Steppenwolf in 1969. Then Led Zeppelin next. Those were the days!

I mountain bike more. Here in the Southeast I can mtb year round and cold weather is my favorite time. The trees provide wind cover and we get very little snow or ice. I also run more. I can still get in an occasional road bike ride, but I am averse to indoor training, though I'm sure I'd have to change that if I lived in…

Congrats, that's a win! I started mountain biking in 1985, and trust me, I've had more than my fair share of crashes. To a large degree, it just goes with the territory. But it's so fun it's worth the risks. One cautionary word though: as I am now 62, I have recently learned that all the cumulative crashes over the years…

This thread is like the tv run, too short!

True. There are many post here at MFP about hrm's and calorie burn deficiencies. I wish I had links to post but they can be found by searching. HRM's don't measure calories burned, but approximate them based on heart rate, which is only close in very limited situations, so they simply are not as accurate as many people…

Nice when science and logic agree!

I'm currently using a Samsung S5. The waterproof (resistant, I guess) feature is great for me as I carry it in my pocket while running and cycling. I prefer the size and weight of the S4, but the water proofing seals the deal for me. My wife has an S4, she previously had an iPhone. She prefers the Android. I went with the…

Another perspective: Mine disappeared when I lost weight, and my doctor said that is quite common. I eat, and have always eaten, spicy foods, breads, carbs, etc. I have never restricted any food group and lost weigh by cutting calories and lost the acid reflux by losing weight.

Harvard recently did a study on protein, in it they found that double the U.S. RDA yielded great benefit in muscle growth, but going above that yielded very little additional benefit (they went up to 3x RDA). This would equate to less than the customary rule of thumb prescribed in the lifting community, but ...science.…

I'm at 1216 (no reset); I have two friends with bigger numbers than I have, and one of them has friends with even bigger numbers. I'd like to know the current MFP leader!

I am currently using a gps/hrm, so no app, but I have used and liked Runkeeper in the past. Another one to consider is Sportstracker. They are currently advertising audio cues and what they call Ghost Target, you pick a pace and it displays a ghost figure on the map showing where you are compared to it, behind or ahead of…

Google over training syndrome, you will find a wealth of material. It's something that coaches of elite level athletes deal with frequently, though people at all levels may experience. If one wants to call it under recovery, fine, but that's not what it is called in the medical community. I have several books on training…

I'm just not buying all the warnings. I switched from regular soda to diet soda over six years ago, along with many other diet and exercise changes, and lost 55 lbs in a few months. The weight is still off and I continue to drink diet soda daily (and eat a ton of carbs too, btw). I keep a close eye on caloric intake but…

I guess I'll be following the live updates from Cycling News and Velo News. It can actually get pretty exciting, I've been known to stand and shout, to the amusement of my co-workers.

I'm a huge believer in 25"s. They are so much more comfortable and corner great. The last time I ruined a set the lbs only had 23's in stock so I bough the Conti 4000s in 23. I know many people love them, but I hated them. Michelin Pro series 25's forever! BTW, the tech geeks at Velo News printed a few articles claiming…

They love constructions zones, to no ones surprise. I had four flats on one ride years ago. Should have just walked and carried the bike, I guess. Live and learn.

Congrats, my friend! Be glad you got on top of this while you are still young (very young, compared to me!). Just imagine how hard it would be if you waited a couple of decades to begin your health and fitness odyssey. You took the bull by the horns and showed who's boss! Now just stay on top of it and enjoy your long…

Congratulations on your ride! Cycling is great cross training for running, a nice low impact way to improve overall fitness. Each will improve the the aerobic system and strengthen the leg muscles in a different way, a win all around! As with running, it will take some time to ramp up your skill and ability, but since you…

I'm at six years and counting of successful weight loss, so I guess I'm in the five percent, and I will stay there. I did regain a few pounds after about about 18 months, but realized what was happening and got that back off, and now I'm cruising. I lost 55 lbs and that is where I remain, at 160 lbs (5'9"). A lot of people…

If a rowing machine doesn't bother the bursitis this is a great idea. I used to love my rower for days when I couldn't get outside. Sadly, my wife relegated it to the deck and it rusted out, in spite of being covered.

Just to bring the other side here, the last person who told me "I just want to be friends" married me 16 years ago. I'm just saying...

I started with Scooby, and checked several others, all seemed a little high for me. I personally prefer heybales spreadsheet here at MFP since it offers much more information and alternative methods, but to me, it's all still just a starting point. Personal trial and error reigns supreme! I've been on MFP over three years…

Haha, I weigh daily because the weekly fluctuations mess with my mind, lol. Seriously, weighing daily allows me to know the trend, if it's going in the right direction over the course of a few days I'm happy.

Just checked their website and they have two other low drop shoes that are not minimalist, the Bushido and the Anakonda. I think both have the sticky "FriXion" sole as well.

I love the La Sportiva Wildcats, very grippy, but not enough drop for you. The minimalist women's La Sportiva Helios shoes with 4mm drop get great reviews. La Sportiva is known for their approach shoes and they use their sticky climbing "FriXion" formula on many of their mountain running shoes, including the Helios. I've…

Like most of the rest here, I log the workout time and a one calorie burn. I log here because enjoy the feedback from friends and like to track the workouts at MFP, even though I also log them at Training Peaks through my HRM/GPS. I also log them in Excel. Maybe I'm a bit compulsive, lol. My defense is that each has it's…

It offers timed or distance options, so you can just select the timed option. It won't be able to give you pace, speed, and distance info, but you can get that from the treadmill.

Do you have a pair of your old shoes that you previously ran in? I'd try them, just for one short run, to see if the pain persist in them. (Not recommending running in old shoes, just a test run!) If you have pain with the old shoes I'd see a podiatrist. Commercial inserts (Sole, Superfeet, etc.) might fix it in the new…

I lost 55 lbs eating a ton of carbs. As others have pointed out, it's just not necessary to eliminate or severely restrict any food group to lose weight, just maintain a caloric deficit. I am currently eating about 2,000 calories a day (TDEE method), averaging about 47% carbs, 26% protein, and 27% fat, and losing weight at…
