  • This is something I've heard from people time and again. "Don't eat after X p.m." Their thought process is (because they told me as much) is that after that time, you are "winding down" and your body doesn't burn as many calories as earlier in the day when you're more active. While, in a very strict sense, that is…
  • I drive a 2007 car and every bump in the road is felt, believe me. It also has a slight vibration...so, if I'm going to drive for any "significant" amount of time (more than 30 minutes), I take my Fitbit off. Years ago, I took a two hour drive and I remember looking at my Fitbit when I got into the car that morning and I…
  • I'm a sucker for dark hair and small hands.
  • The only thing I've tried was like 20 years ago, I stumbled across some hunger suppression pills on Amazon. I had seen things like Dexatrim at the stores and noted how expensive they were. These pills were much cheaper, so I thought I'd give them a shot. I will say they worked pretty well in suppressing hunger but they…
  • C25K is a great program to build your endurance and cardio. Once you are able to run a 5k, you can also download a C210K app and keep going. Another thing I found useful was to download an interval app. Most interval apps should be customizable so that you can set up your workout however you want (intervals of sprinting…
  • Does your backpack have a chest strap? If it doesn't, take a rope and tie it around the shoulder straps across your chest and cinch it tight. That should take some of the stress off your shoulders.
  • There are bandages made specifically for blisters. I've used them and they work well.
  • Eating back 50%-75% is usually encouraged because anything that tells you how many calories you've burned is just an estimate. Some methods (such as going to a clinic and being hooked up to a machine) can be quite accurate. Others, like going off what a treadmill tells you, can be wildly different. Your body is the only…
  • I love mine. I had no idea how invested I would become in tracking steps/exercise until I began tracking steps/exercise. I don't take the calorie burn as gospel but I think it does a reasonable job of keeping track of activity. The only downside, for me, was that I really enjoyed buying watches and always had about two…
  • I've always gone with the formula of one mile moved=100 calories. I don't separate running from walking in that equation. If you weigh 200lbs and move yourself a mile in length, you had to expend roughly the same amount of energy to move 200 lbs a mile whether it was ran or walked. If you run, you work harder but spend…
  • I hadn't read the article before posting the first time, but I read it now. While the symptoms he was experiencing seemed unlikely (given that the number of steps he took before getting bloody ankles and feet was just...well, if he had routinely walked that amount, he should've been conditioned for it), one thing he said…
  • My personal best is 68,500 steps in a day. It was one long hike and when I returned to the trailhead, my feet were sore but other than that, I could have gone for a few more miles. I've always found on long hikes that it hurts more to stop and start again than to just keep going. I'm not a fast walker, so doing 100,000…
  • I used to be intimidated to go to the gym because I'd always see the people that obviously spend way more time in a gym than me there. They were in great shape, worked out hard and just seemed to know what they were doing. Here I was, inexperienced, out of shape and laboring on every exercise. It definitely made me feel…
  • This is where I am trying to get to with running. I've never kept at it long enough to get over the hump, I think. I'm still at that "when is this going to be over" stage whenever I run. I know that there are other exercises I could do, but running is low impact, I can do it just about anywhere (even when traveling), I can…
  • I'm willing to sacrifice a lighter boot for durability and ruggedness, so my go-to choice is Asolo. They tend to run heavier but they are as tough as nails. I also like Merrell but I've found the fit for a Merrell can vary quite a bit. I'm willing to order pretty much any boots online without trying them on first, except…
  • I still play but not much during winter. I'm still out in the winter weather all the time, but at times the game can be quite active and I don't want to take my gloves off constantly. Once it warms up, I start playing regularly again.
  • I tend to wear things that cover the parts that I want covered. I'll wear clothes with huge logos if it's comfortable. It's not about making a statement, it's just what feels good when exercising. If that is something from Gym Shark or Goodwill, comfort is the only thing that matters. If someone is going to judge people…
  • I love Cherry Coke Zero and Cherry Diet Dr. Pepper. I gave the Orange/Vanilla Coke Zero a whirl and it was "ok" but didn't really grab me. I tend to stick to the Coke brands of diet soda as they have that little bit of bite that I like.
  • Did you hear that? My head just exploded. But, it's ok because, you know, I am in a calorie deficit and my brain energy was sucked dry anyway. And the human head weighs about 12 lbs, so guess what? I'm now twelve pounds lighter! Flawless victory!
  • You do realize that every single thing that exists in the universe is made up of chemicals, right? Even if you drink nothing but water, you're drinking chemicals. All to wash down the chemicals you just ate.
  • This was years ago (so no idea if it's still being hawked) but I remember relentless radio ads during late night drives that were trying to sell books about negative calorie foods. When you ate those foods, your body used more calories to digest the food than the food contained. I admit that when I first started hearing…
  • How often are you weighing yourself? If you weigh yourself every day, it's normal to see fluctuations in weight. Water retention can make it seem like you gained 3-5 pounds overnight. A few days later, your body stops retaining water and the numbers you see on the scale will be more accurate to what you really weigh.…

  • I've looked high and low in hundreds of grocery stores and I still cannot find any of this extra yummy/addictive food that was created in a lab. Can someone tell me which store carries this magical stuff? But, maybe you shouldn't, 'cause I probably won't be able to stop myself from just sitting on the floor right there,…
  • I think it depends on what kind of exercising you're doing. My main source of exercise is walking during the week and hiking on the weekends. I stick to my daily deficit and generally don't eat back any exercise calories I've earned. I don't feel hungry that often and my energy levels seem to be good, so this works for me.…
  • Try walking4fun.com. If you use a Fitbit, it can be linked so that you're steps will automatically update your progress along the trail. There are diaries you can read or write in as you walk the trail, photos to view and badges you can earn. I've found it fun and keeps you pushing towards the next milestone.
  • Don't drink my calories. I can't eat it if I don't buy it. I'm done with comic book movies.
  • It looks like a line is forming behind you to get into the bathroom to do a mirror selfie.
  • I've tried the "drink water to help you feel full" trick and it doesn't work for me (usually). But, drinking a diet soda does satisfy me if I'm between meals and am feeling hungry. It doesn't make me feel full but it does take away that little gnawing hunger pain and I can think of something other than food.
  • Well, it's bad math if they think that just by drinking a diet soda, it's going to magically create more of a deficit. The diet soda won't ADD to your daily calories but it won't burn calories, either. However, if they were going to drink a regular soda and decided to drink a diet soda instead, it would free up those…
