Personal trainer here. 1). Muscle does not weigh more than fat. A pound is a pound is a pound. Muscle is more dense so it takes up much less space. 2). Lifting weights increases your BMR which increases the amount of calories you burn in a day. You want this as you are losing muscle while you age. 3). You are majorly…

Yep. Everyone has a dominate side which is stronger because you tend to use those muscles more. Were you doing each leg individually or doing a machine that uses both at the same time? My guess is you were doing both at the same time and pushing more with your dominate side. Thus more soreness on that calf. Next time, try…

Do you have a set of dumbbells? You can do all upper body weight lifting as well as abs with crunches, reverse crunches... You could also do leg extensions contracting your quads thus working legs. It may not be your normal routine, but sometimes it is nice to shake things up a bit even if it is unintentional. Making…

Noticeable improvement!! Look at your stomach (getting smaller) and your chest (getting pecs). Keep up the good fight and you will get there. It's not easy, but if it were, we would all be on the cover of a fitness mag!! Lol

Have you guys tried taking cottage cheese, a packet of dry ranch dressing, and whirling it in a blender? Thin it with a bit of Soy milk or water if necessary. It's good!! Other than that I use Bolthouse dressings

Actually, I am a broette. Lol. You will be fine. Again, just modify some exercises (especially those that target low back and some ab exercises). Use good form on the others. It should heal pretty quickly as long as you don't push it too hard. What did your doctor recommend? They know body parts but not much about exercise…

Hi, I am a personal trainer with extensive training on injuries. If you have a muscle spasm, the first thing you need to do is place hot/cold packs on the area of pain. 20 minutes on 20 minutes off then alternate to the other pack and do the same. Be sure you have a cloth or towel between your back and the packs so as not…

Throw a box in the back of the freezer. When summer rolls around and you are going to a BBQ, pull the box out and make a vanilla based ice cream in your ice cream maker. Add some mint extract, and in the last few minutes, add crumbled frozen cookies. Have a scoop or two and let everyone else enjoy the rest. Yum!!

OMG Cafe Dumonde. Beignets and chickory coffee!!! Ya gotta go!! Okay, now that I have wiped the drool off my chin, I second the advise on only splurging for the food you really love. Keep a check on your stomach and stop eating when your are satisfied. Walk as much as possible or use the hotel gym. Most importantly, enjoy…

I have never used it so I cannot speak for the nutritional value. it seems that if it is whole wheat and you are not using that much (only as a filler for the meatloaf) it should be fine. If you have issues with sodium, you may want to look at that. Enjoy your meatloaf!

So I don't want to open the weigh or not to weigh debate. Everyone has their own opinion on what works for them. I personally, do not weigh myself but every 2-3 months because the weight fluctuations freak me out. I am great with the weight loss but when the scale shows a gain and I know I have been doing everything…

What about your bike? It would be great exercise and would not irritate your Achilles. You do not want to do any form of exercise that involves flexion and extension of the foot. So swimming and bike riding are your only choices unless you belong to a gym. If that is the case, you can add rowing or a Nustep to the mix as…

Okay, take a deep breath and and let's figure this out. Do you get an hour for lunch? If so, do you have a place you can walk? Or do you have a lot of stairs you can climb in your building? If so, bring sneakers to work, eat lunch for 30 minutes and walk/climb stairs for the other 30. If neither of these are possible, then…

Count me in! We have chickens and there is nothing better than collecting and then cooking fresh eggs. Alas, I am not the only one that likes fresh eggs. It seems we have a black snake that loves them also. Ha ha. I found a great recipe for egg salad using cottage cheese instead of mayonnaise. Mix one whole egg and the…

Well the heavier you are, the more insulation, therefore more sweat. As you lose weight, you will sweat less because there is not so much insulation keeping you warm. But I also know of many thin girls that sweat like a monster. There is really no way to tell if you are a sweater or not. Just bring a towel and enjoy the…

Yep, first step is to rule out any health concerns, so check with your doctor. Heart rate charts are generic and are not always accurate for everyone. The best indicator of how healthy you are cardiovascular wise is your resting heart rate. The stronger your heart, the lower your resting heart rate. Google Karvonen…

Hi Glad to see you here. This is a great site for logging food and motivational support. So Welcome!! I am a personal trainer and I see this every day. If you don't mind my advice, I think I may be able to help. I do have some questions for you though: How may days per week are you exercising and how many minutes per…

Hi Heel spurs occur when calcium deposits build up under the heel bone. The calcium buildup is caused by a variety of things, high impact activity, poorly fitting/worn out shoes, obesity, flat feet, high arches, etc. There is no special diet or vitamin that will make it go away. However, there are some things you can do…

Hi!! Just like Scott said-weekends are tough. And I feel he is absolutely right about planning, planning, planning. I do so much better if I get up think about the day and log my whole meal plan while I am drinking my coffee. If I am going to dinner, I look at the restaurants menu and log all the nutrition data too. No…

Hi Guys, Well so far so good weather wise here. No rain but just some high wind. Never made it for my walk yesterday because I was too busy battoning down the hatches. I live in the boonies as we say down south, with lots of animals. Chickens, dogs, cats, bees, goats, llamas, etc. When the weather gets bad, you have to…

I'm with ya!! I was doing great, fell off a pair of high heels, and tore my peroneal tendon and two ligaments in my foot. Stupid high heels!! LOL. Flash forward to three months later and 8 pounds heavier. Ugh. I started tracking this past Sunday and am headed out the door for a short walk. It may be a very short one, as I…

It is absolutely the pain killers. I am married to a surgeon, and he always tells his patients to drink lots of water and try to take as few pain pills as possible. He will also bring them dried fruit as a present and tells them to eat it for fiber. If you get impacted (can't poop) you will have to try enemas. If that does…

Bolthouse Farms Caesar Parmigiano yogurt dressing. 45 cal / 2 Tbsp. Really good stuff!!! You can also mix it with salsa if you like a "wet" salad and save some calories. Bolthouse Farms also makes a Ranch and Blue Cheese. You can find it in the refrigerated section near the lettuce.
