  • Why do you guys all run into the coolest people? So young and sexy. My run ins; Grandpa Jones from Hee Haw and Don Knotts (Barney Fife) from The Andy Griffith Show.
  • Hi sword, thanks! Man that thing looks stiff!
  • I'm riding in Pearl Izumi Elite shorts with excellent chamois. I don't really know if the Avatar fits me properly since it is just what came on the bike. My mtb has a WTB Speed V saddle that is great (but seems that it would be too bulky for a road bike.)
  • I should add that the Specialized Avatar 143 that came on the bike caused numbness in my right leg after 25 miles or so. I'm currently using a Forte that isn't great but at least doesn't cause numbness
  • You asked about road riding so this is slightly off topic but I see that you are a mountain biker too. Have you tried Jackrabbit (just 5 miles north of Hiawassee in NC) and Paynes Creek (between Lavonia and Hartwell here in GA)? Both are fabulous! Jackrabbit has about 15 miles of singletrack and Paynes Creek has 7 with 3…
  • Count me in as another one that frezzes! It's funny, I walk into the house and think that my wife has the heat set way too high, but after I cool down I start freezing. Then when I shower I have to seriously fight myself to leave some hot water for my wife. Dang that hot water feels good!
  • Carbs are fuel for the body's engine! The body needs carbs to perform at it's peak. It certainly is smart to get carbs from good sources like vegetables and whole grains, but carbs are great! You won't find any pro/eleite athletes who go low carb, shoot, they carbo load for races. I was at 60% carbs for years and did very…
  • This is where it gets sticky. Someone define obsession as a place to start. I'm not a mental health expert so I won't try. It certainly seems that if it reaches the point where it takes over ones life it may well be a problem. But my local friends think that logging all of my food and exercise is obsessing. I beg to…
  • I agree with the previous comments on eating well and listening to your body. If you are going to push it on the runs the two activities need to be separated, or you could go very easy on the runs and use them as part of the warm up. I'm more of a cardio guy so I could never give up running but it can fit nicely with P90X.…
  • I find that I can run at a faster pace on the treadmill but I far prefer to run outdoors. And best of all is trail running! And as for weather, that is one of the joys of running outdoors. I love running in the cooler temps and running in light rain is fine, though I avoid thunderstorms for safety purposes. As many have…
  • Didn't bother quoting the previous discussion since the quotes get so long... But, are you really saying that no runner or cyclist builds leg muscle by cardio alone? They only build leg muscle by doing strength training? That is so clearly wrong and easily disproven that I assume we must be missing each others point…
  • Yes, I have been a cyclist since the early eighties and I'm quite familiar with pro cyclists training routines. However, the point I disagree on is saying that one cannot build muscle through cardio. So ignore the pro cyclists training or whatever and just look at the thousands of runners and cyclists that do no strength…
  • Active rest is the best rest! A walk, slow bike ride, or similar promotes healing and rejuvenation for tired muscles through oxygenation and other benefits. There are lots of studies to be found that demonstrate this. Google active rest and you will find pages and pages of articles and studies.
  • I tend to try to push through and get some exercise in, but honestly I believe it is better to rest and let the body use the energy for healing.
  • La Banderita whole wheat is only 40 cals, but I don't know how they would do for an enchilada. I use them daily for breakfast and snacks.
  • I had no idea that trainers had to sign a code forbidding giving nutritional advice. Personally, I think of a trainer as someone dedicated to fitness and health and therefore more knowledgeable than I am in all areas related to those topics. I certainly know that trainers are not nutritionist, but by virtue of their chosen…
  • I only began to enjoy running when I started trail runnng. I just love the soft dirt and the trees and the forest smells! But I know that's not everyones joy. But it's worth checking out!
  • This question posted after a Body Fortress recommendation. Assuming the question is for BF, I'm looking at vanilla right now. 140 Cal 1 sugar 3 carbs 26 protein 2 total fat
  • Agree on the importance of endurance training. A good diet is essential, HIIT is valuable, lifting is necessary, but endurance training is too often overlooked as a crucial component of getting rid of weight/fat.
  • If you have a smartphone you can download one of the free apps that use the phones GPS (I use Runkeeper). It gives my pace, distance, speed, audibly as I run or ride and I upload all the info to their website where I can view all the GPS stuff - map, chart of my speed, topography, etc. It’s great and free! Oh, and it gives…
  • The temps here have been great for mountain biking but we have gotten too much rain! We need the rain but it only rains on days when I can ride! (Some of the local trails close when wet due to erosion issues.) Back in the nineties I rode a lot but I kind of missed the 2,000’s (got married.) In August of 2011 I bought a…
  • I have an Android phone and use the free Runkeeper app. It tracks time, distance, splits, speed, etc. and gives you audible feedback while running. It also uploads to their website giving you all the stats and a map of your run with pace and elevation for the whole run. You can also share data with friends (street team)…
  • I agree with the others that lower body workouts are very beneficial - over time. In the short term they can cause soreness and adversely impact running the next day, but they really help long term so are highly recommended. I also cycle on alternate days with running. I read that cycling and running are perfect…
  • [/quote] "Intonation via text is as difficult as ever. The first sentence was an intentionally over-dramatic build up to my concluding statement, intended for semi-comedic effect. Cyclists aren't that badly treated here in London with the drive from the London Mayor and local governments encouraging it, so it's a shame to…
  • That is evident. I don't know who accused you of breaking the law, I did not. I did say that you should follow the law, meaning specifically understanding and accepting that the law requires cyclist to operate their bike as a vehicle and obey the rules of the road and for motorist to recognize the cyclist is right to do…
  • I live in a rural area with no sidewalks so by this logic all pedestrians using the roads should pay road taxes and wear plates, lol. The point of fees and road taxes is to pay for the damage caused by the vehicles - that is why heavy trucks pay larger fees. Bikes cause no damage to road surfaces and therefore pay no fee…
  • I see you live in England and maybe the laws are different there, but each of the four US states that I have lived in consider bicycles vehicles and they are required by law to operate as vehicles by riding in the road and following all driving laws and regulations. As a cyclist my pet peeve is drivers who pass me with a…
  • No, the doctor gave bad advice based on false assumptions. You can't burn 400 to 900 calories in a day unless you are young or very athletic? No md required, that is patently false! I am surrounded by friends who disprove that daily as do I. That is plain ignorance and is offensive to the dedicated folks who are out there…
