There are plenty of books published by long-distance runners that are plant-based. I've been vegetarian since 2006 and vegan (whole food/plant-based) since 2012. IMO it gives me the advantage on faster recovery and understanding how the body responds to nutrients. There are a lot of plant based athletes on MFP. It would be…

I meant to reply to this thread once again to comment that long runs make me feel the opposite. I also feel like that might be due to extreme heat/humidity conditions. For example, last Saturday I had a 18 mile run and I didn't feel much like eating afterwards (forced some fruit and a bar though). I used to have similar…

I wear them on runs 15+ miles. I usually keep them on for a while afterwards also. I recently bought a pair of all-in-one socks/ankle compression since my right ankle is sometimes tender on longer runs. To tell the truth, I don't notice much difference in my calves when using the full sleeves or not.

Hit me up with a friend request, I'm always posting non-dairy/plant based smoothies--specifically for post-long runs (or rides). Here are two of my favorites lately: Stu's Dreamy Mocha Protein Smoothie 1.5 cup almond milk 4oz Cool Brew Iced Coffee Original (concentrate found at my grocery in the dairy section) 2 ripe…

No fair--you fellas need to post pics "wearing" those kits!!!

Plan your routes where you can obtain water (either purchased at a store or somewhere you can refill your bottles). It gets hot as the sun here in the swamps of south Louisiana. I've been known to kill as many as 8 to 10 bottles on long rides. At most I'll have 3 bottles (2 on the bike and one in the jersey pocket). But…

Yeah. Probably categorized more retro I suppose.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call this is "hideous" as much as it is "old school" and before I had any real say so in the spirit of cycling fashion. All I had was my dad's hand-me-downs. Circa '90, military school cycling team (I'm on the top right beside the guy in uniform),

Great idea! I have something--just have to figure out how to post a photo...

Speaking of NOLA law--a buddy of mine was a messenger after Katrina and was stuck in the city when things got bad afterwards. Some crooks were trying to get into his place and he was able to fight them off. Ended up finding up a cop on the street and upon telling him about it, the cop suggested stealing a car to get out of…

A law is not a law in New Orleans (especially when most police don't even know we have 3-foot law for passing). No such thing as jaywalking around here. I've been hit by a car once in my 20+ years of cycling, and the dude that hit me paid my medical fees in full (and paid for a new bike). Least he could do since he ran a…

Well, I'm not a "woman" but here is my $0.02--I don't consume any tofu and the only technically "fake meat" I eat is tempeh (I use it salads, pitas, etc. It mixes well with other legumes and humus as well. Of all the soy-type products tempeh is the only one that I find beneficial (low in fat/sodium and high in…

I disagree. If it is safer for the cyclist to cross a intersection during red then he or she should do so. I'm not advocating blind disregard to the light and laws; however, there are sometimes when waiting for a green light is more hazardous to cross a intersection with traffic then when it is totally clear and other…

I look forward to Sherman's "very precarious..." comments. ;-)

What are you eating after your long run? I'm putting in 50 miles or so week and I don't find I am any hungrier than normal. I do eat every 3 hours and consume A LOT of fruit which gives me great fuel. Reviewing your current diet might also be worthwhile--to insure you are getting the necessary macros daily (depending on…

This. I always have a recovery run day after a long run. In the coming weeks I will be stacking long runs back-to-back (which is great for building stronger endurance for long distance, in my case training for an ultra). My main problem is taking an actual rest day the day before (as my 1st love is cycling and I usually…

I run in the Louisiana swamp--high temps & near 100% humidity daily. I am currently running 50ish miles per week in anticipation of training for a 50-mile ultra in Nov. To tell the truth, I dread training in this weather over summer than the actual race (which will be in Nashville). As others said, it's all about…

Think of it as a Facebook for athletes. And I find it much more helpful than FB hypocrisy. I'd add along with the others who previous stated--challenges and seeing how you stack up on segments WILL make you a better rider. I wasn't sure how I would stack up on Strava in comparison with others (not that I care so much, but…

Sorry about that! ;-) I wasn't aware we had some ladies in the British hood also. So I'll rephrase to "I hope all of you will share..."

I hope you fellas will share some photos here or IG (if you partake). Would love to see your POV of the le Tour. And I'd agree--watching on the TV might be the best coverage, but this is the chance of a lifetime to see it pass in front of you live. If I were there, I think I'd try to get a glimpse once or twice per day if…

This. The other day some driver yelled at me "You have rules to follow a**hole!" after he caught up to me at the next light (after I went through the previous red). I always slow and/or stop at intersections and I will pick the safest moment to cross red or not. I believe moving with cars when a light first turns green is…

I think this issue is getting resolved. Today my run was posted to MFP (as a ride before I changed the activity type to running). So it appears everything is getting posted over. I suppose it's best to have both tabs up when you upload to Strava to check to see if the details are correct (i.e. mine posted as a ride so I…

I use a Chrome bag for my commuting. You can fit a lot of junk in there (also depending on the size you get, I have the Metropolis). It's super comfy while I am cycling to work and I also use it as my go-to travel bag when I am flying, etc. It will make your back hot on summer days--of course I haven't found any bag that…

I'd say the organizer of the ride if it is classified as such. If I usually organize a "no drop" ride I make it my responsibility that everyone stays together. Typically I find one of the slower riders and stick them in the middle to make sure they are comfy--all else should work out.

You wore a Coast Guard shirt to a Navy race??? Being a Navy vet myself, I take offense!!! J/k ;-) Cool event and good idea for a thread. PS - A Star Wars half is a rad idea!!!

No need in repeating what everyone else said already. I enjoyed this challenge much more so than the Strava ones I have participated in the past. In particular, it was great meeting/riding with/competing along side other riders and as a result several of you have become people I quite enjoy conversing with on a daily…

My ride synced yesterday even upon a name change. Today's run (where I change the activity upon the upload) did not sync. So I manually updated it. I'm using a Garmin 500.

Because it makes me feel like a superhero, maybe I am ;-)

Yep. I use it as a model sometimes. Granted my high mileage weeks only typically last 2 or 3, but I do ramp up my calorie intake somewhat to the 3,000+ level to sustain. Anyone who is fairly active could learn something from the extreme ends of the spectrum. In my case it has to be systematically approached since I eat…
