Going to have to wear arm warmers and tights made of this stuff year round. Knowing the inventive ways I manage to injure myself maybe on the ears too!

A fantastic day for the UT Vols! We're still climbing out of a deep hole, but assembling the talent for a return.

30 degrees, no question (assuming no ice or other such hazards). I'm prone to overheat when running, I just can't transfer the heat, especially if it's humid. About 40 degrees is perfect for me. The other morning I ran at 15 degrees and was shedding my wool mittens, running jacket, and a core layer withing fifteen minutes.…

No need to choose, do both, but the key is finding something you enjoy. The case for lifting has been made so I won't bother except to agree with the benefits and second the recommendations for the Starting Strength and New Rules of Lifting books. But cardio is very beneficial and heart healthy. Cardiologist always…

I was listening to a brain specialist on NPR the other day who said the brain needs carbs and everyone should start the day with a few carbs to insure proper brain function. But, she said about sixty calories worth were sufficient to get the brain functioning properly after a night of sleep, so we're not talking much here.…

I don't think that people mean to imply that you are not fit, but this is posted in a general forum which will be read by people of varying fitness levels, and when talking about stressing the heart caution should abound. You really do need advice from a medical professional; all the talk about numbers is purely…

It is a shame to see the CDC still propagating this formula. It has been widely discredited by many high quality peer-reviewed studies. I agree that one should not believe some random poster here at MFP, including me, but do some research, look up the studies. I am sorely disappointed to see the CDC using assumptions from…

You really need medical advice as to what hr is sustainable for you. For people that are not fit a high heart rate can be extremely dangerous. That said, many people who are fit and have a track record of sustaining a high hr with no problems routinely train above at or above 90% max hr. I use a heart rate monitor during…

Congratulations on your progress so far, you're doing great! I did c25k several years ago - back before apps or even smartphones, and I struggled and had to restart many times. I had shin splints and assorted issues, but I kept coming back until I completed it (and the 10k program too). Remember, It's not necessary to run…

Yeah, I caught that too. But spend some time on the site, it is very good overall. Nobody's perfect!

Scooby's workshop! (scoobysworkshop.com) A fantastic online resource with workout programs including links to Youtube videos demonstrating proper form, plus nutrition info, fitness tools and calculators, exposure of fitness gimmicks, recommended books, etc. He is a body builder and triathlete so no bashing of cardio or…

This. I have used most all of the apps and have run several concurrently. None stands out as more accurate than the others over time. I trail run and mountain bike which is very challenging to gps due to tree coverage. The GPS/Hrm watches are most accurate, but even they fail due to heavy clouds or foliage. Nothing is…

Sounds good to me!

This is too funny! The here advice ranges from run faster to stop running. Well, most of my runs are on trails in the woods, so the only dogs that chase me are the two I take with me. But I am chased virtually every bike ride, usually by several different dogs, and I do occasionally run on the road and encounter dogs as…

Here's a link to an MFP discussion of why a hrm is only accurate for steady state aerobic exercise. An accurate calorie burn is dependent not only on heart rate, but on VO2, and the relationship between the two. A hrm will not be accurate for all day measuring or for activities that do not elevate the heart rate and VO2…

Understand, but my point is that building up means a lot of riding, and that is the fun part! Not really a big fan of the song, but the title applies, "Hurts so Good". Hopefully road biking and trail running is keeping me in reasonable shape to mountain bike. If the trails dry up we'll find out soon.

You know the correct response to that choice. Building up is the fun part!

I use an Excel spreadsheet to log daily calories in/out, compute total weekly calories, compute a daily average over the week, and log weekly weight. This gives me a pretty good grip on what works for me and what does not. I tend to go over my goal intake calories on rest days, break even on lower intensity workout days,…

In June 2012, I hit a dog while doing 20 mph, and hit my head at 20 plus whatever force was added as I whipped straight down to the pavement. It was a head on t-bone collision as I was watching two other dogs chasing me and didn't see the one run out from the side. Apparently he was laying in wait for me. I tell people it…

I completely agree that breakfast does not kickstart one's metabolism as is often claimed, but there are other reasons to start off the day with at least some food. I recently read a scientific study of the brain (not a nutrition or fitness study) that said (in part) the brain requires energy to function and everyone…

I was number 182! That translated as "pack your bags" at the time.

You might be old if... 1. The last live rock concert you went to was Led Zeppelin. This was after seeing Steppenwolf and Grand Funk Railroad. 2. You think rap music is just a passing fad.

The Giant Avail's have scored well in Bicycling Magazine's comparison tests. The Avail Advance 1 was selected as the overall best women's specific bike in the Classic (endurance) category and the Avail 1 was highly rated among the more entry level bikes, though I can't remember if it took first place. The Defy's always do…

For me this misses the whole point of what many find boring about lifting. Neither intensity nor results make lifting less boring to me because I crave being outdoors while exercising. I especially enjoy being in the woods: mountain biking, trail running, hiking, kayaking, etc, They are not boring because I enjoy the…
