oh yes, it's certainly less than coffee. I was just thinking of OP's comment that he "cut the umbilical cord" from caffeine, which to my mind implied a complete disconnect. But whatever's cool with me.

Doesn't green tea still have plenty of caffeine?

There are lots of things that you don't need to survive that aren't "bad for you". On the other hand, ruling out everything you don't need to survive would result in a pretty miserable existence. The world would be a sadder and darker place if we didn't have cake for birthday parties, and ice cream for hot summer days, and…

I am surprised and grateful that I didn't weight much more than I did. I was about 210 lbs at my heaviest, and considering how much I ate I'm grateful I wasn't 300 lbs or more.

I think it does. They do mention The Biggest Loser study in this article. Another confounding factor: this study examines individuals who are successfully maintaining their weight. What we don't know is how these individuals have changed over time. In other words, this is a snapshot, not a longitudinal study of individuals…

One more thing. Here's the reddit thread where I first saw this study discussed. There's some good discussion there as well. https://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/comments/b81r6r/study_exercise_is_more_critical_than_diet_to/

A figure from the study, showing PAEE, PAL (TDEE/REE), and steps for the three groups, with error bars. WLM=Weight Loss Management, NC=Normal Weight Control, OC=Overweight Control.
-
Two things to keep in mind: 1. Although the title says "exercise", what the study measured, on a sample of ~75 individuals in three groups, was TDEE. They used doubly-labeled water to measure TDEE, which is a gold standard technique that doesn't rely on self-reporting. TDEE can include intentional exercise such as running,…

@MikePTY, agreed it is kind of a click-baity title. I used the Science Daily article title as the topic of my post. The journal article is titled "Physical Activity Energy Expenditure and Total Daily Energy Expenditure in Successful Weight Loss Maintainers", which is more precise, to be sure. But where's the pizzaz in…
-
In reading the study, the answer is that the authors discriminated between TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) and PAEE (Physical Activity Energy Expenditure). The 300 refers to TDEE, while the 180 refers to PAEE. In looking at the data, it appears that the weight-loss group also has about 120 kcal/d higher REE than the…

Burgers on the grill with roasted vegetables. Plus my de rigeur grill beer. I don't care if the temperature is going to be in the low 40s F.

Thanks @xxxMADMAXxxx ! Will have to check out more Versailles! I'm making a list of new bands to explore.

Hams.

No, that is incorrect. If you're unsure about a value of something, it is also not accurate to assume that the value is 0.

Did you just assume our genders?

I think you're right, @KimberlyCapone . This was always my problem. I knew I had to lose weight, and I knew that meant I had to eat less and be more active. But I lacked a strategy - how much less to eat? How much more active to be? Lacking that strategy, I would vow to give up everything good to eat, get up early every…

It's my son's 19th birthday, so we're going out for dinner at his choice of venue.

Been on a Dream Theater kick lately. Listening to Scenes from a Memory because they're playing it in it's entirety on their 2019 tour. Strange Deja Vu: https://youtu.be/J0PQ6GC6KYc

An Irishman walks into a bar and orders three beers. The bartender gives him a strange look, but serves him his drinks. The Irishman takes them to a booth, clinks them together, and drinks them all. He then goes back to the bartender and orders another three beers, which he proceeds to drink in the same fashion. On his…

We've got 4, and they're the best things that have ever happened to Mrs Jruzer and me.
