this is what I do....I will only push myself really hard on a few races a year that I believe I can PR on. Outside of that it is a run for training and camaraderie.

Ran the Minneapolis Marathon....pacing for a friend who wanted a sub 4 hour finish. 3:58:26! Very pleased that I could get in so close to the mark!

I use runkeeper, but as stated above, I think the accuracy is questionable if your in a confined area such as a driveway. If it is that important, I would take a tape measure to your driveway and count laps.

my pre-workout meal for a run or race is typically a slice of wheat bread with a tablespoon of peanut butter. But I have been known to run on an empty stomach too. If what you are doing is working, I wouldn't necessarily change it unless you are feeling completely drained early in your workout.

I don't think you should look externally to set a goal, instead pick a "high" goal and a "secondary" goal. If you make the high one, great, if not accept what you made, hopefully the secondary goal and continue working towards the ultimate goal.
