  • I've never liked moo juice on its own, only in coffee/tea and cereal. Plain unsweetened almond milk can take a little getting used to in coffee but I prefer it now. And in cereal it's perfect. The vanilla unsweetened is good too. Never tried any of the sweetened kinds myself.
  • Haven't had time to make lunches ahead lately. Today was a pack of Tasty Bite "Jodhpur Lentils" and some pita bread. Seriously tasty.
  • If you want to incorporate more vegetation, maybe start firing up the grill. I live in the South too, and in my experience even the most old-school meat-and-taters people will eat vegetables if they're cooked over a raging-hot fire. Next to meat, of course. It's a caveman thing.
  • Personally I wouldn't rely on pre-packaged meat substitutes. It's really hard to make vegetable products taste like meat. I rely pretty heavily on beans, lentils, rice, corn, pasta, root vegetables, squash, broccoli and greens.
  • Terminally single.
  • I'm a vegetarian, making some effort toward vegan (eventually). I get bored with food easily and come up with new stuff. If I had friends on here to read it I'd probably post and share more. So, let's make it happen.
  • 113 and counting, without surgery. It takes a while but it's doable. And now so am I. :) Bazinga.
  • Somehow I neglected to post in here. Hi y'all. I'm Sean. Currently in OKC but originally from the 918. Been at this for a minute and almost to goal. Not exercising enough, which is probably the next phase, but I'm busy with work and classes and stuff. Also newly vegetarian. (Don't start...)
  • I've come too far to go back now.
  • This. A friend of a friend is now bigger than I was at my biggest, hadn't seen me since before I started dropping, then saw me at -100 pounds. He's notorious for his bad eating habits... actually got angry at the presence of vegetables on burgers and pizza. But he spontaneously reached out to me for tips and advice after…
  • Do you have it set for 1 lb/week weight loss, or something higher? You could try changing your goal to slower weight loss, even just temporarily. I eased myself down and it's worked so far. Just a thought, I'm not a nutritionist, but your hunger might be related to nutrient requirements. Might be you're not getting enough…
  • Depending on your area there may be some other... "alternative" root vegetables you could try. There's a hispanic grocery store not far from my apartment that keeps yuca, two or three varieties of sweet potato, jicama and some others I haven't tried yet. Plantains are getting more common now too, since they're a type of…
  • I'm sure this will fail to get the thread back on topic, but I'm going to give it a shot... Since I've gone mostly-veg my carbs have been a little on the high side but I do manage to stay within the MFP target for the most part. It just becomes more important to find healthy food that's higher in one or both of the other…
  • I guess I'd call myself "flexitarian" if I didn't hate newly-invented words. I hardly ever eat meat and try not to overdo it on the dairy. Try is the operative word. As far as vitamins, once you start eating more fresh vegetables and fruits you almost automatically do better on vitamin/mineral intake. I still take a multi…
  • Sweet potatoes. Almonds (and almond milk). Roasted pumpkin seeds. Fresh tomatoes... not the ones from the store, they're picked too early and don't taste right, buy em from the farmer's market. You could raise yourself but I know I don't have that kind of time. So, okay, that's four. I'm overachieving.
  • Food has calories. No calories = not really food.
  • I'm of the "one mountain a day" camp... I used these to help break my "cheeseburger and fries" lunch habits so the sodium was actually the same or maybe lower than what I was eating. Later I realized I was paying anywhere from 2 to 4 bucks for 40 cents worth of pasta and sauce, and started making my own in big batches that…
  • Trade in the 550's for 514's, the slim-straight. Not hipster-style skinny jeans, but closer fitting than the loose jeans. Good middle ground.
  • FYI, the argument about lentils, beans, etc. being "incomplete" is... well... incomplete. Most legumes have all the essential amino acids, though some are a bit low in one or another relative to nutritional needs. Lentils fall a bit short on methionine and cysteine. But at 25% or more protein versus under 20% for other…
  • This is how I start a few different recipes. I'll make tacos with it, with chili powder and cumin in the potato seasoning plus black bean (or ground turkey) taco filling. Yesterday I started with sweet potatoes like this, topped with sauteed peppers, onions and tomatoes, then an egg over easy on top.
  • Pumpkin seeds, in the shell. Out of the shell they're okay but I like em whole. Of course they're crazy salty so if sodium is a worry, not a good option. Also Clif bars. If I forget to bring my lunch or get pressed for time and can't stop somewhere for dinner, one of those gets me by for a few hours.
  • Maybe double up on the oatmeal... usually only 150 cals for 1/2 cup dry, regular serving... When I wind up way behind on calories for the day, I don't try to make it all up at the end, just get myself far enough above 1200 so my metabolism doesn't do anything crazy and make part of the rest up the next day. Nuts are good…
  • Thinly sliced peppers and onions, with some noodles and peanut sauce. As long as you go light on the peanut butter in the sauce it's not a calorie bomb. It's good warm, better cold. Or, simpler, small-diced in scrambled eggs.
  • One more vote for Valentina here. But I do like Cholula over Tapatio.
  • Black bean and sweet potato tacos. There are different ways to do it but my favorite is to roast the cubed/chunked potatoes with a little olive oil, garlic, cumin and cayenne/chili powder at 350 for about 40 minutes. You may have to stir or rotate the cookie sheet once, depending on your oven. Then in a heavy skillet: cook…
  • I use them as a straight drop-in replacement for ground beef in casseroles (i.e. Shepherd's Pie), soups and stews (great for chili), and tacos. Usually 1 cup dry (about 2-3 cups cooked) to 1 pound of beef. They don't have a lot of flavor on their own so sometimes I use a jarred soup base made from yeast extract to give a…
  • Slow and steady wins the race. It's fun to see the weight melt off, and my first few weeks it was like that for me. But then they say your body adjusts. Personally, I wasn't overly restricting my calories, but was working out pretty hard (for me). Dropped about 4 pounds a week for a month, maybe a month and a half. Then it…
  • Turnips. I've recently discovered turnips. Maybe not everyone's thing but I can't get enough. Sort of potato-ey (potatoes are a New World crop; most old-time European dishes that call for potatoes originally called for turnips) but with a little bit of horseradish bite. Steamed with or without their greens, boiled/steamed…
  • There's a nutrition calculator at the bottom of the page here: http://www.redrobin.com/food/ Simple grilled chicken and the garden burger are probably the best options. Salmon sandwich, turkey burger and "keep it simple" regular burger are under 600 too. Looks like they should have some steamed veg available as a side.
  • Oops, posted something to the wrong topic... But I'm with the runner. I'm going make it up ahead of time, and probably the day after too. Bring on the potatoes and beer.
