You have to think in terms of specificity of training if you want to be your best for the marathon, and that involves running roads. That said, if it is a choice between running on a treadmill and not running, you're better off on a treadmill. The only case I know of a treadmill runner being really awesome on race day is a…

I haven't gone past 75mi but I've never lost a toenail- even on the canyon section of the western states trail, which had 7k of gain and (more importantly) 11k of loss over a period of 32miles. I would highly recommend "fixing your feet" by Jon Vonhof. It's amazing what properly fitted and laced shoes combined with…

Length of run is definitely in play here. For shorter runs I use the liner with my skirt/shorts. For anything over 20mi I generally wear compression shorts or capris. The seam in the crotch is no bueno. First I tried a thong- great for anything up to about a 50k but use the restroom and my panties literally get in a twist.…

Damn. I thought this was one of those surveys where you find out what marathon you are. Don't mind me; I've got the taper crazies.

Keys 100, salt flats, C&O 100 (near me in April if you're looking for a pacer- I paced a guy there this year for his first 100.) The only issue is the climb up to the manidokan campground. Course is two loops on the canal (super flat) but you literally climb up (ropes in place to hold into) to the campground just after…

Thanks for posting, likitisplit! Silverton ---> Telluride = Flat....bwahahahahaha!

Heartbreak hill doesn't seem like such a heartbreaker....

And I chose that area for my first 100 (burning river in 3 weeks) particularly because it is not reputed to be challenging in terms of elevation gain/loss: it is a relatively "easy" first 100 and Western States qualifier...the 32miles of the first day of the Western States training runs had more elevation change than all…

It all depends on your perspective.... http://itsallaboutthevertical.wordpress.com/2014/07/12/kilians-world-view-hardrock-100/ If anyone out there can actually post the photo, that would be awesome. I'm technically challenged. As some background, Killian smashed the hardrock 100 course record yesterday (almost 33k of…

If you're looking at the 620, check out the garmin fenix 2. Same price, with plenty of added features. Downside is it's a little big, but it will truly last you though wherever you decide to take your running and cycling...the 620 is great and lightweight but just doesn't have the battery life I needed. The VO2max data is…

Pre-race dinner: sushi and anchor steam. Morning of: pumpkin bread and peanut butter.

Yes! Posted my trail jog and got the comment "awesome jogging!" There you have it....jogging is truly and definitively awesome. Especially when you're heat training in a Bosnian/Jersey velour track suit and listening to "let's get physical" on your Walkman.
-
I wish for so many things...
-
Crap, I meant DougJogging. One more thing: jogging in a track suit in this weather is called "heat training."
-
You need to trademark DaveJogging. Defined as: Dave Running Easy. Screw you guys, I'm going for a trail jog.

I pretty much always say "do it" when people want to try things that might be beyond their comfort zone, but this is definitely an exception. First of all, no chance you'll break 4 hours. But fine, easy enough to say that you'll be out for 6 hours. That wouldn't be enough to decide against the race. Michigan is no…

The first thing that surprises me is that you're doing 26/10 B2B runs; if you can do that, 50k will be a breeze. Did someone mention relentless forward progress? Bryon Powell's book is great; reading through it convinced me that I could do 50mi 10 weeks after my first marathon...maybe not recommended, but certainly doable.…

Oh, and running warehouse has the Stinson (trail and tarmac) on sale, with free 2 day shipping and an additional 10% off with code runblog10. They also have a great return policy of they don't work out.

I wouldn't change shoes for a marathon. How much trail and how much road? The hoka Stinson trail are fine on road, just not as cushy as the tarmac version. Last friday I did 22 and most was on trail but about 4mi was road. I wore the trail shoes. I highly recommend hokas, though, for any distance over 20mi. I wore my…

Depends on how technical the trails are, and more importantly, how muddy. I love my hoka Stinson tarmacs for groomed singletrack, fire roads, and pavement, but they are horrific in mud. Usually I will wear the Stinson trails if it is at all muddy or if the trail is technical, even if I have to cross a bit of pavement. In…

Theres a great article by Pam Smith, who won the western states 100 last year in record heat: http://www.irunfar.com/2013/08/how-the-western-was-won.html. It covers heat training/management (plus everything from nutrition, training volume, and mental outlook.) I'm running 100miles in August in Ohio. It's going to be hot…

I ram an overnight 50 miler last night that had a high rate of attrition- 35 of the 70 did not finish the run. Before awards, the RD made an announcement that there was one guy still out on the course and explained that he was still pushing forward even though he wouldn't have an official finish and would have to know it…

Thanks. That's a great site all around! Tons of great ideas & info!

S Caps have potassium as well, plus buffers to keep the stomach from becoming too acidic. I could be graphic about some of the issues people were having on the trail, but it will suffice to say that I experienced no stomach sloshing with the S Caps, and for that I'm grateful....
-
Another vote for S Caps. Last weekend at the WS training runs it was HOT, and I actually had visible salt deposits on my shirt from sweating. I took an S cap every 45 min or so. I generally stick to 1/hr in heat, but seeing salt on my shirt "inspired" me to take more.

I'm with her^^^. I think you can do it, if you invest in the training time. Make sure that as you are doing your long run training, that you keep to the trails for the long runs, and walk the uphills, relax and coast down hills (don't brace or your quads will be angry, and do an easy jog on the flats. Enjoy the journey.…

5'4", currently 118, 41yo, running 2yr, 7weeks....not that I'm counting! ???? 5 mile (today) 38:34 13.1 1/2013 1:49 (115) 26.2 3/2013 4:04 (114) 50 11/2013 10:25 (117) 75 5/2014 23:30 (121) Looking to drop 10 before my 100 in August. Ten extra pounds over 100miles....no thanks! @Carson I would have guessed that you were…

Up to six I won't typically use anything. 7-14 I will use a handheld (amphipod 12 oz or ultimate direction 20oz) and for more than that (particularly when it gets hot and humid) I use my salomon hydration pack (50oz.) I do unsupported runs up to 50k with the salomon and a 20oz bottle in front. That pretty much covers all…

Forgot to mention this, but for my first trail race I didn't think I would make the cutoff at the end. I was just hoping they didn't stop me on the course, that they would allow me to finish. That was my biggest concern, that I would not be allowed to continue. Thoughts of "will I be last" never entered my mind.
-
Finishing last means you finished ahead of the sweepers. My goal, ever since running trails (for the past year lol) has always been to just finish. One of these days I will concern myself with being "competitive" but for now, finishing is always the main goal. Last weekend I ran a 24 hour timed event. I completed 75…
